Moonlit Landscape with a View of the New Amstel River and Castle Kostverloren Introduction The light in the art is omnipresent and ubiquitous. The light was worshiped by all nations; the Sun, the Moon, the stars, fire and the lightning were personified in mythological images of Mitra, Aton, Brahman, Ishtar, Venus, Prometheus, Zeus and many others. Since it came into existence, the nations tried to find explanation to the mystery of light. The celestial bodies, as well as other earthy bodies and substances that reflected its shining were the subject of adoration. People said their prayers to the Gods, who were associated with the light. The medieval artist depicted the Gods and saints with the golden halos, patches of sunlight; they filled the churches and temples with the radiant light stained-glass windows, the shining of mosaic and golden frameworks.

Historically, the artists used luminous effects in their paintings to highlight the main idea of pictures and to attract the viewers attention by matching lights in a picture, shadows, reflections, contraposition between cool and warm colors at lighted and tinted surfaces of the painting. The painting worships light in its majesty. The exhibition Radiant Darkness: The Art of Nocturnal Light is truly captivating in its attempt of exploring the representation of light in darkness (Radiant Darkness 2007) Moonlit Landscape with a View of the New Amstel River and Castle Kostverloren The exhibition Radiant Darkness: The Art of Nocturnal Light (April 24 July 22, 2007), which takes place in the Getty Center Los Angeles, demonstrates how the 1400 - 1600 s artists represented light. Id like to dedicate my paper to the painting Moonlit Landscape with a View of the New Amstel River and Castle Kostverloren (oil on panel, 22 1 / 2 x 35 5 / 16 in) (1647) created by Art Van der Neer. The painting is a part of exhibition located in the Getty Center, Los Angeles. The Getty Center is known both for its amazing exhibitions and for its unsurpassed architectural style.

Once being a small museum in ersatz Roman villa, the building was restructured by Richard Meier, the American master of the modernist style. The very location in the 48, 000 -square-foot Getty Center makes the exhibition remarkable. Radiant Darkness includes 21 works of art divided into four sections: candlelight, divine light, firelight and moonlight. The location in the museum is carefully chosen to combine the initial intent of the artist and the context of the landscape painting. Looking at the Moonlit Landscape considerably differs from the experience of seeing the images in class, because the effect of presence allows you exploring the painting in a three-dimensional space, feeling the emotional intensity of the painting. The moonlight landscape is very interesting.

From the one hand, the landscape is one of the most preferable genres of painting. From the other, the vast majority of the artists consider the landscape to be of minor importance. Some of them consider that the landscape requires less skills and talent compared to portrait. However, truly perfect landscape requires even more responsibility, talent, skills and attention. A good landscape reflects the feelings of the artist, expressed in the painting.

The more sincere and talented the artist is the more interesting and attractive his landscape is. Such landscapes remain engraved on one's memory for a long period of time. Actually, the very mentioning of the paintings name evokes the entire painting in its full color. The Moonlit Landscape with a View of the New Amstel River and Castle Kostverloren is one of such paintings.

The Moonlit Landscape is a big, almost panoramic landscape made in warm and dark colors. As any other masterpiece, it reflects the idea and has the mood of its own. This landscape cannot be called a mere copied image of the river, the castle and the forest edge. It is the emotional, deep-felt impression that allows the viewer to feel the nature and to listen to the sounds of the night forest.

The Moonlit Landscape gives the viewer the feeling of the beauty and the feeling of the unity of the man and nature. Art Van der Neer is a Dutch artist (Amsterdam, 1603 - 1677) (Art van der Neer 2007). Although he was not very popular in his own time, he had great impact on European landscape painting. The Moonlit Landscape is evidently one of the best Art Van der Neer's paintings. Although the artist managed to retain monochrome color (with an intensified contrast of treatment of light and shade), the very intensification of grey-blue and yellow-brown tones allows creating the cheerful and mysterious image of Dutch moonlit nature.

The artist used all methods of composition and painting technique, including the surface waviness, wavy lines of the landscape, the curves of the low-level clouds, soaring into the sky, the light depiction of the river, walking in a dancing gait, and flexibly joyous stroke of the paint brush. The tonal coloring and the diagonal composition underlines the depth of the moonlit landscape. The artist is not limited to variation of already existing artistic solutions and painting techniques. He prefers classically balanced collected images of nature with the elements of monumental objects. The river is surrounded by branch trees; the river itself is majestic in its slow motion under the moonlit night sky. In case in the works presented by other artists the emotional mood is created by the dynamic and flexible light and air, Art Van der Neer's painting is full of a calm, strong, smooth flow of light that is evenly intensified to the horizon.

Such technique allows placing emphasis on spatial perspectives and the stretch of the landscape, thus creating the impression of freshness, space and breath of freedom. The river is the visual centre of focus. Being the main theme of the painting, it is the most beautiful and the most detailed part of the artistic design. As we read from left to right, and from the bottom upwards, the very composition of the landscape allows us making a stop in order to come back. All details of the painting underline its main content. The basic lines force the viewer to make a slow round, where the visual row gradually brings to the main focus of the landscape.

The artist avoided straight lines and, owing to this technique, the entire composition became more rhythmical. Limbs of tree, the forest edge, the river in its slow motion, everything directs towards the moonlit sky. The strokes of the paint brush also help to create the illusion of direction. The play of light and shadow creates a mysterious mood, where the tone and contrast sets off the main idea of the painting. No doubt, the moonlight and night landscapes were one of Art Van der Neer's specialties.

Art Van der Neer managed to express the space, its length and perspective through perspective position of the river and the forest edge. The river creates a conditionally endless tunnel that divides the paintings into two halves. The unsurpassed skill of the artist allows him to reach in depiction of a typical flat monotonous landscape an incredibly mysterious mastery. Art Van der Neer uses the rules of air perspective that allows giving an impression of an endless air space at the low angle of view.

The usage of tonal coloring underlines spontaneously acutely felt material unity of nature. The light and air environment seems to be almost tangible, while uniting the sky and the earth. It seems that for the first time in the history of landscape the sky (the moonlit night) starts to play an active and emotional role. Works Cited Art van der Neer. 13 May 2007 < web >.
