Why We Should Not Grant Amnesty to The Mexicans Introduction In the beginning of the XXI century the United States has faced the global threat of influential social changes. One of the most important aspects affecting these changes is a non-stop inflow of illegal immigrants from Latin American countries, and, first and uppermost, from the neighboring Mexico. In case the tendency continues, within the next few dozens of years the United States faces the risk to become the country where two cultures that virtually have nothing in common, and two official national languages, exist. Unfortunately, it seems that the country has no anyhow reasonable solution to this issue. As in any delicate issue, two completely different approaches to the issue exist.

The U. S. population was divided into two camps, where one part supports the decision to grant Mexicans amnesty, considering that the best way out is to legalize the illegal immigrants, and the second part opposes the decision, claiming that amnesty will not solve the problem, but result in even more grave consequences for the U. S. and its economy. Despite there is some reason in the arguments of those who support the amnesty, my opinion is that the illegal Mexicans shouldnt be granted amnesty.

Analysis In order to prove the hypothesis, it is necessary to look at the problem from different angles. One of the most important arguments brought in support by the people who are against immigration amnesty, is that amnesty will result in drastic increase in Latin American population in the United States. According to the official statistic data, more than 7 million illegal immigrants live in the United States (Amnesty: Both Sides of the Issue / Political St 2007). However, unofficial press and statistics reports indicate that the real quantity of illegal immigrants is considerably higher. The quantity of illegal immigrants, who arrive from Mexico in search for luck and better life, increases with every subsequent year, and it seems there will be no end to this.

At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the fact that more than 9 million Mexicans live in the United States officially (this figure is almost ten times higher compared with that of thirty years ago) (Gang 2). Obviously, nobody cancelled the rights to have a clear view of the situation in the United States as the country of emigrants. Yet, the modern American researchers, when comparing and contrasting the modern immigration processes in the United States with those that occurred during the past century, unanimously agree about one fundamental difference: in case in the XX century plenty of immigrants were entering the United States from almost all world countries (basically from Europe and Canada), nowadays the situation is significantly different. The vast majority of immigrants represent expatriate Latin Americans (mostly Mexicans).

Despite the myth that the United States is the country where many African Americans live, for the first time several years ago the quantity of Latin American population exceeded the quantity of African Americans. As a result, the United States faces the problem of illegal immigrants arriving from Latin American countries. Naturally, the United States government undertakes all the efforts to find an appropriate solution to this problem, as the quantity of immigrants (also illegal) increases. Therefore, one of the solutions was to grant the illegal Mexican immigrants amnesty in order to legalize their allegiance and to restore the order. There is no consensus on whether the Mexicans should be granted amnesty.

There is also no consensus on whether the legalization of Mexican immigration will be for the common good of the United States economy or, on contrary, will not do the U. S. any good. The scientists also hardly come into agreement concerning the issue to what extent the Spanish-speaking population will affect American culture and society. Those who support the idea of immigration amnesty, for example, the senior analyst from the Migration Policy Institute, claim that it is not recommended to press the population and to call the inflow in illegal immigrants a problem (Gang 2). According to her, Mexican immigrants are good and cheap labor force, and this fact is an obvious plus being of benefit to the American economy.

Moreover, the vast majority of Americans have a positive attitude to the Mexicans who inhabit the U. S. territories. Yet, naturally, the United States government should undertake all efforts to reduce the quantity of illegal immigrants. And here comes the issue of Mexican amnesty.

True enough, the United States citizens hardly have negative attitude to the Mexican immigrants. The subject at issue relates to illegal immigrants. More than 70 per cent of Americans consider it to be a problem, and more than 80 per cent of American citizens consider that the U. S. government undertakes inefficient measures to cope with the situation in regards to the illegal Mexican immigrants (Gang 4). The supporters of amnesty also claim that Mexicans do the most hard and labor intensive job they (due to certain reasons) do not want or are unable to do.

For example, the vast majority of waiters or road workers in the U. S. cities are Mexicans. Yet, in one way or other, these are working places that inherently belong to American workers who have no professional skills and get unemployment benefits. Although the scientists and analysts from the centers of immigration researches deny no fact that cheap labor force represented by illegal Mexican immigrants is a great help to American economy, it is difficult to deny the fact that illegal immigrants are also the source of significant losses and problems for the U. S.

government. In order to illustrate this opinion, one should consider the fact that by 2004 the overall losses made up more than 10. 4 billion dollars (Gang 6). According to the analysts, in case all illegal immigrants will be granted an amnesty, this figure will increase by 30 billion dollars per year. Evidently, the statistics is not impressive. It is even depressive, because legalization of illegal Mexican immigrants may undermine or even ruin the U.

S. economy. All data witness of fact that average income of Mexican families (including those, who live in the U. S. for the period exceeding thirty years) are considerably lower compared with those of American families. Although they comprise 4. 2 percent of the nations total population, Mexican immigrants and their U.

S. -born children (under 18) account for 10. 2 percent of all persons in poverty and 12. 5 percent of those without health insurance (Immigration from Mexico Study Examines Costs and Benefits for the United States 2007) The vast majority of Mexicans have no medical care insurance. Many Mexican families (even in case they have permanent jobs) have to use regional and federal programs aimed to support the citizens with low income, including nutrition tickers, partial tax exemptions, medical care treatment and many other social benefits. Moreover, the level of education of Mexican immigrants (including legal Mexican immigrants) is significantly lower than the average level of education of the U. S. citizens. According to those, who support the immigration amnesty, this strategy will prevent illegal immigration and will be conductive to reinforcement of immigration laws.

At the same time, this initiative will lessen the international tensions at national frontiers and secure the border. The supporters claim that they crack down on corporations that exploit undocumented workers (Why Immigrant Amnesty is the Best Solution to Border Security Issues 2007). Amnesty, within the frameworks of its program for casual workers, will be developed in compliance with the demands of U. S. economy and will not grant immigration amnesty to those Mexicans, who violate the U. S.

laws. To a certain extent, the amnesty will be conductive to U. S. security and strengthen national values. The opponents of amnesty mention the slow tempo of assimilation of Mexican immigrants.

In contrast to other immigrants, Mexicans prefer settling down in South-Western states. According to the statistics from the Center for Immigration Studies, more than 62 per cent of Mexican immigrants live on the west U. S. , while immigrants from the other countries traditionally spread uniformly (Gang 15). Due to this concentration Mexican immigrants have no need to learn English language, as they, in their vast majority, live within their co-citizens, where all of them speak Spanish. For example, in California, Arizona, and Nevada more than 20 per cent of schoolchildren are of Mexican origin (Gang 15). These indices are consistently increase and force the U.

S. government to reconsider the possible reform of entire education system in all these regions, and, probably, in the U. S. in general. So, the situation is quite threatening. Although George Bush proposed federal initiative, according to which all illegal immigrants could be granted a status of casual (temporary) workers, and, in such a way to legalize all illegal immigrants in the United States, this initiative hardly can be a solution.

There is an opinion that millions of illegal immigrants will get undeserved amnesty. Conclusion Taking into account all the facts, we can agree with the viewpoint that legalization of Mexican illegal immigrants will take away significant quantity of working places that belong to the U. S. citizens. Although it is difficult to argue with the fact that American is the country of immigrants and the country of endless opportunities, it is important to understand that immigration amnesty will provide no efficient solution to the problem of illegal immigrants, as it will do more harm than good.
