Crank (2006) Poison in his veins. Vengeance in his heart. This is Crank, one of the most interesting films I ever saw. Crank is produced by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, with Jason Statham starring as Chev Chelios.
Emotions. Adrenalin. Feelings. Speed. These are, probably, the first things coming to ones mind while watching the film.
And the second thing. And the third, the fourth, and the fifth. Probably, the only one thing. The subject at issue is that Crank is remarkable for the unique feature - surprisingly, but it manages to completely, totally restructure your mind in a way that you will never manage to think about something else.
Only about the film. It seems, that merely all producers, who are trying to create an action film want to achieve the same results. However, only few of them really succeed in doing so, so successfully like in the film produced by two amateur directors - Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. As far as I remember, almost the same impression was achieved in the Jan de Bonts film, in his directorial debut with Speed in 1994. Neveldine and Taylor use almost the same idea, however, instead of the bus with broken brakes there is a man, Chev Chelios. He runs, runs, runs, and he cannot stop.
Jason Statham starring as Chev Chelios is being injected a dose of poisonous substance. He knows he will die soon. In fact, merely the same idea was used in classic noir movie Dead On Arrival, however, in case the main character in this movie had at least one day at his disposal, the directors of Crank offer a more shortened version - one hour. No more time. The only way to prolong Chev Chelios life is to run. This is because of adrenalin, which slows down the mortal effect of the poison.
It means that if Chev Chelios still wants to find out what is going on, and to get rid of his killers, he badly needs to be on the edge. So, what should the main character do in order to avoid death? The directors fantasy exceeded all possible expectations. Everything is used here street racing, cocaine, loud rock-music, white hot wafer-iron Every time when Chev Chelios moves, you unwillingly feel paralyzed with terror what will he do next? Human brain and human psychics is quite flexible system. Our mind perceives and accepts not only classical works of arts but also watches with interest the things evoking unusual, unbiased and spontaneous emotions.
No wonder that cinema, being a part of mass culture, during the last decades is more inclined not to the development of aesthetic potential of the cinematographic art, but rather to the industry of entertainment. The adrenaline splash you get while watching horror films, actions, thrillers and box-office hits is something you " ll never be fed up with. Jason Statham's part is very impressive. He plays his usual role - the life of a tough guy who is a law unto himself. I should say, the role is not so simple like it might seem, and Statham's face is often encircled with wrinkles and emotions.
However, he is a talented actor who managed to express the best of his talent. You will not find any expensive equipment or extremely expensive special effects. The lack of computer graphics and cinematographic equipment Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor managed to compensate by absolutely mad tricks and scenes. The vast majority of dangerous episodes at helicopter, during the race and others were done live, and camera operators (the directors) also performed dangerous tricks to produce an impressive film episode. Indeed, there isnt very much obscene scenes and nudity in the film, instead, there is an overwhelming quantity of action for everybody to enjoy, and this action is handled by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor and the main character perfect. Crank is a movie of extremes.
Chev Chelios runs an endless race from the one extreme to the other and is consistently trying to keep his heart rate high so the synthetic poison in his body doesnt kill him. From running, jumping, combating, hitting, shouting, crying, feeling pain, Chev Chelios goes to the next and the next to next extreme to assure he is still alive. Crank is not a movie for those, who appreciate the simpler virtues of logic, narrative credibility and characterization. This is an action with crazy zooms, extreme close-ups and frantic tracking shots.
From the first seconds to the very end Crank is some sort of energy drink. Crank is really very special film. It is like a palindrome. It shows the audience what occurs to the man who needs to keep adrenaline at a very high level. One can say that Crank is a sort of paraphrase of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, however, Crank is much more sincere and humane. The man remains the main character, instead of racing cars or guns.
Crank can be easily compared with the latest thrillers and, probably, is much better with its remarkable races and drive. When I watched the film, I came to conclusion that Crank is obviously one of the most interesting films I ever saw. With the last minutes of the film you feel the pain and fatigue - both in the main character and yourself. Its not a joke the viewer has to run, escaping from death for almost two hours just to feel he has the heart full of adrenalin.
