WWI HISTORY Speech by President Woodrow Wilson The speech is dedicated to discussion of the objects of the war and the possible basis of a general peace. Wilson claims that the country is going to enter the war because violations of right had occurred which touched us to the quick and made the life of our own people impossible unless they were corrected and the world secure once for all against their recurrence. His program of the worlds peace consists of fourteen points: - Open covenants of peace; - Absolute freedom of navigation upon the seas with an exception as the seas may be closed in whole or in part by international action for the enforcement of international covenants; - Wilson proposes to eliminate all economic barriers and to establish equal trade conditions for all nations; - To reduce national armaments to the lowest point consisting with domestic safety; - An absolutely impartial settlement of all colonial claims; - The evacuation of all Russian territory and such a settlement of all questions affecting Russia as will secure the best and freest cooperation of the other nations of the world; - To guarantee evacuation and restoration of Belgium without any attempt to limit the sovereignty; - French territory should be freed and the invaded portions restored; - The frontiers of Italy should be readjusted; - Nation of Austria-Hungary should be provided with an opportunity of autonomous development; - Rumania, Serbia, and Montenegro should be evacuated and restored; - The Turkish portion of the present Ottoman Empire should be assured a secure sovereignty; - The Polish state should be provided with a secure sovereignty and independence; - And, finally, a general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike. Speech by George W.

Norris George W. Norris is most emphatically and sincerely opposed to taking any step that will force the country into the useless and senseless was now being waged in Europe. However, he adds in his speech that he will not neglect his duty as a senator or a citizen in bringing success and victory to American arms. Norris proposes to consider the terrible consequences of the war they are about to enter. He also notes that the reason for war presented by the President Wilson is that German government has declared certain war zones, within which, by the use of submarines, she sinks, without notice, American ships and destroys American lives. However, he adds that in case of England we werent so strict.

George W. Norris continues that the war will bring no prosperity to the great mass of common and patriotic citizens. It will inevitably increase the cost of living and will bring prosperity only to the stock gamblers on Wall Street. Speech by Robert M.

LaFollette Robert M. LaFollette recognizes that the matter which the President submits for consideration is of the greatest importance. At the same time, LaFollette underlines that the question is one of peace or war, certain to involve the lives and fortunes of many of our people, and, it may be, the destiny of all of them and of the civilized world as well. He says that he received more than 15, 000 letters and telegrams from Americans, and 'in that way, 9 out of 10 are an unqualified endorsement of my course in opposing war with Germany on the issue presented.

Robert M. LaFollette considers the war to be a ruthless war against not only Germany's Army and her Navy but against her civilian population as well. I personally think that it is very difficult to make choice between the justice and injustice, the war as groundless revenge or just response, as it appears to be difficult to balance the two. Who can bear responsibility for the idea that the countries can choose whether they decide to enter the war and ruin the world?

Who can be responsible for the war? Once the war starts, it will inevitably develop in a collapse, and we will lose the idea of why it's being fought in the first place. The decisions and values to which nations cling most stubbornly under inappropriate conditions are those important things that were previously the source of their greatest triumphs over adversity. The nations shouldnt have to be starved to death. The innocent people shouldnt have to die because of somebody's decision. Bibliography: 8 January, 1918: President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points.
