My writing process Thesis Writing takes a certain amount of preparation, much of it nothing to do with the writing, in some cases it builds upon a whole lifetime of experience. Possibly because writing is something I dont find pleasurable I put off actually writing as long as possible. My first step, after coming downstairs, is to switch the computer otis gives the machine time to get through all that guff it has to do before actually getting going while I make a hot drink. My computer works much better in a steamy atmosphere and so do I.
I also do things such as tidy up, get food out of the freezer for later, do a little food preparation as needed and generally put off what Im supposed to be doing. Usually I write in complete isolation so I can cut myself off and get on with it especially when there is a dead line approaching. Mainly though I prefer to be well ahead of my target as I dont perform well under stress. The radio or television is on at low volume. I check e-mails, deal with any business and generally clear up. It is only at this point that I check what Ive got to get written.
Do I have the right texts? Looking for these can put the actual writing off for a while. If there is more than one piece I prioritize, usually by date, but it could be putting the worst piece last. Now I start to put together ideas brainstorming gets me past that blank page stage and then putting the ideas I have generated into some order.
I do the body of the paper first, then struggle with a thesis sentence and finally draw a conclusion. Because I use a word processor I dont have to make loads of notes first, but as long as Ive got plenty of evidence in front of me, I can move it around, adding here and deleting there. It might make more sense to come up with the thesis first and then work towards it, but this doesnt seem to work very well in my case, especially if it is a subject Im not that confident with. As I research I might come up with some evidence that means I have to alter a thesis, so why not write it later? At this point the paper looks finished - but then I have to get everyone to read it not just one or two people, but as many as possible. They must think Im a nuisance, especially when I ask them to read the same piece several times.
Theyve got their own lives to live, their own papers to finish. I want them to suggest ways I can improve -alter a sentence here, add an idea there, expand on a point, eliminate duplication, correct a spelling or syntax error. This is a long process. If I were writing with pen a paper I would not be able to make changes so easily there would be lots of crossing out, insertions, writing in margins starred passages before I came up with a final draft - and that is only the first final one the one I show to friends before altering it once again. Basically I am a perfectionist, but at the same time unsure of my writing abilities.
This is not a good combination, as it makes things very complicated and time consuming. I seem to think everyone else knows more about my writing than I do why should they? some of them arent even studying the same subjects as me. It doesnt even matter if I get good grades and great comments, although that is always nice. I still think that in some way I could have done better and so I dont know when to leave well alone. If I re-read one of my pieces after my long winded method, it might be slightly improved, but in that time I could have read a book, baked a cake, gone for a jog written a book even with some of the longer pieces.
Conclusion My problems with my writing arent necessarily related to the quality of my writing, but more with my fear of producing less than the best. My standards are very high and this means I take a lot of care, but also that I take much more time than I might have done. Word count 744
