Helping a Dear Neighbor Growing up in an environment wherein I am always left alone, I tend to long for companion or just simply look for someone I can talk to or focus my attention to help me forget about my loneliness. I try my best to keep myself busy to feel productive. My parents were always at work. I understand that life is hard so they have to work for us to be able to acquire the lifestyle that we want.
In our neighborhood, we treasure friendship and hospitality. We welcome every person that will visit our doorstep and accommodate people who are in need of our help. In my case, I have this neighbor who is about 70 years old. His children left him and went somewhere else to work. He was left with his nanny. I would see him working in his house.
I call him Mr. Handyman. He loves to fix things and keep everything tidy. Until one day, everything changed. He had an eye problem called glaucoma. This is when a white stuff covers your pupils till you cant see anything anymore.
He had surgery for it, but the doctors werent able to do anything about it because the case has gotten worse already. This caused his depression. Who would be happy knowing that you will go blind in a few years? He still went on with his usual routine, but not as jolly anymore. This is where I come in. I was close to my grandfather.
When he passed away I was so depressed and sad that whenever I see an old man I feel like helping them and I want to be close to them because I see the image of my grandfather. Having an elderly neighbor made me happy in a way because I saw him has my second grandfather. I would always visit him and talk to him. Then one day, he was rushed to the hospital because he got a mild stroke, after that incident, he had a hard time recovering. I felt that the his depression was eating him up since he was used to moving around all the time and doing things, and when his eye problem came plus this, he couldnt be as productive anymore. Having said this, I sympathized with him.
Everyday I would go to his house and take care of him, I would feed him, help change his diaper and his clothes. I would also go to the grocery since the nanny cannot go because she has to look after him. Sometimes, when I have extra time I would cook as well. My heart just fell for that man because he reminded me so much of my grandfather. I was able to do things that I did not expect myself to be doing. I even spent more time staying in his house than mine.
After a few months, he was confined once again in the hospital. I couldnt go there as often like I used to in his house because I had school. So I was only able to visit every weekend or when I get off from school really early. I stayed by his side the whole time, till his last breath.
Talk about helping your neighbor. I did more than just help. I loved him like my own grandfather. Others may think that what I did was exaggerated, but its the truth. When I get close to someone, I really do everything I can to make them feel better and make them feel that they always have someone to help them.
