Effective Use of Computers on the Battlefield of the Future Abstract This paper emphasizes the importance of using computer technology on future battlefields. Outline p. 1 Beginning of Computer Era in military p. 2 What future holds p. 3 - Conclusion The history of military conflicts in 20 th century shows that they tend to become less continuous, which is accomplished by the implementation of new informational technology. In 17 th century, wars often lasted for 30 - 50 years. World War One went on for 4 years, without any of the conflicting parties being able to break decisively trough enemy's defense line.

Millions of soldiers died needlessly, while being used as cannon meat. In Second World War, there were also many battles, which are now associated with the excessive casualties. This can be explained by the low informational efficiency of battlefield. Nevertheless, the example of the Gulf War shows that securing an informational advantage will play a crucial role in future wars. In its turn, this is directly related to the use of computers by the military. The computer technology was being originally developed for guiding ballistic missiles.

The most powerful computer, used by American military in fifties was ENIAC. It was capable of performing 5000 mathematic operations in one second. This computers primary role was calculating missiles trajectories. It is amazing how far the computer technology has progressed, in the field of military, ever since.

Today, it is virtually impossible to imagine a battlefield deprived of computer technology. Therefore, it will be logical to suggest that in future, computers will play even greater role in every armed conflict. It is well known that the JPS technology was being specifically designed to be used by American armed forces. In the near future, this technology will move forward even further, enabling every soldier in the battlefield to benefit from being aware of his geographical location. Portable JPS devices will become a part of soldiers basic equipment. Military experts suggest that by 2010, the development of JPS technology will be able to eliminate the risk of a friendly fire.

This will drastically reduce casualties. In very near future, every battle, before taking place in reality, is going to be simulated on computers. This will allow the military to figure what kind of weapon needs to be used, to produce the most desirable effect. The 3 D layout of every major city in the world is going to be created, in order for the soldiers to familiarize themselves with the future battlegrounds. This will create the situation when, for the first time in history, the invading force might enjoy a tactical advantage over the local defenders.

The war in Iraq proved that sheer numbers ceased to play role, even in modern warfare. What is important is the accuracy of military strikes. However, it is impossible to achieve such accuracy, without using computer technology. One does not have to be a prophet to suggest that the whole concept of warfare will evolve within a very short time. The armed conflicts will cease to exist, in traditional sense of this word, because they will be ended, before even getting a chance to begin. The outcome of the battle will be decided by the series of preventive strikes, by the mean of smart bombs.

Computer technology enables air force to take out enemy's most important military installments, at the initial stages of military campaign. After this is being accomplished, such campaign will turn into the series of pacifying operations. In the future, computers are likely to replace men as pilots and tank drivers. This, along with the substantial decrease of causalities, will also enable military to substantially boost the efficiency of its operations. For example, the planes are going to be able to fly with the speeds over Mark 3, which is impossible with manned planes, because of harmful effects of G-force on human body.

In addition, computer technology is going to replace men in the field of tactical surveillance. Such surveillance is going to be performed by fully computerized flying cameras. It will take seconds for the target to be destroyed, after being detected by such a surveillance plane. Future battleground will give the definition of infantry a new meaning. This is also because of implementation of computer technology. Soldiers are going to be able to see the vital information, related to the tactical situation, projected straight into their eyes with a tiny laser.

This information is going to be directly broadcasted to them from the military satellites. It will eliminate the need for many classical methods of warfare within a city, for example. The most important effect of computers implementation is that the element of uncertainty in the battle will be reduced to minimum. The development of computer technology has resulted in creation of completely new type of warfare informational.

It is not a secret society's normal functioning is dependent upon the proper maintenance of its infrastructure. We cannot imagine a modern city without transportation and communication systems. However, the functioning of these systems can be easily disrupted by attacking them with specifically designed computer viruses. In the society with the high degree of computerization, the absence of electrical power, even for a couple of hours, will automatically result in triggering a social chaos. These were only a few examples of how computer technology will affect the future battlegrounds. In the future war, the winner is going to be defined by the degree of informational saturation.

Sun Tzu once said that knowing everything about the enemy is half of the victory. In the future, this suggestion will become obsolete, because knowing everything about the enemy will mean nothing less of a complete victory. Throughout the history, armies with the higher degree of informational entropy have always suffered a defeat. On June 22, 1941 Soviet Union had 24738 tanks, including 1030 of the most advanced tank in the world T- 34.

Against this, Hitler had 3120 tanks of mostly obsolete models. Nevertheless, German offensive left Commies no chance, because Soviet Air Force was being destroyed in the first hours of war. Without air support tanks are blind, this is why they were being abandoned in thousands. The same will apply to the realities of future warfare informational efficiency is the most important precondition of victory. Such efficiency nowadays is exclusively provided by the computer technology. In distant future, this technology might even eliminate the need for humans to engage in hostilities, because robots will do this for them, while being more efficient as soldiers, from the informational point of view.
