... much from life as possible is absolutely justified, because we only live once. Thus, we can think of consumer culture as descendant of Renaissance values, which were materialist in their essence. People have always existed as consumers, throughout the history; therefore, being a part of consumer culture is absolutely natural to them. Consumer culture provides people with a choice, when it comes to selecting products.

In Communist countries, consumerism has always been referred to as something that degrades people spiritually. At the same time, people in Soviet Union, for example, had to spend hours in line-ups, in order to buy the most basic things. Many KGB officers would gladly provide Western intelligence services with Soviet state secrets in exchange for brand name electronics or even denim jeans. The critics of consumerism can argue long and hard about its harmful effects, but they will never be able to deny the fact that consumerism is the integral part of economic' activity. It boosts competition among manufacturers of the same product. In its turn, this results in lowering of prices, which is beneficial for the people.

Citizens would not be able to buy everything that is necessary for their well-being in the nearest grocery store, if it was not up to the consumerism. The fact that commercial institutions need to strive to expand the range of its operations, in order to remain competitive, provides many people with new employment opportunities. Even as recent back as 50 years ago, there were no such professions as public relation manager, marketing specialist or advertisement psychologist in existence. Yet, today, they are considered prestigious jobs. We can say that consumerism allows money to be made out of thin air.

People might have different opinions about whether such practice is morally justified or not, but the fact is a whole categories of citizens, which not be able to succeed in life, because of lack of physical strength or intellectual powers, on their part, are now able to enjoy comfortable living, thanks to the fact that they are the part of consumerist society. The environmentalists suggest that the promotion of consumerist values negatively affects the environment. This might very well be the case, but who cares? We might talk a lot about such things as protection environment, helping needy children of Somalia or saving whales, but the truth is acting in selfish manner is actually natural for the majority of people. It is well known that some of the most ardent critics of consumerism are left-wing Liberals. This, however, does not prevent them from buying houses and luxury cars with the mean of credit cards.

It is very ironic that Starbucks coffee shops became Liberals most favorite hang out joints. They like to discuss injustices of the world in these shops, while sipping organic coffee, which was being brought from Colombia, where workers are paid few dollars a day for growing it. In fact, Starbucks became one of the symbols of consumerism; however, this does not prevent tree huggers from coming there. This once again proves them as hypocrites. What is very remarkable is that promoters of anti-consumerist agenda often argue that consumer culture in America encourages the exploitation of people in poor countries. These people support such claims, for as long as they stay in their godforsaken countries.

Nevertheless, once they immigrate to America, their attitude radically changes. The first thing they do, after receiving a welfare check, is heading out to Wal-Mart. In his article Why Wal-Mart is Good for America (and Maybe Your Portfolio), Joshua Kennon links Wal-Mart to the rise of consumer culture in this country and suggests that this is actually beneficiary to all: On the other hand, it must be recognized that very few of us have the blessing of occupying the top quintile of wealth. When Wal-Mart can offer her glue at $ 0. 20 per bottle, or notebooks at $ 0. 10 each for back to school, there is something good going on for society. If a factory in Mexico can produce it for cheaper, I would argue the company has a moral obligation to its customers - which typically are the poorest demographic in the United States - to buy from it (Kennon, 2007). Wal-Mart represents the values of American consumerism and despite the criticism, directed at it; it provides competitive prices to underprivileged people in U.

S. How can it be bad? By doing this, Wal-Mart also reduces the gap between poor and rich in America. Of course, this is being done at the expense of exploiting people in Third World countries, but again who cares?

As we have mentioned before, citizens in Pakistan or Shri-Lanka have the same psychological motivations with us and the exploitation of Americans would not represent a moral dilemma for them, if they were put in such position. It is better to have them working for 5 dollars a day then if we had to do this. The most appealing about consumer culture is that it is absolutely deprived of moral prejudices, which are based on outdated religious dogma. It actually defines individual for what it really is just a digestive organ. As Tyler Durden says in Fight Club: Listen up, maggots.

You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You " re the same decaying organic matter as everything else (IMDb, 1999). We might not like it, but the fact is our own comfort means much more to us then anything else in the world, and those who suggest otherwise are simply not being entirely honest with themselves. This is the reason why, despite the fact that consumer culture often repulses us emotionally, we simply cannot imagine America without being affected by it. It is a truth that, if allowed to pursue its present course, consumerist culture will change the essence of this country to something different from what it originally used to be.

However, by the time it happens, we will not even be here. We cannot refer to consumerism as the root of all evils, as Liberals do, because it is just an indication that something is wrong with society. The real reason why American society is becoming secularized and obsessed with consumption is that it celebrates diversity little too hard. The same processes were being observed in Roman Empire, just before it was being sacked by barbarians. But it would not be entirely honest to suggest that ancient Romans were not having a good time, before their country collapsed. Just as in America nowadays, the instant gratification was the principle that majority of Roman citizens lived by.

There is no much difference between average American, who after visiting a shopping mall, comes home to watch a football game and ancient Roman citizen, who after being given free bread and vine, would go to watch gladiators killing each other at Coliseum. It is an undeniable fact that the spirit of consumerism undermines society's integrity, but since there is nothing can be done about it, we might as well enjoy being able to buy bananas and pineapples in the middle of winter at Wal-Mart, while it lasts. The consumer culture allows us to become ultimate hedonists and this is not that bad at all. There are many people in our country, for which satisfying their buying needs constitutes an absolute priority and it would be a very arrogant to describe them as being the puppets of their anomalistic urges. (4) It is very hard to talk about consumer culture without taking sides. This is one of the topics, which instantly sparks controversies, when becoming the subject of discussion. Nowadays, people are required to remain politically correct, while expressing their views on the variety of topics.

This often leads to their opinions being deprived of any value, because they can be interpreted in many different ways. The issue of consumerism concerns us all and some of its aspects are just too pressing, in order for the people to remain neutral, when it comes to discussing them. Regardless of what opinion people might have about consumerism, it is going to lack depth for as long as they live in America. This is because they are all affected by it to certain degree. We are dependent on possessing things about which many people, who live in poor countries, have not even heard about.

Consumerism is beneficial, when it comes to increasing citizens life span and addressing their physical needs. However, it undermines nations unity. During the hurricane Katrina, the majority of people in the affected areas were preoccupied with looting. Some of them would rather drown then let go boxes with Mp 3 players they stole from the stores, for example. Every electrical blackout in large American cities results in stores being broken in with the purpose of theft, on the part of people who otherwise are considered law-abiding citizens.

This is the direct consequence of consumer culture being promoted as the only appropriate mode of existence. In fact, the unity of American nation is a myth in which our politicians believe and strive to make others to believe as well. There is no need for terrorists to strike fear in the hearts of Americans, in order to weaken this country. All they need to do is to turn off an electrical power in large American cities for a few hours, after it gets dark.

Citizens consumerist instincts will do its job these cities will instantly become civil war playgrounds. Thus, there are negative and positive aspects of consumerism that we can be discussing long and hard. Still, consumer culture is an integral part of objective reality and the most rational way of dealing with it is to take an advantage of this fact. Black people in New Orleans have proven themselves as being quite capable of doing this. Keeping this in mind will also allow us to eliminate the remains of racial intolerance in America. Do what you feel like and never stop consuming - should become the motto of every progressive individual in this country.
