Earth in the Balance versus Walking The objective of Al Gores book Earth in the Balance is basically to warn and inform the nation about the threats and consequences of global warming. According to Al Gore, a prime solution to the prevention of global warming is to adopt a new and long-range outlook and take responsibility for facing the problem up-front. He emphasizes the need to start acting now on the basis of what we know. Furthermore, he stressed out that procrastination will only result to the acceleration and worsening of the condition at hand. Walking is a nature essay written to make a plea for total and complete freedom within ourselves because according to Davis Thoreau, man is an inhabitant and part and parcel of Nature rather than a member of society. " By his assertion, Thoreau may imply that man has greater responsibility to nature than just occupying it. He suggests that the peak of this so-called freedom is Walking off the beaten path.

He feels that a real walker is eager and keen to get lost in the woods. Society in his context is the formation of two or more walkers developing and connecting to form one circle. The society that is now created will then exists with a single purpose. This purpose is now the preservation of the world. Both articles, essentially, were written with an objective to urge the public to preserve and protect our environment. Thoreau wrote that in Wildness is the preservation of the world.

Wildness may be an outlook of life for Thoreau maybe a place that is peaceful and free from the restraints and chains of what society brings. It is this Wildness that makes us enjoy leisurely walks and become in touch with nature. It may also be the very thing that compels us to preserve the natural gift given to us. Al Gores method of convincing us to preserve our habitat is different from Thoreau. While Thoreau uses the art of language and words to induce us, Gore uses alarming scientific evidences and information to convince us. In his book, Gore calls upon the public to work together and take the proper steps to prevent global warming.

This public which Gore calls upon is the society that Thoreau described as two or more walkers sauntering with one common purpose. Furthermore, Al Gore in his book warned the public that unless we act quickly in stopping global warming, our world will encounter more and more calamities and disasters. According to Gore, one major calamity that might further disturb our environment is that the North Polar ice cap and all the mountain glaciers in the world will finally melt down in a few decades from now. This is what Thoreau meant by wildness. According to him, it is this wildness that will preserve the natural world. We should intensify our need of being wild in order to motivate ourselves to be more concerned and active in terms of preserving our world.

We need to further instil wildness within ourselves and make it a lifestyle to treasure and safeguard our planet. Wildness, in this context, may not only mean the concern and movement towards the conservation of nature, but being more active in acting and deciding on the things that we already understand and the environmental issues that bothers us. This is exactly what Gore intended to imply when he said, The insistence on complete certainty about the full details of global warming the most serious threat that we have ever faces actually an effort to avoid facing the awful, uncomfortable truth: that we must act boldly, decisively, comprehensively, even before we know every last detail about the crisis. Those who continue to argue that the appropriate response is merely additional research are simply seeking to camouflage timidly or to protect their vested interest in the status quo.
