Analyzing Novels Ernest Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bells Toll is considered as one of his best works, because author was able to give readers an insight on the essence of war from very unusual perspective. If author lived today, he would have been in jail, since being a mercenary is now considered as the criminal offence. In For Whom the Bells Toll, Hemingway actually promotes the idea that being a warrior is mans natural calling, although it involves certain unpleasantness, such as killing people. Novels structure is meant to correspond to its main idea, this is why such literary methods as exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution are easily identifiable in it.
At the beginning of novel, we get to meet its main character Robert Jordan. Author introduces us to the settings, where action is going to take place, which allows us to have a better understanding of the essence of Spanish civil war. By describing nature and peoples way of life in Spain, author expose readers to his own first-hand experiences, this makes storyline even more realistic. As novels plot unravels, we get to learn about psychological motives that define characters act.
At the same time, the storyline is becoming more dynamic, when events follow each other with ever-increasing speed. We can refer to this as raising action. While being in the midst of Spanish guerrillas, Jordan begins to slowly adapt to their life philosophy, which encourages him to begin living one day at the time and to give in to his sexual urges. Other novels characters, such as Pablo, Anselmo and Karkov, also act in the way that is meant to bring about an ultimate resolution of storys psychological tension, which in literature is usually referred to as climax. From the very beginning of Hemingway's book, Jordan is being described as very committed to his task of blowing up a bridge. Therefore, it is only natural that novels climax coincides with partisans committing an act of sabotage and ensuing skirmish with falangists.
One of the most memorable moments about Hemingway's novel is that climax in it lasts much longer than readers would originally anticipate. Author spends a great deal of time describing characters state of mind, under the extreme circumstances of an armed combat. It is a known fact that, the most dramatic moments of persons life seem to last much longer. We get to experience the same effect when we read about Jordan and his friends finally deciding in favor of taking action, despite impossible odds.
Blowing up bridge, is without doubt, the most culminating moment in Hemingway's novel. After Jordan breaks up his leg, the pace of storyline considerably slows down. Readers understand that there are going to be no more dramatic events mentioned in the novel, before it ends, because Jordan is going to be killed, while being immobilized. Slowly but surely, books tensions begin to fade. Even though Jordan is still resolved to stand his ground to the very end, he is no longer preoccupied with Earthly matters. This part of the novel can be referred to as falling action.
We cannot talk about Hemingway's story being resolved in classical manner, when the end of personal conflict comes as the result of some larger issues ceasing to represent any importance. In For Whom the Bells Toll, it is other way around the death of main character comes as a logical result of his existential mode. However, civil war in Spain does not end with his death. Readers assume that Jordan is going to die, because he is wounded and badly outnumbered. However, his death only resolves his own anxieties, which is very symbolical, because Hemingway subconsciously portrays Republican cause as deriving out of peoples passion rather then out of their rationale. Thus, we can say that it is up to readers to consider novels ending as such that corresponds to the classical literary scheme or not.
