Our social and economic problems are often a direct reason for crime. In a vicious circle, these problems can fuel crime even more. For example, those who commit theft and burglaries often do so because of their need for money. These individuals may be unemployed, incapable of finding work, homeless, sick or impoverished. These crimes become a tempting way to quickly acquire money. Examining the complex realities surrounding the concept of crime, people can understand how changing social, political, psychological, and economic conditions may affect the crime.

For example, as cultures change and the political environment shifts, behaviour may be criminalized. Antisocial behaviour is criminalized and treated as offences against society which justifies punishment by the government. In the work we try to find the root causes. These include, but are not limited to, greed, inadequate corporate oversight, poverty, lack of education, homelessness, drug addiction, racial hatred, and lax gun laws. Do you think that crime is truly a symptom of a dysfunctional society? Sociologists, psychologists and scholars have proven that violence and crime are consequence of many problems.

It is evident that crime spreads at an alarming rate through our cities. Though billions of dollars urgently needed for education, health care, etc. , are used to build more prisons and hire more police, but no one is safe from the threat of rising violent crime. Like smokestacks pouring pollution into the atmosphere, individuals suffering from stress pour stress into the environment, creating the ground for crime, violence, and conflict in society. The approaches that have been tried repeatedly -- more police, longer prison terms, military force, peace agreements -- have ultimately failed because they fail to solve the problem of high levels of stress in society. (Stenson, pp. 5 - 7) The complexities of crime and violence in our culture defy a quick fix.

There are a lot of problems the society is facing that make the situation worse such as the growing gap between rich and poor, and the proliferation of guns. New surveys shows that drug problem is growing. Statistics show that drug used by young people has doubled since 90 s. Modern drug policies are demonized and criminalized without offering help. Most of all, there is the dangerous rise in intolerance based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexual preference. Modern societies have failed to nurture and protect children.

All these contribute to the climate that threatens us all. (Stenson, pp. 7 - 10) Young people have quickly responded to basic changes in society by developing individual survival patterns. It is time when a person is confused about the future, does a lot of wrong things, tries to be independent from the parents and throw down a challenge to the society he / she lives in. As a rule they reject the way of life their fathers have prepared for them. Very often parents are not ready to help their children.

Basic social, economic, and political changes in a society, as well as the crisis of traditional social institutions affecting, among others, the younger generation (primarily in regard to the family and school), dramatic transformations in the notion of heritage, alienation of youth from politics and culture, young people's changing attitude toward moral values and entities like jobs and earnings. The worst thing is that it is difficult to work out constructive political and legal approaches to the younger generation to help these people with some of their problems. (Fitzgerald, pp. 15 - 16) Social expectations of young people are inseparable from the socioeconomic situation. Nowadays there is an increasing number of young people holding more than one position or job, moonlighting, making things for sale, rendering paid services to the population, engaging in entrepreneurship, starting trading businesses. Paradoxically, young people has got economically active, and at the same time, more pragmatic and spiritually restrained. (Holt, 1997) Another phenomenon is that a great many young people these days think less of mental work, education, research, and knowledge in general. All this takes time, and they want things done overnight.

And so they plunge into business headlong, grabbing quick bucks here and there, wheeling and dealing, acting as commercial intermediaries without proper training and experience. An increasing number of these people are making money in a manner far remote from honest and painstaking professional work. (Holt, 1997) In short, problems faced by young people could be grouped as follows: employment; worsening conditions of young families, obliteration of their educational functions; growing housing problems; crisis of cultural and moral values; lowering public activity. All the problems cause the increase of youth crime rate. There is an interrelation between economic hardships and the crisis of consciousness and cultural and moral values. The situation is always worsen during the times of instability in a society. In America it happened after the World War I.

After the War America was in chaos and violence. It was a time of Great American Depression in 20 s 30 s years. The generation start to live extravagant and wild life. The conservatism of previous generation was changed into desire to make more money and to become popular. Personal perception of a life value was based on famous American dream of happiness and individualism.

It was a time of material excess and quick prosperity. During that time there were many people from lower social background, who made fortune. Very often the sources of their incomes were speculation or criminal. Rich and powerful gangsters and killers were like idols for a lot of young boys and girls. From the other hand many people with good education were unemployed and had no chance to find the way out of the poverty and misfortune.

It was a time of not only economical but inner or personal depression of American people, their inability to overcome reality. The society needed a long period to overcome after-effects of the Depression. (Fitzgerald, pp. 23 - 24) It goes without saying that economic instability influenced greatly the other processes in a society. Lets take for example the period under Ronald Reagan ruling, 80 s. The wealthy were becoming richer and the number of millionaires and billionaires was skyrocketing, there was another reality. Since 1973, 80 % of all families had seen their incomes decline or remain stagnant. The average American worked longer hours for less income.

