Arguments for War in Iraq (Pros) Military activity of the United States in Iraq, supported by armed forces of the UK and Spain, was initiated in March 2003, after a number of sanctions and political doctrines from the side of President G. W. Bush. In April 2003 united forces took over Baghdad and appointed a civil administrator Paul Bremer to control Iraq, as former ruler of the country Saddam Hussein was in hiding. Military activity has been unfolding all around the territories, accompanied by dreadful acts of violence, taking hostages and frequent suicide bombing attacks, organized by Iraqi opposition, and acts of prisoner abuse from the side of occupants. In December 2003 Hussein was found by American soldiers and arrested.

Since summer 2004 administration of Bush undertakes steps of forming new governmental, legislative and social systems in Iraq. A new interim government was organized and 25 Iraqi appointees became its members, headed by Prime Minister Iraq Allawi. In January 2005 the interim government carried out democratic elections of National Assembly members. The elections were supported by 58 % of potential voters, and now the Assembly starts its activity, despite of continuing hard bombing attacks and numerous deaths of Iraqi people. This is a short outline of the events of military intervention of the US and the Allied forces in Iraq. This war caused a giant wave of resonance all around the world, and many people expressed their opinions, favoring or opposing this military campaign.

In order to from, present and analyze all the pro-war arguments properly, it is important also to pay attention and examine the views of opponents of military operation of the USA in Iraq. There are a number of popular public points of view regarding the negative political and social particularities, which accompany the war, and in this work they will be considered together with the ideas, supporting American policy. First and the most important reason of criticizing military activity in Iraq is devastating effect of the war. Statistic researches estimate that since the beginning of military occupation of Iraq about 20, 000 local residents have been killed, and the majority of those are women, children and innocent civilians. Besides, during the war dozens of troops of armed forces from America and the Allied countries were destroyed, hundreds of soldiers were injured, and many returned home with incurable physical and psychological traumas.

Of course, this argument is very strong, it has undoubted common sense and it is very hard to be opposed. Nevertheless, it is worth to mention that military activity from the side of American government was initiated in reply on numerous terrorist attacks, organized and carried out by Iraqi terrorist groups, and thousands of victims in the United States, which took place after 9 / 11 and series of other devastating attacks. The government of Iraq and especially its former dictator Saddam Hussein had strong connections with different terrorist organizations, like Al Qaeda or Hamas. Saddam used to supply these groups with weapons and invest good money into promoting of suicide bombers activity, in particular, directed against Palestine.

He was linked to a failed attempt of assassination of former American President George Bush in Kuwait. Several times he approved testing chemical and biological weapons on captured foreign prisoners and Iraqi dissidents. Hussein was always very aggressive and antagonistic in his speeches, addresses and declarations; he used to follow destructive policy against citizens of his own country. That is why it is obvious that such a person was a potential threat of using modern terrorist weapons against any country or community in the world.

The other principal argument, which is frequently being presented by Iraqi war opponents, includes ethical, political, cultural and strategic reasons of non involvement of America and the Allied countries into inner affairs of other country. Iraq has own government, own rights for self-administration and self-development, protected by international laws. From all above mentioned points of view, foreign invasion in Iraq falls into deep controversy with the code and principles of international co-existence. But, on the other hand, the dictatorial and oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein established in Iraq was one of the most severe and fierce tyranny in the whole history since the times of Josef Stalin and Adolph Hitler. Hussein became a ruler of the country after murdering his predecessor, and he always preferred physical destroy of any opponents, dissidents or rebels. He used to cut off the tongues of people, who claimed or expressed displeasure with the established regime, besides, he favored to applying the system of severe tortures to any disobedient citizens, which included rapes and giving electric shocks, making children suffer in front of the parents, poisoning and burning bodies with chemicals, etc.

Mostly poor and very religious people of Iraq could not find good opportunity and power to oust this terrible tyranny, though glimpses of opposition used to take place from time to time. That is why the mission of military powers of the United States and the Allied was not devastating the country and taking total control over it, the main idea of this military campaign was bringing principles of equality and democratic ideology to this Arabic state. There was one more reason, proving the necessity of military operation as a measure on calming down Hussein's violent ambitions. This motive is dominance of Muslim religion in Iraq. According to Koran, power and strength are in huge respect for Muslim people, thats why it was exceptionally important for America and the Allied to demonstrate their authority and power by military activity: this is the way, which can be better understood by Muslim community of Iraq.

