Running head: Jesus and Mohammed Name: University: Lecturer: Date: Jesus and Mohammed Jesus and Mohammed The two personalities, Jesus and Mohammed, are central figures in the two most prominent religions in the world: Christianity and Islam, respectively. Both of them played pivotal roles in the shaping of the respective religions. Actually, most modern aspects of these religions are based on the teachings and lifetime deeds of these two personalities. Existing literature, mainly the Bible in Christianity and the Quran in Islam, serve as records of these personalities, and contain a lot of their lifetimes philosophies.

It is through these two books that Christianity and Islam have continued to thrive to the present day. Yet although Jesus and Mohammed share these common traits, there are some distinctive differences in the way they lived, and the ways that they are nowadays viewed by adherents of their respective religions. The most significant difference between Jesus and Mohammed is the claim to deity. In Islam, Mohammed is considered to have been the last of a long line of prophets who lived and guided the rest of the people on the ways of Allah God as perceived in Islam. Prophet Mohammed is considered to have lived an exceptional life full of virtue.

In fact, the name Mohammed according to Islam means Praise worthy. Hence Prophet Mohammed is held in high esteem in Islam. Nevertheless, he is considered to have been but a human being, all the same. With all his remarkable deeds, he was still human, with no claims to the supernatural (Islam online, 2003). Christianity, on the other hand, consider Jesus Christ to have been not only exceptional during his lifetime on earth, but to have been the earthily embodiment of God himself.

In other words, Jesus Christ was God Himself in Human form. According to the four New Testament books of the bible called the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly alluded to this fact. He claimed to have seen God, the father, and to be the only way, truth and life. He also claimed that there was no other way to reach God except through him (KJV). Several sections of the Gospel call Jesus the only begotten son of God. The name Christ means The anointed one, while Jesus means The Lord delivers.

Christ, according to Christian tradition, is such a special name that no other person has ever been given that name (Sacklunch, N. D. ). Prophet Mohammed started life in an average household in Mecca, in 570 CE. His father died before he was born, and his mother soon afterwards. Thus, from an early age, Mohammed was orphaned and lived with his grandfather. His grandfather also died soon afterwards, and Mohammed came under the care of his uncle.

Life was hard then, and Mohammed faced many hardships as a child. He became involved in his uncles trading business and gained a lot of experience in it. He soon became a reputed merchant in the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. At the age of 25, he married a widow called Khadijah (Geocities, N. D. ). Mohammed's transformation to a messenger of God happened when he was 40 years old.

While meditating in a cave in Mecca, he got a divine visitation from an angel of God. Thereafter, his life took a dramatic turn as he started to proclaim in public about Allahs laws and how to live according to them. He taught a lot about righteousness and the eternal rewards awaiting everybody. He also emphasized on monotheism, as contrasted to the polytheism that was rampart around then. In old age, Mohammed served to unite the different factions of Islam under one doctrine. He died after a prolonged illness and was buried in Medina (Religion facts, N.

D. ). Jesus Christ, on the other hand, lived an exceptional life right from birth. He is claimed to have been born of a virgin woman hence the virgin birth. Very little is recorded of his childhood, except an instance when he was 12 years old when he preached to an audience of old church figures (Christian answers, N. D. ). The ministry of Jesus began properly at 30 years of age, when he was baptized by John the Baptist.

He thereafter lived an extra-ordinary life full of extra-ordinary achievements. For example, he prophesied about the future, healed the sick and even raised the dead (All about Jesus, N. D. ). Through all these manifestations, he showed that he was of a divine origin. Jesus Christ died in a violent way through crucifixion. His death, however, had been prophesied, even by himself, on several occasions.

It hence was but a fulfillment of Gods grand plan. The biblical accounts claim that three days after his death, Jesus Christ rose again from the dead, proving his divinity and power over death itself. He later physically and bodily ascended to heaven, as witnessed by many people around. His most devout adherents, called the disciples, then took the reigns and began spreading Jesus message, called The Gospel, to the rest of the world (Sacklunch, N.

D. ). Hence while Mohammed's death caused a temporary division in Islam, Jesus death actually caused the followers to unite. Today, Jesus is still viewed as a biological, begotten son of God by Christians. Muslims see him as an exceptional prophet of God, but a human, all the same. On the other hand, Christians dont recognize Prophet Mohammed in any of their doctrines. They deny his teachings completely.

Muslims revere Prophet Mohammed as the greatest prophet of all time, while Christians see Jesus as an earthily reincarnation of God himself. References All about Jesus (N.
