Commie Dearest: Communism and Momism in the Manchurian Candidate Introduction The Manchurian Candidate (1962) is a movie, which we can clearly define as psychological thriller. But at the same time, unlike most of the movies that belong to this genre, Manchurian Candidate promotes a certain philosophical worldview, which can hardly be considered as politically correct in our time. It shows the inner connection between two seemingly unrelated topics the ideology of Communism and the power of feminine mystique, after it gains a political prominence. This feminine power, which expresses itself in form of social domineering, is commonly referred to as Momism.

The essence of this psychological phenomenon can be described in terms of Freudian theory, that is to say that it is closely linked with the issue of sexuality. The movies main idea is to show the destructiveness of Momism, after it expands over the boundaries of latent sexuality and becomes an active player, in the political arena. Today we are made to believe that the feminization of men needs to be thought of in terms of being beneficial to society, because it makes them more sensitive, gentle and loving. In schools, boys are encouraged to give up their toy guns, in exchange for dolls. The psychological suppression of men often assumes a grotesque forms, when they are afraid to look at women while in the same elevator, because it can be interpreted as sexist attitude, on their part. However, as it seen in Manchurian Candidate, the real effects mens feminization should be considered as having much more sinister nature.

This is because any ideological doctrine that defies the law of nature is doomed to failure. And it does not matter whether we talk of Liberalism, Momism, or Communism. The degeneracy can assume very appealing form, but it ultimately results in destruction and death. The beginning of the movie is very symbolical, in this respect.

The initial scene shows a ladies garden party, when the creation of psychological comfort for the American prisoners of war by Chinese communists is meant to serve only one purpose brainwashing. In my opinion, Manchurian Candidate real value is in fact that it promotes ancient notion that easy (feminine) path leads straight to hell, when embraced by men. (1) The Manchurian Candidate is about American soldier Raymond Shaw, who comes back to U. S. as the war hero, after being released by Chinese authorities that kept him as a prisoner of war for a couple of years. He is the stepson of Senator Iselin a hard core anti-Communist, who is trying to become a Republican nominee for the Presidential race. Raymond's mother Mrs.

Iselin appears to be the one who instigates her husbands political ambitions. After her sons arrival, she makes him the part of her political intriguing. At the beginning she doesnt know that Raymond was being psychologically brainwashed to become a robotic pawn in the hands of Communist manipulators. But even after it becomes clear to her, Mr. Iselin decides to use it to her advantage. By applying the same manipulative techniques, she convinces him to kill Mr.

Iselin's main rival, Senator Jordan. Yet, Raymond meets Josie, an innocent young girl, who represents the virtue of feminine submissiveness. Predictably enough, she is Jordans daughter. This leads to the situation when Raymond's chain of psychological commands, which define his actions, becomes disrupted. Being psychologically disarrayed, Raymond's behavior gets to be unpredictable. But he still remains under control of his Communist masters, who order him to kill the editor of Republican newspaper Hoban Gaines, for whom Raymond works.

He does it without feeling any remorse. As movie continues on, we realize that Raymond becomes more and more psychologically dependent on his mother, who finally convinces him that killing Senator Jordan is the only way for Raymond to redeem himself. Still, his conviction does not come as the result of rationalization. Mrs.

Iselin was simply able to trigger the chain of psychological commands, which led Raymond to murder Senator Jordan. She accomplished it by letting Raymond to hit the queen of diamonds, while playing solitaire with him. After the job is being done, Raymond automatically kills Josie as well, as he was being trained to eliminate witnesses. This results in the enormous amount of suffering, on his part, which finally helps him to break out of the cursed circle. He shoots both Mrs. Iselin and her husband, in the midst of political convention, before turning gun on himself. (3) The Manchurian Candidate cannot be considered as being clearly anti-Communist movie.

The Chinese Communists and Mrs. Iselin are related on the spiritual level. It is not by mere accident that the Communist ideology in China proved to be the most adapted for the realities of this country. For thousands of years, the form of Chinese governments remained despotism.

Mao Zedong used to say that Communism is a very natural worldview for the Chinese, because it corresponds to his nations cultural aspirations. But the truth is a bit different. The Chinese form of Communism is basically deprived of Communist ideology, in its core. This is why; in modern China, Communism peacefully coexists with Capitalism, side by side, which is absolutely impossible, according to classical Marxist theory. Chinese Communism is nothing but strive for raw power, for the sake of power and nothing else. But Mrs.

Iselin's political convictions have the same nature they are simply meant to conceal her irrational desire to rule and to dominate. This is why, at the end of the movie, Mrs. Iselin finds it morally justifiable to apply Communist psychological methods of influence to make her son to act in the way she wanted him to. We can even draw broader analogy. The moral dogmas of Capitalist society have a superficial nature. In the end, it also comes to down to obtaining more power.

Only the difference between Capitalism and Communism is that the political power, in the first case, is gained by the mean of money and in the second by physical elimination of political opponents. It is very ironic that Mrs. Iselin truly believes in her anti-Communist sentiment, while on the practical level, she becomes undistinguished from those who she hates with the passion. Therefore, we cannot suggest that Manchurian Candidate promotes any political idea, in the contemporary sense of this word. It is the idea of unnaturalness, which appears to be the movies foremost concern.

This is why we see Raymond committing murders in the most inappropriate places, which are strongly associated with femininity: garden, kitchen, and bedroom. It cannot escape viewers attention that movie emphasizes the absence of normal family-based relations between the main characters. Raymond does not relate to his step father as fatherly figure. The same can be said about Josie, because she more respects Senator Jordan than loves him.

Rosie (Raymond friends girlfriend) also appears as such that does not think about the notion of family in high regard. Yet, these characters strive towards psychological comfort, which they associate with femininity. But, while for Josie and Rosie this can be thought of as quite natural, Raymond's affection towards his mother only speeds up his ultimate downfall. It is the suppressive nature of female virtues that we see as psychologically destructive, when embraced by men. We can draw parallels between Manchurian Candidate and movie Fargo, where the most gruesome crimes occur in the midst of socially motivated politeness. In order for us to understand better the true geniality of this movie, we need to analyze the essence of female and male virtues, so that it would become clear to us why one cannot be substituted with the other and why it is inappropriate to suggest that it is for the mans benefit to play a submissive role, when it comes to the relations between genders.

This is a common knowledge that the emotional factor plays much important role in how women make decisions, comparing to men. The reason why women exercised significantly less political power, throughout the ages, is purely biological. Men can mentally detach themselves from their penises. Women cant do the same, as their genitalia are the essential part of their being.

Therefore, men are only sexual from time to time, which allows them to engage in other activities and gain excellence in them, while women are always sexual, they look at the world through the lenses of sex. This is why many abstract concepts have no meaning to them, since women cannot associate such concepts with reality. At the same time, they think of soap operas as real and absolutely legitimate, in artistic sense of this word. This is because the soap operas action revolves around the idea of sexual tension between the characters. The most noticeable about Mrs. Iselin is that she radiates sexual tension, even with her relation to Raymond.

In one of Manchurian Candidate final scenes, Mrs. Iselin kisses him on the lips, in the most inappropriate manner. Her character comes in very handy when we want to understand what is the essence of womens strive towards political domination. It is not their desire to change world, but to embrace...
