CBS EVENING NEWS WITH WALTER CRONKITE VS. THE HOUR 2007 CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite vs. The Hour The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and The Hour are two mews programming shows which are incredibly respected, well-known, and admired. They have their similarities and then they also of course have their differences; there are certain issues in this regards which should be examined and discussed, in order not only to determine the pros and cons of each show, but as well to be able to understand what aspects must be looked at in order to be able to see the differences between two different eras of broadcasting history. By comparing and contrasting these two programs which are from the same genre but which are from different eras of broadcasting history, we will be able to do just this, and this is the intention of this study.

In order to do this there are going to be several issues in particular which are discussed, such as the changes in the content and the style of the program, but also how these changes reflect broader in regards to that of the commercial, creative, technological, and governmental aspects of broadcasting. By doing this, we will be able to get a much more knowledgeable and understanding view on the changes that have been made over time in news broadcasting programs, and as well there will be a better acknowledgement in regards to these two television programs in particular. This is what will be dissertate d in the following. The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and The Hour are both news programs which are incredibly successful and popular, however each is from a different era in broadcasting, as the CBS Evening News is a news program which was first broadcast in the year 1948, whereas The Hour is a news program which was not broadcast until the beginning of the year 2005. Although different people host the show in the present day, it was Walter Cronkite who took over the anchor chair for the CBS Evening News from Douglas Edwards in 1962. Walter Cronkite became a true American icon during the process of his time as anchor for the show, and Cronkite's image continued to gain even more appeal during his time as anchor, as he anchored a number of different incredibly significant and timeless stories, such as the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969, for example.

Then in late 1972 he covered the story after much persuasion from himself onto the shows producers of the Watergate scandal, which had been heavily covered by The Washington Post but hot not received heavy national coverage (Wikipedia, 2007). In regards to The Hour, this is a show which is broadcast on CBC, and which is, in a way, a sort of modernized version of The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, and The Hour is considered as being a national current affairs show on CBC television hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos. Its not a newscast. Its not a magazine show. The Hour has a different take on the news through the lens of George and company (CBC, 2007). There are various interview segments with a wide spectrum of guests, including politicians, musicians, writers, actors, and more.

When comparing these two shows, there are many different issues that need to be taken into consideration and used to contrast the differences between the two, as well as point out the similarities. For instance, the actual changes in the content and style of the programs is incredible, as when we look at the content and style of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, we can see that it was very professional, almost stiff in a way, but massively informative. Due to the time that this news program was broadcast in, which was the early 1960 s to the beginning of the 1980 s, obviously there was a huge gap in regards to generation that was watching news programs at that time and how they wanted their news delivered, as compared to the present day; during the era that the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite was broadcast, people wanted their news delivered simply and straightforwardly, and Cronkite was able to do this impeccably. However and largely in part due to the incredible technological advances that have taken place over the past few decades these days news is delivered in a very different way, using different formats and different contexts, such as with The Hour. One matter in particular in regards to the matter of the difference in content is that of sexuality, as this would have rarely if ever been an issue that was discussed in the Cronkite era, however in the majority of news programs today, there has been an explosion with it, so much so that it seems you cannot get away from it, even if you wanted to. However this is not to say that The Hour only covers this and nothing else, because this is absolutely not true.

Stroumboulopoulos is able to accurately and intelligently deliver the news, in a modernized and advanced way. The style of the shows is one of the most obvious differences when speaking of comparisons, as the style of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite was a show that was set up with a straight camera angle on Cronkite, the typical news program camera shot it was simple, and it allowed viewers to only have to see what they wanted, which was a straightforward and proper deliverance of the news. Stroumboulopoulos, however, on The Hour, is not sitting behind a desk, but rather we have the show that typically begins with Stroumboulopoulos narrating a video collage of what is going to be coming up over the next hour, and the show begins with the song Use It by The New Pornographers. Even from this alone we can see how much more laid back this show is, however certainly not so much that the show loses any of its prestige or professionalism. It is simply that the content and style of the show has been directed towards the general audience of the present day, which is one that is much different than that of the general audience that existed during the Cronkite era. All of these previously discussed changes have a purpose, namely in regards to that of reflecting much broader changes that have taken place in the commercial, creative, technological, and governmental aspects of broadcasting; there are so many new and diverse issues that are taking place in the world today, especially compared to that of over twenty years ago, and so thus the way that this news is delivered has had to be modified and updated as well.

While the more sexual aspects are, for the most part, in regards to commercial changes that have taken place over time, there are also many different changes that have taken place in regards to the governmental aspects of broadcasting. For instance, with the war that is going on in Iraq at the present time, there has been more news coverage than perhaps ever before for something this large, and this is not hard to see, as basically in every news program, let alone The Hour, you basically get at least one story speaking of this topic each day. The governmental aspects in broadcasting have changed quite a bit, as When commercial television was set up there was, in crude terms, a bargain struck between the government and the ITV franchise holders: the government allocated the analogue frequency in return for psb obligations (National Union of Journalists, 2006). The NUJ (National Union of Journalists) have accepted these changes, and they believe that change is necessary within broadcasting and believes that this is a good opportunity to re-evaluate psb obligations in the digital age (National Union of Journalists, 2006). Another one of the most major differences between the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos is in regards to that of the technological aspects of news broadcasting, as during Cronkite's era the technology was not nearly as advanced as it is today, and so there are much more advantages that shows such as The Hour have with this newfound technology, and it is only going to keep improving as time goes by.

However although there are many differences there are also similarities as well, and one of the most major similarities is that of how well the news is broadcast and delivered in both of these shows. Despite over a twenty year time difference, the subject matter discussed is still put out in a professional and understanding manner in both cases, and we can easily say that the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite was one of the best news broadcasts of its time, just as The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos is one of the best news broadcasts of its time. They both have received great reviews, and have kept us as the general audience informed and more knowledgeable over the years, really taking us into their world as they deliver the news, and allowing us to be much more aware in general. From this review we can conclude many different things, several in particular, such as the fact that there have been monumental changes which have taken place within the news broadcasting world, and although for the most part these changes are considered as being incredibly positive, there are certain nativities that are considered as being present as well.

By comparing and contrasting the two news programs the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos, we have been able to understand many different issues in this regards, namely that of how different and yet how similar at the same time these shows are, despite the large generation gap that took place within the original broadcast of each show. We have been able to see many different things from this review, and one of the most important and significant conclusions that we can make is that of how the changes in particular to that of the content and style of each program have reflected broader changes in certain aspects of broadcasting in general, such as the commercial, creative, technological, and governmental aspects, for instance. We have been able to absolutely come to a much more knowledgeable and intellectual viewpoint overall on this matter from this review, and perhaps most importantly of all, we have been able to see both the pros and cons of each of the previously discussed news programs.
