Transferable Skills (1) It is very challenge able to come up with transferable skills development plan, which can me measurable, especially given the fact that this plan would have to be extended over next three years. First of all, let us specify the transferable skills that need to be improved. In my opinion, the most important of them is communicability. Having this skill is essential, while applying for majority of jobs. It also helps to achieve a professional excellence as much as the factual knowledge. It is clear that my communicational ability is not quite up to the standard, this is why I will have to work on improving it.

In order to be able to quickly adjust to the dynamic working environment, one needs to possess a very flexible mind. In its turn, it requires person to exercise its deductive ability on continuous basis, because only this can prevent him from indulging in mental dogmatism. It appears that my minds flexibility could be perfected even further. For this, I will need to spend more time analyzing the incoming information, rather then simply memorizing it. One of very important transferable skills is persons ability to think in logical manner. Only people whose decision-making is not affected by their emotionalism are preferred by the majority of employers.

For this, one needs to know how to logically access the incoming information and how to build an argument, while basing it on this information. My ability to operate with abstract categories can be described as adequate. However, I lack the skill of understanding the practical applications of abstract concepts. Therefore, I will need to make sure that I spend more time in the field, while using theoretical knowledge to deal with problems that need practical solution.

My plan of improving underdeveloped transferable skills is based on the principle of interactive learning. In other words, strengthening of every particular skill can only be thought within a practical context. At the same time, it is realistic and measurable, because at the end of 3 years term, my transferable skills will allow me to gain higher social status, by the mean of getting better-paid job. In three years from now, I want to be able to make $ 50. 000 a year and if I do not, it will mean that I failed to meet the measurable objectives of my plan.

These objectives can be reached, for as long as I continue to work on improving my underdeveloped transferable skills, which I have mentioned earlier. Therefore, my plan can be referred to as being very realistic, although it does not mean that we can talk about it as easily executable. Three years is more than enough time to improve ones transferable skills. This is why there can be no doubt that my plan is actually a time bound.

The plan itself will need to be broken up on smaller segments, which would deal with accomplishing local objectives - one at the time. The fact that my plan is composed of smaller plans corresponds to plans overall achievability. The educational goal can only be reached if proper strategy is chosen. In my case, there can be no doubt that I will only be able to improve my transferable skills, if I invest a lot of time and effort. The outline of the plan is following: 1) Improving my communicational skills by the mean of socialization.

For this, Ill need to attend more public places, which will provide me with additional possibilities to learn of how to be at ease, while talking to people. In three years from now, I should be able to freely express my points of view on different subjects, without the fear of being ridiculed. 2) Making my mind more flexible towards accepting fresh and unconventional ideas. This can be done by engaging in discussion about controversial topics. At the end of my development plan, I should be able to argue about social, cultural or political issues from opposite points of view. 3) Developing analytical ability.

This will require undergoing different IQ tests, as well as solving logical puzzles, which can be done in my spare time. In three years from now, my IQ will be increased to from 110 to 130. (2) The creative management technique, which I am especially fond of, is finding a fresh perspective on the essence of problem, when it comes to solving it. The reason why many people are having trouble, while trying to find an effective solution for the problem, is because their mind frame is too inflexible, which does not allow such people to broaden their horizons with the mean of brainstorming or any other technique that requires an application of mental effort. Some individuals are incapable of thinking about solving the problem outside ethical context, for example. Others simply do not dare to deviate from socially accepted methods of dealing with a challenge, because they think that this will hurt their reputation. However, practice shows that every problematic issue requires its own unique approach, which means that very rarely the solution to a problem can be achieved with the mean of applying some universal technique, which always remains effective.

Being able to look at the problem from the fresh perspective is always a crucial element of solving it. My own experience contains numerous examples of problem being successfully dealt with, after I refused to think about it as unsolvable. One time, I was in charge of running my fathers moving company. We had about thirty movers employed, from which 19 were African-Americans, 5 Puerto-Ricans and 6 White men. Our customers used to complain everyday that companys employees pressure them for tips and steal, during the process of moving. My father used to fire people who were being caught stealing and then he would hire new employees.

However, this did not solve the problem, because it was only the matter of time, before customers would start complaining again about the behavior of our movers. At first, I thought that employees racial affiliation was affecting their behavior more than anything else was. After all, there were twice as many Blacks being caught stealing than Whites or Hispanics. I suggested that we do not allow moving teams to be formed on ethnic principle, which was the common practice before, when we had Black, Hispanic and White moving teams that were composed of four employees. Because of this initiative, we began to include at least one White of Hispanic mover in Black team and other way around there would have to be Black person among White movers. This practice seemed to work, at the beginning.

Theft ratio was being significantly reduced. However, as time went by, it began to rise again. I could not understand the reasons why. Only after a few days, I was able to realize that I was basing the new team assembling principle upon the wrong premise. Apparently, employees racial affiliation did not define his inclination towards a certain type of behavior, as my father thought.

Working in small teams, prompts team members to trust each other, especially if the job they do is physical. It is only the matter of time, before moving heavy furniture cements a team to such a degree that movers begin to treat each other like brothers, regardless of whether they are Black or White. They begin to trust each other. This is why thieves are not afraid of being exposed by other team members, after they witness the act of theft. It dawned on me that I would have to reassemble teams every time I send moving trucks to work, at the beginning of every day. I needed to make sure that movers constantly rotate and that there are no permanent teams, where the feeling of professional solidarity could develop.

As a result, I was able to bring theft ratio down to almost zero. The only reason I was able to find an effective solution to the problem, is that I looked at the problem from fresh prospective. What also helped me a lot is that I only thought about human factor in the context of being able to make profit. While contemplating on the problem, I did not allow emotionalism to affect my conclusions. In my opinion, this can serve as the classic example of creative management technique being used with utmost effectiveness. (3) Transferable skills are the subject of many articles that can be found on the web. Usually, authors opinions differ, as to what can be considered as such skills; however, most of them agree that possessing transferable skills is crucial, when it comes to acquiring social prominence.

In her article Strategic Portrayal of Transferable Job Skills is a Vital Job-Search Technique, Katharine Hansen suggests that it is wrong to think of these skills as something rather abstract: One of the most important concepts you will ever encounter in the job-hunting process is that of transferable job skills. In fact, I tell my undergraduate college students that transferable skills are the most important idea I mention all semester. The deft use of transferable skills should pervade your job search and be a key factor in your resume, cover letter, and interview strategies (Hansen). She points out to the fact that many people do not know how to take advantage of their transferable skills, when it comes to writing professional resumes.

Apparently, for many employers it is very important to make sure that they hire a right candidate for the job. However, possessing diploma, on the part of candidate, does not always mean that he is qualified for the work he is applying for... Author provides readers with the example of how failure to mention her transferable skills in the resume, on the part of job applicant, cost this person a job. Hansen says that, when it comes to applying for new job, individual needs to exploit every possibility of assuring the potential employer that he will be able to keep up with his new responsibilities: One of the most important concepts you will ever encounter in the job-hunting process is that of transferable job skills.

In fact, I tell my undergraduate college students that transferable skills is the most important idea I mention all semester. The deft use of transferable skills should pervade your job search and be a key factor in your resume, cover letter, and interview strategies (Hansen). It is needless to say that I find Hansen's advice very useful. In future, before writing a resume, I will think about how my experiences and knowledge might benefit the company where I apply to get a job. The ideas, contained in article Transferable Skills...
