Religion in Europe (1) In 1100 A. D. , Christianity in Europe was at its strongest. The power of Catholic Church was so great that it was impossible for any European monarch to be coroneted, unless coronation was being blessed by Pope. In 1095, Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade, to liberate Jerusalem from infidels. The true purpose of Crusade was to get rid of as many representatives of European nobility as possible, because they growing increasingly critical of Church's financial dealings. The holy fathers were enjoying a steady flow of financial donations, simply because people were encouraged to think that clergy represents Gods authority on Earth.
Such Church's practices as sales of indulgences, robbing peasants of their land, promotion of religious prejudices and building barriers on the way of scientific progress, were practically unopposed. This is the reason why the time when Christianity was enjoying an unprecedented political influence in Europe, is now being referred to as Dark Ages. (2) By 1700, Christianity had completely lost its religious credibility in the eyes of European intellectuals. The numerous breakthroughs in the field of empirical sciences, has shown that this obscure religion of sadomasochists simply does not posses an ultimate truth. Ever since Bible was being translated into German by Martin Luther, more and more people were beginning to realize that there was no need to have an intermediate link between them and the God, in form of greedy clergy.
Galileo and Copernicus had proven that it is Earth that revolves around the Sun and not the other way around, as Bible insists. Ever since the beginning of 18 th century, Church began to resort to science, in order to prove the validity of Christianity, even though that during the time of Dark Ages, it used to refer to scientific knowledge as such that comes from Devil. The Industrial Revolution drove the last nail into Christianity's coffin and turned it into the set of meaningless rituals, which coincided with scientific and cultural progress starting to gain a momentum.
