E-Business E-Business is the business which involves electronic technology, particularly the computer. The major activity of the business includes e-mail the abbreviated form of electronic-mail used for creating, transmitting and storing text-based messages. Nowadays the usage electronic technology by individuals and companies has become a wide-spread phenomenon the world over. The electronic technology has entered into the sphere of almost all business activities because it makes the functioning very much easy and convenient. Today every active business person is seen carrying a laptop instead of a briefcase that he / she used to carry nearly a decade ago. We see many business persons carrying laptops while commuting in cars or other modes of local transportation like local buses, railway trains or aero-planes as if the laptops are an extension of their bodies.

Let alone the business persons, even those not directly involved in business but are in other professions such as science, research, artwork and writing carry the ubiquitous small black cases. While most of the old persons (say, parents and grandparents), particularly in the developed countries, get stuck with them, the younger people (children and teenagers) either have their own laptops or used their parents laptops mostly to play computer games. In the developing countries, the scenario is a little different. Most of the population comprises middle-class and lower-middle-class families for whom a laptop is a luxury of the fluent families. For the purpose of communication with others, either locally or internationally, they go to cybercafes.

The cities and big towns of the developing countries therefore have many cybercafes. About two decades ago in such countries, communicating (like telephoning) with persons in other countries was not only very difficult but also costly. Then one had to go to a post office which had international communication facilities, and wait for many hours to get the contact (going through various channels) connected, and then pay a big amount depending upon the time (mostly minutes) of the communication. In those days, telegraph (which is now almost extinct) was the most popular mode of communication in the case of an emergency.

And this mode was also costly because the 1 amount charged depended on the words sent. Thus for the people living in most of the developing and some underdeveloped countries, the electronic mode of communication has come as a boon. The e-business has proliferated on a much larger scale in not only the developed countries but also in the developing countries, the remarkable examples are China and India. The reason is obviously the profitability of this business. The businesses of television channels (news, entertainment and infotainment) as well as e-mail networks on the PC (personal computer) mostly depend upon advertisements for their revenue. For the users, those watching televisions, advertisements are rude interruptions.

Most of them use their remote controls to switch over to the other channels, but the advertisers are least concerned and keep on increasing with the passage of time. For the users of e-mail on PCs, the advertisements appearing mostly on the opening pages of the new sights are not so irksome or irritating. Because most of them simply ignore the advertisements and keep on doing what they want to do. This has given rise to the emergence of some sights (which, I may call dubious). Since the rates of advertisements on various sights depend upon the hits of the users, these sights offers the e-mail readers some money not only to read them but also simply to hit them without reading. Whats more, such sights have some surveys running into several pages which, if the users fill them up, they get more money.

In Mumbai (India), where I live, it is not uncommon to see many students and retired men and women (mostly homemakers) spending hours in cybercafes going through such sights and earning handsome amounts every month. For them it has become a regular home-based job. However, as with almost everything in our lives, there is another side to the coin. Against many of its advantages, e-mail also has a few disadvantages.

The most irritating are the scams, the uninvited messages. And then there is also the problems of virus. The virus enters the system, if one is not careful while downloading programs from some sights. Many computer-users use anti-virus programs to eliminate the virus from their systems. Once, while working on a computer, an electronic expert told me that, like our physical 2 bodies, we must also take care of the computer bodies.

Whenever, the virus attacks our physical bodies, we take appropriate medicines to increase our immunity and eliminate the virus. It is similar with the computers. The trouble is one never knows from where and when the virus will attack the computers. According to the latest report, a computer worm known as Conficker was likely to evolve into a virus on the April Fools Day (April 1, 2009), becoming harder to exterminate but expected to wreak havoc. I task force assembled by Microsoft, it was learnt, has been working to stamp out the worm.

Initially, we thought, it was somebody's idea of an advance April Fool joke! Nowadays the most profitable e-business includes electronic software and hardware modifications. Most of the students in the developing countries, are therefore opting for the study of software or hardware. Tomorrow there is no business like e-business they believe. Perhaps rightly.

If we look around at how the electronic technology has changed our everyday lives, it really appears not only like the now technology but also the future technology. One wonders, how it is going to affect us in the future. The following perturbing questions arise in mind: (a) Are we going to become totally dependent upon electronic technology? (b) How is it going to affect us emotionally? and (c) Will we become insensitive to human emotions and ultimately ignore what we know as human values? It therefore appears that there is nothing which can stop the juggernaut of electronic businesses. But, like any other field of technologies, the electronic technology will have to face many challenges. 3
