History Questions At what point in the Cold War does Churchill (1946) coin the term Iron Curtain? How does it impact events to follow? How does it link to the previous events? The term Iron Curtain is an image-bearing expression, a figure of speech given by Churchill in his Iron Curtain Speech (March 5, 1946). Historically, Iron Curtain was used in the theaters as a safety measure.

In Churchill's speech this phrase was used to describe an information and political border that divided the continent into two virtual parts, 1) the USSR and other communist countries and 2) the Western European countries. Churchill's speech "Sinews of Peace marks the onset of the Cold War. Iron Curtain separated the communist countries for a long period of time. It disappeared in the late 1980 s because of the policy of publicity. The dismantling of the Berlin Wall became the symbol of the eventual downfall of the Iron Curtain. Results of Treaty of Versailles Treaty of Versailles is the most important treaty of peace signed at Versailles in 1919.

The Treaty officially put an end to the World War I. Its main aim was to consolidate the positions of the countries-winners. Treaty of Versailles contained the statute of the League of Nations, clarification of the state frontiers between Germany and Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark, settlement of territorial claims and political structure of Europe. Germany was obliged to lead demilitarization and to refuse from all its colonies.

Events leading to WWI and WWII There were many events that lead to World War I. The direct cause was the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian separatist Gavril o Principal. This was the last straw that put an end to numerous diplomatic conflicts between the Great Power. Other causes include changes in Austria, unification of Italy and Germany, web of alliances, arms race, and complicated issues in German and French domestic policies. World War II occurred in result of two conflicts (the Second Sino-Japanese War in Asia and the other one that took place in Europe started with the German invasion of Poland. In result of this, the world was divided into two hostile camps the Allies and the Axis.

Reasons countries joined the wars World War I. France, Russia and Great Britain entered Triple Entente. All of them were concerned about aggressive German behavior. Every country wanted to protect its interests. France wanted to return its territories (Alsace and Lorraine), Italy (even being in an alliance with Austria and Hungary) wanted to return Trentino, Trieste and Fiume. Poland wanted to reconstitute its government.

The nations of Austria-Hungary wanted to become independent. Russia wanted to have influence on Balkan and to oppress Germany. Germany, in its turn, wanted the utter defeat of the enemy in the face of France and Great Britain, and to unite the countries of Central part of Europe under its commandment. Great Britain wanted to defeat Germany. What concerns World War II, France and Germany had been competing for the dominance in Europe. At the same time, the USSR posed a threat to become an all-mighty country that could become a superpower.

Therefore, World War II was some sort of a preemptive war against the Soviet Union. Womens role in WWI and WWII The wars contributed to significant social changes. Women became more independent compared to their roles in the historical past. World War I contributed to developing their political rights. They worked in munitions factories, some of them were even fighting hand in hand with the men (e. g.

Womens Land Army). Some of them were used as secret agents (e. g. the members of Special Operations Executive), thus playing a crucial role in the wars. Political Ideologies of the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War The Cold War was mainly an ideological confrontation between the Communists and non-Communists. Thus, the United States wanted to defend the cause of peace, freedom and democracy.

The Soviet Union wanted to spread communism worldwide and to maintain control of the European countries by establishing their totalitarian communist order. Level of responsibility of the USA and Soviet Union for the Cold War The Cold War was a rivalry between two competitors, between two political ideologies USSR and USA. Therefore, the Soviet Union accuses the USA that it should be responsible for the Cold War, because the USA wanted to practice imperialism and suppress revolutionary activity, while the US considers that the USSR wanted to impose their communist order throughout the world. It seems, that both countries should be responsible for the Cold War, however, it should be taken into account that the Ussr's behavior was very aggressive, thus forcing the US to react in such a way.
