China Introduction This essay is going to describe in brief the present relationship between China and the United States in one part and in the second part the impact that China presently has on the world as a whole. China United States Relations The relations between these two countries through out the ages have always been a step backward and a step forward, however, the relations between China and the United States have remained stable and will continue to remain good despite the bumpy road ahead for these two countries. On its part, China realizes that an adversarial relationship with the worlds remaining superpower would have a contradictory effect in its efforts to raise its international stature. On the other hand, the relationship between these two countries are a fact of life and not a matter of policy preferences as they are linked by cultural, social, scientific and commercial ties that bind them together rather in a marriage of compulsion, than a marriage of choice. Both these countries are engaged in bilateral trade that exceeds the $ 100 billion mark, which continues to grow with every passing year. Although more than 60 % of this trade surplus is in Chinas favor, this unacceptably high figure has to be brought under control; however, it is this overall trade and investment that anchors and counter-balances the sometimes volatile relationships between these two countries.

While there have been many controversial issues between these two countries including the important one over the Tiananen Square incident and various others, the most contagious one has been over the United States decision to sell military ships to Taiwan so that it would have the ability to defend itself. While the fallout from such dilemmas does deepen existing mutual strategic suspicions of each other, there are numerous areas such as in security realms, prevention of fissile nuclear material, stemming of WMDs, combating narcotics, crime, smuggling, terrorism etc. where their interactions are positive. (USA ENGAGE Chides Gephardt on Call to Reject Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China; Disadvantage China; Dave Monis, 2001; Elias Hicks & US, China, Taiwan Relations) Chinas Impact on Global Relations China raced past Japan in 2003 to become the worlds second largest consumer of petroleum products and its insatiable this continues to grow more and more and it has forced it to embark on oil hunting diplomacy. China has also been aggressive in building relationships wherever it can find opportunities to expand its trade network and is not fussy in its selection policy in this regard. While technologically China may not be as advanced as the West, but it more than compensates with its cheap manpower and the wide-ranging manufacturing facilities it has developed in the last few decades after the changing of its economical policies and after opening itself up to the world.

In recent years, China has also become the largest importer of steel in the world and driven up the prices of these two commodities to new highs. On the export side, China manufactures every conceivable low to very high quality commodity and it has replaced the United States as the exporter of high tech products. The economic boom that China has witnessed has made its economy much stronger and amongst the community of nations, its stature has risen to new heights. China can even be considered as the superpower of the 2 nd and the 3 rd world because it has no qualms about doing business with states considered pariah such as North Korea, Iran, Venezuela and many African countries such as Sudan, Zimbabwe and others. In fact the visit by the leaders of China to a number of neighboring countries and far away countries was to boost relations. During the past few months, China had also invited a number of leaders from African countries to finalize business, technology and industrial setting up deals.

With the rapid transformation that is underway in China, it will not be long before it emerges as an economically strong superpower with a military to match.