Some more negative conditions of initiating war in Iraq are said to be unbalancing the situation in the Middle East and, as a result, stimulating the grows of anti-American coalition and strengthening anti-American powers there. Besides, frequently, war opponents say that it would be very problematic to establish the rules of personal freedom and democracy in such country, as Iraq, with its completely different principles of religion and ideology, culture, traditions, standards of living, etc. But, first of all, it is obvious, that it was Saddam Hussein himself, who became the main threat of bringing unbalance and tension to the countries of Middle East region. During his reign he undertook some military attacks on Kuwait and Iran in order to capture important points of oil supply, which resulted in deaths of more than one million people. He became the main aspirator of long and brutal Arab-Israel conflict, which used to be accompanied with occasional military attacks. He used to be obsessed with the idea to organize so called pan-Arab movement, which had to become an opposition to European countries and Israel and initiate military activities around Mediterranean Sea.

That is why, anyway, a huge danger of instability already existed in the Middle East, and American armed forces tried to do their best to eliminate this threat. As to forming anti-U. S. coalition of Arabic nations: it was hardly possible, because the changes and democratic reformations, performed by American administration in Iraq, demonstrated dignity, clear and positive intentions, directed on advancement and encouraging proper development of all social systems of the country.

Besides, it is very important to mark that successful military operation and numerous measures on restructuring and improving life standards of Iraqi people can be taken as a warning sign for other dictators, ruling the countries of the Middle and Far East, like Syria, Iran or South Korea. They have to understand that it is necessary to follow more free and liberal domestic policy and not to make people respond only on enforcement. Besides, observing the present situation of Saddam Hussein, such leaders of Muslim countries must recognize the circumstances and beware of any support and sponsorship of violence and terrorist organizations. This is a very important argument in favor of this war. Opponents of American campaign in Iraq frequently claim that war was not a good choice for delivering positive mission to the other nation: the cost of military operation and taking peoples lives is too high for this.

But, at the same time, there was no other way to influence on domestic tyranny and, the most important, spreading of terrorist activity all around the world. That is the reason, which required fast and rapid involvement from the side of concerned governments, because there was no proper reaction from Hussein on any sanctions and warnings about the initiation of armed attacks. In addition, deceitful and brutal policy of Hussein regarding the availability of his chemical and biological weapons and WMD made the necessity of war much clearer. Iraqi aggressor launched hundreds of threats to use his powerful weapons against European countries and America with the first suitable opportunity.

After suffering some incidents with the letters infected by anthrax, American authorities realized that those words of Hussein are not in vain, and real danger of war with the help of biological weapons had to be eliminated. Some critics of this war used to claim that such huge military campaign required a lot of money and resources. They underlined that it was strictly not good time for war as the USA has been suffering serious economic and national security problems, like financial deficits or increasing unemployment. But occupation of Iraq and ousting of Hussein's regime saved the economy of America and world economy from danger of damping of oil prices, which already took place in 1970 s and 1990 s. Economic losses and consequences of playing with oil prices can be really devastating for many countries and cause significant regression of whole economic environment in the world. There are a number of other convincing reasons, proving the negativism of war in Iraq.

American patriots say that initiating a war was not a proper strategy for such a powerful and influential country like the United States: it made our government look as an aggressor. The others refer to failures in similar attempts of liberalization of Afghanistan in 1980 s, which resulted in increased instability and absence of peace there till recent times. Members of the Democrats are especially disappointed with the decision of President Bush to initiate the war, and they severely criticize this decision. But it is obvious from all above mentioned, that the reasons, which made American and the Allied forces to start military operation in Iraq, are principal and important, first of all, on a world-wide scale.

With his destructive and violent policy of threats and terrorism, Saddam Hussein gave a dare to the whole United Nations organization, which secures global peace and stability. And, sooner or later, an effective power to stop this aggression and terror campaign had to be found, in order to bring this serious international conflict to a positive constructive solution. Military intervention of armed forces of the USA and the Allied countries in Iraqi territories remains one of the most controversial and discussable points of present time. There are a lot of opponents and proponents of it, who continue vivid public discussion with the help of mass media about the benefits, development and possible consequences of this operation.

But the main and unbeatable argument, proving the good effects of this war, is public opinion of Iraqi people, showing that more than a half of citizens admit improvements and positive changes in their lives after liberation. Military campaign in Iraq has significant international importance, and the following quotation from the address of U. S. President George W. Bush, delivered in 2003 at the ceremony of celebration of the 20 th Anniversary of the National Endowment for Democracy, is excellent illustration of it: "This is a massive and difficult undertaking -- it is worth our effort, it is worth our sacrifice, because we know the stakes. The failure of Iraqi democracy would embolden terrorists around the world, increase dangers to the American people, and extinguish the hopes of millions in the region.

Iraqi democracy will succeed -- and that success will send forth the news, from Damascus to Teheran -- that freedom can be the future of every nation. The establishment of a free Iraq at the heart of the Middle East will be a watershed event in the global democratic revolution. " (Conflict Headlines, par. 8). Bibliography: "Conflict Headlines.
