Running Head: Suffrage of Children without Fathers Suffrage of Children without Fathers (Authors Name) (Institution Name) Suffrage of Children without Fathers We shall begin this essay with the shocking fact that nearly 50 percent of American children may in our present times be going to sleep every evening without saying good night to their fathers. The declining factor of fatherhood is amongst the unexpected extraordinary trend that has set in and for children to grow up with fathers is likely to be the cause of many ills in our society such as criminal activities and failures in academic achievements. During the past decades beginning from 1960 s to the 1990 s the number of children not living with their parents had risen from 17 percent to 36 percent and thereafter it these numbers have been rising even faster. While this trend was never predicted, this declining standard in morality plagues societies in America and other parts of the world as the decline in fatherhood is blamed for causing a viciously growing circle that is the cause of rising crime, premature sex, births out-of-wedlock, teenage motherhood's, deterioration in academic standards, drug abuse, depression, alienation and eventually these cause poverty to the new generations affected by this factor.

With the unfolding of this calamity, the role of fatherhood is once again being re-evaluated and the script that was wrongly written that fathers could be replaced with other partners, stepfathers, uncles and others is being reviewed and correctly being rewritten once again. In the United Sates due to the collapsing of children's well being on breathtaking proportions, the rate of violent juvenile crime has increased manifolds with eating disorders, depression, teenage suicide, alcoholism, drug abuse and all this has been compounded by the fact that the poverty factor which was evident in the elderly is not directly affecting the young. The explanation for these can be put on the indirect upbringing that so many young people have in which they are raised by single parents and in most cases these being the mother. These unhappy developments are more adversely influenced by the commercialism, consumerism, television and the mass media factors. The values of religion is getting lost and the widespread access to firearms, addictive drugs, decay of social order, disrespect of the elderly and the declining standards of good neighborhood relations are also some of the causes, but when we try to find the reasons for all these negativity, there is strong evidence now that the absence of fathers in the lives of the young is one of the vitally important causes for this dilemma. Throughout time and cultures, the disruption in family life has been considered to threaten the well-being of children and human children are born in a completely helpless, immature and innocent state.

It takes years of nurturing and protection before these children achieve physical and mental independence. Therefore, years of interaction are required ideally with two parents so that these children adapt to develop as socially capable adults. Even otherwise children who are raised in virtual isolation from other human beings exhibit lesser natural socially recognizable patterns in comparison to children brought up by conventional two parent families with the same biological mothers and fathers. Consequently, the absence of one parent jeopardizes the lives of children due to the lack of presence and protection that two children can provide. At the same time, it has to be noted here is that in most of such cases the absence and denial to a child is that of the biological father.

While the bringing up of children is demanding, it is when two parents support and supplement each others deficiencies in conventional families that the chances for a better future for children increase. Research studies reveal that the role of the father is much more important then previously thought because when children are growing up, their interaction with their fathers is of a more emphatic type while with the mothers the interaction is more on easier and taking for granted basis. Furthermore, whenever children become fatherless for whatever reasons we can imagine, the immediate effect on them is the economic restraint because the per capita on an average household for example in which a child has to remain immediately after a divorce has taken place declines by almost 21 percent. While there are never any guarantees in life about anything, similarly having a father at home does not guarantee that children will not be involved in criminal activities, but the presence of fathers in households does act as an excellent form of prevention. Research in this regards proves that 60 percent of the rapists in America; 72 percent of adolescent murderers; 70 percent of long term prison inmates are all from households that have no fathers. Theoretically speaking the natural disruption in family lives should be because of the death of one parent such as of mothers sometimes dying while giving birth besides parents even dying before the children have grown up as adults.

While in the past decades these were the reasons for children having to live with single parents with other close relatives, some unfortunate children had to grow up in foster homes and orphanages. The death of a parent or even both parents while severing the parent-child bonding process, disrupts the presence and protection that is required to develop in children the early and deeper human attachment to people who can provide uninhibited love and emotional commitment and care to them. The loss of parents due to death can be the most severe and extreme loss that children have to bear, they somehow come to terms with this as a pre-destined natural process of life. But when children are forced to live only with their mother because of the absence of their fathers due to separation or divorce, the finding of answers to questions as why this is so is a continuous life long process that is more stressful and makes the children even feel guilty at times if they try to justify and blame this absence on themselves.

Research and studies prove that children whose one or both parents have died are more likely to succeed in life when compared to those children whose parents divorced or never-married. We therefore can conclude that being fatherless due to a death of a father can never be replaced with the justification of children having to live without them due to the separation and divorce factors. While the advances in medi-care has reduced the mortality rates dramatically in comparison to past times so that children as well as parents can live their natural long lives without problems, the present trends in family disruptions are because of separations, divorces and children being born out of wedlock. In social term these factors half a century ago would have been considered as being stigmatic and forms of deviant behavior, in our present times all these facts are considered as the natural and accepted ways of modern lifestyles. Across time and cultures, fathers have always been considered essential with the conventional family consisting of a mother, father and children being the universally accepted social institution. Throughout history the birth of children out of wedlock has been out of cultural norms and remained a concern for the legitimacy of children.

However, the fact that mothers are more biologically attuned and committed to bear and nurture their children and more naturally accept their roles, the roles of the fathers are often conflicting and differ in their process. The phenomena of children having to grow up fatherless is not limited to only America, the lives of divorce and out-of-wedlock children are being negatively transformed the world over where such unfortunate children live. Children from disrupted families will continue to do worse than children from conventionally intact families. They risk manifolds to be poor in later life and suffer emotional and behavioral problems and are more likely to drop out of school, be involved in sexual activities at much younger ages, with females getting pregnant in their teens, be more likely to pick up alcoholism and drug addiction habits and run the risk of being more in trouble with the law. In Canada, almost 40 percent Black children and more than 66 percent of Jamaican-Canadians grow up without fathers. In far away Moldova as an example in Asia, estimates put out of every seven adults one leaving the country to look for work elsewhere leaving behind children who suffer even more because unlike the Americas in many countries around the world, the social security system is almost non-prevalent and the absence of the father as the earner of the family can have devastating effect on the children.
