SAVING PRIVATE RYAN Democratic processes and laws will be made and modified so they are considered fair and just by the majority of society. Yet, in war, all these laws can be broken, and all hell breaks loose. War is conducted in the most gruesome and extreme methods by countries in order to supposedly help other countries. Yet in a way, we are not privy to the real motives of why countries go to war or support war activities. There is no fairness in war.

It is a threat to humanity's existence because of the availability of weapons of mass destructions and other high-end weapons that are available today. Only terrorism and injustices happen in times of war. Many innocent people suffer because of thirst for war. If these restrictions keep defying civil liberties, there will come to be civil wars as well as world wars. The innocent are punished along with the guilty.

And all is rooted in one reason: it is wartime and the principles of constitutional liberty are thrown away. The movie Saving Private Ryan is a story of Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and his men who arrive at Omaha Beach, in order to save a man. Many soldiers who are on rescue die as soon as the landing ramps are lowered. The film can be disturbing after one sees it because of the vivid scenes that depict the violence. It is the survival of the Private Ryan that is the goal and the scenes are portrayed so well and acted out excellently by Tom Hanks that one gets the feeling that he can be cut down anytime. Viewers commiserate with the soldiers who just die one after another in the fierce battle directed by Spielberg.

The acting is laudable even from the start because Tom Hanks leads the troops and is heroic as can be, shooting the tank even as he knows that it can run over him straight ahead. It is bravery at its best and all the actors are able to act their parts well. Direction by Spielberg is at its best here because the camera follows the soldiers and the audience gets the feeling that he is also part of the scene and this creates a feeling that it is almost happening right with him. The director does not care whether the scene will be expensive or will need several props that may be hard to find. He just delivers well with viewers almost tasting and smelling all the gunpowder all around.

Again, Spielberg is at his best here, with an almost passionate eagerness to show the reality of what happens in war. It is one of the most horrendous and disturbing film about war because it shows how war really is like. The way the scenes are shot makes one think that the director made sure that the readers will feel like they are actually there. The use of the small mirror in order to see what was going on at enemy lines was very effective because it made viewers want to coach Tom Hanks that he should not be displaying his arm for all to see because it can be shot anytime.

Editing is crisp and adds to the smooth flow of the story. The scenes are just right in its length, never too long as to be boring, or too short as to want for more. The editors also made sure to include the gory parts where the comrade put back all the tissues in the knee yelling at the injured soldier not to look at all. But that scene sticks in ones mind long after one had viewed the film.

This is also true with the man who removes his helmet, surprised that the stray bullet just breezed through him, only to be shot straight at his forehead because he was exposed to the bullets whizzing around him. Such editing makes the film exciting to watch even if one just hears shooting from beginning to end. The cinematography and effects are also critical to the success of the movie. The effects are very realistic and the cinematography is tastefully and effectively executed. These effects lend to the success of the film in terms of tug at the heart. In recommending ways to make it better, one can almost not think of anything that could add impact on the scenes.

It is just the overall feeling of war that one cannot ju 9 st accept. Slowly the world is devising ethical standards for revolutionary conflicts. In order for war to become obsolete, there is a need for an inner change of heart in human beings. There must necessarily be kindness and compassion on the part of leaders of different countries. When all parties gain knowledge of the nuances and implications of the issue, only then can the issue on a real ethical standard and fairness in war can be settled. Despite guarantees provided by the Constitution that each individual freedom is protected in war, the ordinary citizen, knows better.

They know that the government must give all societal players with an equal and viable opportunity to articulate their concerns about going into war and the value of their inputs should not be predicated on their economic power. This approach minimizes the effects of the paradox of democracy. It is imperative that political institutions are consistent in striking a balance between the interest of various stakeholders in the political process and the balance that can be achieved by implementing the provisions of established rules. Indeed, fairness is dictated by the principle of justice. Individuals are always to be treated equally. It seems, looking at the overall picture, it is a long way to go before war becomes obsolete.
