Running head: The Manson Family Name: University: Lecturer: Date: Student Number: Charles Manson and The Family Outline of contents Contents Page Abstract 3 Charles Childhood 3 Young adult life 4 The Family 5 The Tate/La Bianca Murders 6 Life sentence 7 Personal Opinion 8 Reference 9 Abstract The story of Charles Manson and the Manson Family reads like some fiction from an action novel. It is the stuff that films are made of. Indeed, at least one book has been written about Charles Manson, and his position in the crime scene if the US is simply legendary. It is an the perfect example of the depths to which human nature can descend whereby conscience becomes an alien concept, and murdering another human becomes as routine as having dinner.

Although permanently removed from the rest of the society when he got imprisoned into a life sentence, there is little that can be done to Charles Manson to compensate for all the atrocities attributed to him. The fact that there is actually a parole pending in his life sentence simply defies the senses: he doesnt deserve anything better than an execution. Charles childhood Charles Manson, also known as Charles Milles Maddox, started life on the wrong side of the tracts. He was born to a 16 year old girl called Kathleen Maddox, in 1935. The events around his birth made it hard for him to identify his biological father with any certainty.

However, Kathleen soon got married to a man called William Manson, from whom Charles got his name. Charles formative years were filled with harrowing days of loneliness and utter loss of direction. On more than one occasion, his young mother tried to give him up either for adoption or to a foster home but to no avail. Finally, in 1947, Charles was placed by the courts in a school for boys. Charles escaped from the school and tried to reunite with his mother, but his mother rejected him (Jennifer, N.

D. ). The break away from the mother might finally have broken Manson's spirit. From then on, at age 13, Charles Manson was involved in numerous juvenile arrests for break-ins and armed robbery. When arrested, he would be taken to court, sentenced to a juvenile institution, but would escape after a while. But while in the prison cells, Charles got sexually harassed and physically brutalized, and this only hardened his spirit.

Within days after his escape, he would be caught once again in association with another crime. People who worked on his cases later were to describe Manson as highly antisocial so much so that he used to live in his own mental world (Ted, 2009). Young adult life In 1952, Manson, now legally an adult, was convicted for sodomizing a boy while threatening the boy with a razor at the throat. This happened in the Washington D. C. National Training school for boys.

Due to the heinousness of the crime, Charles was transferred to the Federal Reformatory in Virginia, where he was categorized as a dangerous individual. This did not deter him from committing more disciplinary offenses and he was soon transferred to the Federal Reformatory of Ohio a more secure institution. In Ohio, his habits suddenly changed for the better. All of a sudden, he was like a role model, with exemplary personal behaviors, and his interest in education intensified such that he moved up from a lower fourth grade level to the upper seventh grade in academics. This combination of factors earned him a parole in 1954 for good behavior (Jennifer, N.

D. ). In the short period following his release from prison in 1954, Manson lived what, in his entire life, approached the state of normalcy most closely. It was during this time that he met and married a hospital waitress called Rosalie Jean Willis. In his attempt to live a normal life, Manson got involved in small-time jobs. But his childhood soon came calling. Manson was soon supplementing some of the family income with money from auto-thefts.

This led to his arrest in Los Angeles in 1955 for taking a stolen car across state lines. After a psychiatric evaluation, he was given five years probation. This probation was however revoked when Manson was found to have failed to appear for a criminal charge in Florida. Manson was arrested, his probation denied, and he was sentenced to three years in prison (Jennifer, N. D. ). While Charles Manson was in prison, wife bore him a son Charles Manson Jr.

Initially, the wife used to visit him in prison, accompanied by Charles mother. But after a while, Rosalie Jean stopped visiting him, and Charles mother informed him that she had gotten involved with another man. What followed thereafter was a series of arrests and releases from correctional facilities and security institutions. Along the way, he got involved with several prostitutes, sometimes posing as their pimps, and getting arrested for the pains. By the time that Charles Manson was 32, he had spent approximately half his life in prison, and had grown used to it. Thus during a 1967 release from Terminal Island, Manson requested to be allowed to stay in prison instead of being released.

The request was not granted (Jennifer, N. D. ). The Family Manson started creating The Family soon after his 1967 release. The exact way in which he acquired the devout followers is not certain, but it is attributed to some of the Scientology philosophy that he had learned while in prison (Robinson, 2008). Initially, he moved in with a graduate librarian called Mary Brunner, in Berkeley. Soon afterwards, he initiated many other followers into his philosophical ideologies, eventually attaining 18 female devotees.