It was the great truth of U. S. society. Inflation- adjusted median income collapse by 32 % from 1973 to 1990. Americans at the bottom end of the wage scale have become the lowest-paid workers in the industrialized world. (Fitzgerald, pp. 45 - 47) The nations economic downturn not only impacted low-wage, poorly educated individuals, but affected college graduates as well.

More than one third of college graduates were forced to take jobs not requiring a college degree. The role of education decreased. Home ownership, a key part of the American Dream, was in rapid decline for the average worker. As a result of lower incomes, an increasing number of young people no longer can afford to purchase homes. Millions dropped out of the middle class into poverty, while hundreds of thousands of poor people sleep on the streets. When the 1980 s began, there were scattered pockets of homeless and childhood hunger.

When the decade ended, widespread homelessness and hunger existed in almost every American city. The 1980 s was, indeed, a decade of contrasts. (Stenson, pp. 65 - 67) The culture of the decade had materialistic basis. It was a time of economic growth when people tried to accumulate as much stuff as they could. Young people did not get a good upbringing because of the poverty or because of the lack of family upbringing (in 60 s the society began to get money but ignored its kids problems). There were a lot of troubled children. Many of them were college dropouts.

Most of all, it was a time when people could make successful careers but were unsuccessful in marriage. So, the role of the family in the society was diminished. It was a time of the misunderstanding of the sense of life, wrong approach to the lifes value and the downfall of illusions. Most of all it should be said that the desire to possess more wealth lead a lot of young people to commit a crime. From the other hand people who live in a highly stressed area are regarded to the lower social-economic ladder and often have no excess to higher education. Extreme poverty leads them to drugs and crime. (Stenson, pp. 67 - 70) Nowadays the rate of migration is very high.

It is the other problem that causes an increase of crime in a country. Lets take for account the United States. According to the last statistic data the population of it is growing by 2. 5 million people annually; and almost one million of it is immigrants from other countries. In the 1960 s, the Dominican Republic had great economic problems. It caused a vast migration of Dominicans. They came without higher education, poor and without documents.

Thats why they had no chance to get good job. The largest community of them is in New York and it is are considered to be the most intensely criminalized part of the city. The part is often associated with poverty and violence. It is creating racial stereotype.

But young people and children have no enough forces to destroy bad stereotypes and often follow the wrong path imposed them by the society. (Stenson, pp. 75 - 78) Information and television have become the drug of the Nineties. The researches show that, as information sources such as the Internet and TV proliferate, people are witnessing the rise of a generation of data- and filmholics. It is known that the most sensitive part of a society is children and youth. Teenagers spend a lot of time in front of TV. It is necessary to emphasize that youth are the most at risk of the dangers of television. They watch more television, they watch more unsupervised television, and they see less positive characters on television.

A combination of these factors leads them down a much darker television path. They are more at risk for the effects of violent television and their self-esteems are more likely to suffer to the negative stereotypes they see on television. There are small changes being made, but great leaps need to continue. (Gray, 2005) For example, for a long time negative and, sometimes, unrealistic pictures from African-American life have been bombarding children and teenagers. It has created an image of bad African-Americans in a true American society. The worst in the situation is that black children began to copy bad behavior of personages introduced in films or TV-shows. It is not a secret that the best sold pictures are of in the hood movie genre.

Most of all they are the most favorite ones among young people. Those pictures show gangsta lifestyle. In some of them gangsters are main heroes. As a rule bad roles are played by Black actors. They attract young people because as a rule they have money, power and can influence events. And as it is known children and youth have unstable characters, they are impulsive and can be affected by images introduced in movies. (Gray, 2005) But in many films main heros dreams are reached with the help of violence.

Film critics prove that a society and its problems are depicted in modern films. But it goes without saying, that the process is mutual. Films and their heroes influence greatly a society. Steven F. Gray says that many children now imitate the dress, dialect and violence associated with the portrayed in the currently popular pictures.

The picture we see in films when mothers are on welfare, fathers are unemployed, drunkards, or absent altogether is a reflection of the society. Very often events in a picture are taken from the life of one family or one person. But a lot of people see the film and often imitate behavior of main characters even not realizing it. (Gray, 2005) In conclusion it should be said that though modern generation is more pragmatic and actively independent; it does not expect the state or anyone else to solve their problems; but it shows less cultural demands and take a simpler approach to cultural and moral dictates. There is a crisis in terms of ideals, and a loss in terms of general human values. And it is for sure that the society and its inner and foreign policy have become the reason of such changes.
