Forgetting Sarah Marshal is a romantic comedy that depicts the breakup of Peter Better, played by Jason Segal. Peter is a composer who is dumped by his girlfriend, Sarah Marshall of five years. When talked about romantic comedy, movies like Harry Met Sally and The Wedding Planner comes to mind that caters only to the female audience, meeting the demands and pleasure of the female section. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a movie that has abundance of romance and raunchy jokes in keeping with the demand and satisfaction of both the audiences guys and ladies. Judd Apatow, the writer, producer and director, has created a new genre of comedy, blending the rare combination of sweet and heart-felt with raw and raunchy in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. In Peter, Apatow brings forth his fantasy of a typical male personality.

Peter is a likable loser with the hot TV girlfriend. Despite his vulnerability, Peter is yet a very engaging and attractive character with all his buffooneries. Unlike the conventional hero, Peters character has been portrayed very differently and unconventionally save chauvinism, ego, and control over emotions. When the movie begins, Peter comes to the scene whos expecting his girlfriend. He opens the door wrapped only in a towel to receive his girl.

Sarah drops in to tell him that she will not be able to continue with the relationship they should part ways. This news comes as a bolt to Peter. He does not keep any inhibition to express his emotions. This is aptly shown when he drops his towel, the only piece that covers him. He even refuses to get dressed when requested by Sarah so that they can sit and talk it out. Peter requests Sarah to give him a hug before they part, hoping that this might work.

But it does not work. To overcome his grief, he starts hanging out with any lady he comes across, takes her out for dinner and spends the night with her. His conversation with the ladies ends up in repeated Hi. Neither does he have any reservation to exacerbate his condition. He sobs and sheds tears in front of anyone. In an effort to relieve himself of the memories of the relation, he finally thinks of an outing or vacation to the place of Sarah's choice.

He tells his friend that he remembers Sarah telling Hawaii to be her favorite place and so he plans to check out the place. In what ever decision he takes, Sarah is still prevalent in his life. He cannot get over her. Incidentally, he confronts Sarah with her beau, a British rock star, at the resort hotel in Hawaii. Rachel Jensen, the sympathetic receptionist of the hotel, comes to his rescue to the unpleasant and awkward meeting.

The exotic landscape and the beauties hold no importance to him. He spends his vacation weeping in his suite, sobbing aloud. He gets a call from Rachel checking that everything is fine with him. She informs him that people have complained of unusual sounds from his room.

He ensures that hes fine and probably the sound is coming from the floor above. His excuse is nullified as he is putting up on the topmost floor. In his pain, we are in splits. Peter exposes and bares all the emotions synonymous with female characteristics love, anger, jealousy, sulking, tears, over emotional.

From a lousy who likes to lie around his apartment all day wearing sweatpants and munching on large bowls of cereal to writing a rock opera featuring Dracula and puppets, the character of Peter transforms and evolves pleasantly. He takes the heroic stunt once in the movie when he removes the topless picture from the wall of the male washroom (when Rachel is already impressed with Peter) and is bashed badly in return. In Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Peters mission to forget Sarah is accomplished. The movie is out and out a success in deploying the condition of present single male society where love is hard to get.
