The Bead Bar Systems Development Plan Summary The present paper is aimed to present a systems development plan for the Bead Bar, using the seven standard systems development life cycle phases as the primary sections. The systems development plan is created in accordance with the Bead Bars company goals, namely, to a computer bus network that will enhance companys operations. The steps and tasks required in each phase of the project are outlines, and the guidelines for a system review and maintenance schedule are created. The Bead Bar was founded in 1998 by Meredith S. and offers its customers wire, beads, and strings, required to create their own bead jewelry.
The Bead Bar has three divisions: 5 franchises, 6 studios, and Bead Bar on Board. In order to enhance the companys efficiency, the company needs to restructure its current network system, namely to remove the paper-based forms and systems, to reduce the quantity of lost orders, fulfillment delays, and incorrect invoicing. The company, therefore, needs to develop a computer bus network that will enhance franchise record keeping and marketing, studio operations, tracking sales leads, tracking inventory, sharing information between the companys employees and customers through IP phone, teleconference, and e-mail. Systems Development Plan Basically, system development plan is a problem solving process that will allow the Bead Bar to investigate a situation, to design a system solution to improve the situation, to acquire technological and financial resources to implement a solution, and to evaluate the success of the problem. The Bead Bar system development plan will comprise of seven steps (or phases) the system is planned to pass through between the time it is created and the time it is phased out.
The following graph illustrates the major standard systems development life cycle phases: Graph 1 Seven Standard Systems Development Life Cycle Phases Phase 1 Investigation The project is planned to be initiated on March 1, 2008, two weeks after it is approved by the Bead Bar executives. During the investigation phase it is planned to study the existing subject at issue (namely, the inefficient companys network system, and the possibility to develop a computer bus network) and then to define whether it will be feasible to develop a new computer bus network or to redesign the existing system. The duration of the investigation phase is February 15 February 29, 2008. Recommended steps: To define the type of computer network to be implemented (taking into consideration the companys goals); To develop a project scope document, where the system requirements will be defined and enlisted; To create the detailed project plan, including all required tasks, responsibilities, etc. ; To manage and monitor the project plan.
Phase 2 Analysis The duration of the analysis phase is March 1 March 15, 2008. To determine which system design, being based on the Bead Bars systems engineering and technology analysis, will meet the companys requirements; To collect all required documents, to interview users of the current computer system in the Bead Bar, to observe the existing system in action, and to collect and analyze data in order to understand current computer system functioning and to identify new requirements; To develop a requirements definition plan that will be then approved and signed by the knowledge workers; Phase 3 Design The duration of the design phase is March 15 April 30, 2008. To develop a technical architecture of computer networks and to select the most appropriate type of the computer network to be then implemented. The selection should be based on the following: Low cost, easy to install and easy to use computer network; Able to provide the remote access to corporate network; Able to connect all required locations to make the exchange of data easier; To develop a systems model and to design it from graphical user interface (GUI), screen design, and databases; To fulfill a graphical placement of the objects on the plan in order to describe how exactly the system (namely, the bus computer network) requirements that were identified in the analysis phase, will be met; The recommendations are to consider the possibility of implementation of a bus network, a web-server, and an open-source database, as the most appropriate and most efficient solutions for the Bead Bar company. Phase 4 Development The duration of the development phase is May 1 May 30, 2008. The development phase involves the process of turning the design specification of the bus computer network in the Bead Bar into a real working system.

Network Programminsystem/Unit TestinDocumentatioTraininPhase 5 Implementation Implementation phase starts when the bus computer network is developed, tested by IT professionals, and starts being used in the actual working environment in the Bead Bar company. The implementation phase requires: To create a user guide; To provide the Bead Bar employees with the appropriate training in order to get them familiar with the new computer system, to facilitate their understanding of the computer bus network functioning, and to enhance their efficiency. Phase 6 Maintenance The maintenance phase includes consistent monitoring, evaluating, repairing (if necessary), and improving the new computer bus system network throughout the entire lifetime of the system in the Bead Bar. The maintenance phase also implies consistent monitoring and maintaining of the bus computer network integrity.
This will be done through establishing better security measures required to protect the Bead Bar system from virus threats. The present network, under the systems development plan, will be kept up-to-date with the changes in the company. Overall, the maintenance phase is supposed to be a dedicated effort to keep the Bead Bar computer bus network at the optimum level through conducting necessary maintenance as well as enhancements as it will be defined by periodic review. Phase 7 Retirement The retirement phase will start if the life of the system ongoing maintenance is not enough. References Bus network. (n. d. ).