Some of the followers were no doubt pulled in by his radical views, while others were star-glazed young women following his rising image in the San-Francisco's Haight-Ashbury. At one time later in the year, the group set out in a renovated bus across the country side, and it is possible that they recruited even more people into the group during this ride (Jennifer, N. D. ). Charles Manson had an aspiration to be successful in a music career. Thus through an acquaintance, he got introduced to Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. One of Charles Manson's songs was recorded in one of The Beach Boys albums called 20 / 20.

Later frustrations with the music career led Charles Manson to revert back to his crime ways. At one time, he and his followers moved to the Spahn Ranch in the North Western corner of the San Fernando Valley. The Ranch provided a perfect location for the development of the The Family, and Charles Manson gradually turned his followers into his mode of thinking while they were in this Ranch. The overall effect was the formation of the The Family cult (Jennifer, N. D. ). Charles Manson spewed forth philosophies that both entranced and brain washed his followers.

Through his convoluted philosophies and world perceptions, he would manipulate his followers to abide by his will. For example, when The Beatles released the song Helter Skelter, Charles Manson interpreted it to have a hidden meaning that an Armageddon was in the offing whereby all the blacks would wipe out all the white population in 1969. When his prophesy did not materialize, Charles told his followers that they must teach the blacks to put the prophesy into effect (Robinson, 2008). The Tate/La Bianca Murders Charles sent four of his brainwashed followers to a house in Cielo Drive, Los Angeles, with instructions to kill everybody living there. When sending the followers, Charles thought that Terry Melcher, a former musical icon, lived there. Charles Manson had once looked upon Terry Melcher as his path to ascension in the music career.

When Terry didnt come through for Charles, Charles had apparently taken it personally. His response was the 1969 attempted murder on Terry Melcher. Unfortunately, Terry had already moved from the house. Instead, the house was occupied by actress Sharon Tate and film director Roman Polanski. On the day of the attack Roman Polanski was not around. Sharon Tate and four other visiting friends were killed during the attack.

The following night, another couple Leno and Rosemary Labianca were killed in their homes too (Dan, 2009). Investigations for the gruesome, high profile murders took painstakingly long. Police were stumped by the fact that there was no clear motive for the murders. However, in December 1969, they finally arrested Charles Manson and several of his followers. The trial for murders started in mid 1970, and on January, 1971, Manson was found guilty of first degree murder through the joint responsibility rule. On March of the same year, he was sentenced to death (Dan, 2009).

Life sentence In 1972, the California Supreme Court outlawed the death penalty. Charles death sentence was hence converted into a life sentence. The later revision of the Californian law to reinstate the death penalty didnt affect Charles, who was by then serving the life sentence in Corcoran Prison, California. Since then, he has been in and out of courts for parole hearings, which happen roughly once in 7 years. In 2007, Manson was denied parole for the 11 th time. But allegedly, his fame is such that he has received the highest number of mail ever for a prisoner in the US.

His next parole hearing is scheduled to be on 2012 (Ted, 2009). Personal Opinion Personally, I think that Charles Manson is an icon of evil. More, he defines it. A look at his life history shows that right from childhood, Charles was determined to lead a twisted, criminal life. Whenever he got released from the correctional centers, Charles would get involved in further crime almost as soon as possible. Sometimes, his crime sprees would begin on the very same day that he was released.

This is the profile of a severely disturbed man a person who cant ever be expected to fit back in the society. In fact, if he was released back into the rest of the society, it would be like the greatest injustice to humanity. Nobody has the judicial or even moral justification for causing society the kind of grief that The Family caused back in the 1960 s. As long as he lives, Charles represents the apex of depravity- an irreparable mind frame that is safe only behind bars or dead.

The moment Californian rules regarding capital punishment were reinstated, Charles Manson should have been the first person through the gallows. Why this didnt happen is anybody's guess. But so convoluted are the rules and laws that a decision as straight forward as that may take years, or forever, to be put into action. Executing Charles Manson would have served two major roles.

First, it would have rid humanity of an eyesore a phenomenon so tragic that it singularly darkens American history. Secondly, it would have been a mild reprieve for all the innocent people who lost their loved ones under the cursed manipulations of The Family. The sooner that we put the painful memory of Charles Manson and The Family behind us, the sooner we can start building up a society where malcontents are forever removed from the rest of the society.
