INTRODUCTION AND REFLECTION INTRODUCTION Despite its modernity and viewed as improvement in the hospitality industry, fast food outlets have their own history. With the concept of ready cooked food for sale came into life when Automat, a first fast - food opened its doors in July 7, 1912 in the United States of America. From the simple cafeteria Automat expanded into more restaurants in the country so as to meet the demand. The Automats became popular throughout 1920 s and 1930 s though other fast food restaurants had already hit the market, not only in America but also globally. However, fast foods now are facing controversy in satisfying their customers, while maintaining health safety and protecting consumers from food borne illness like obesity and cardiac disease. This came about after the introduction of hydrogenation 100 years ago so as to preserve soybean oils; the innovation has proved to have side effects due to its turning liquid oils into solid oils hence forming trans fat, which clogs arteries.
For many years I have been praising fast food for being quick and tasty which has been convenient for many people being students, workers, and travellers, to mention a few. As a student, grabbing food from fast food outlets has been easier, where most of students get their food. As a student the risk of being overweight is greater as it is cited in (JAMA, June 16, 2004; 291 (23): 2828 - 2833. ) Fast food consumption has increased greatly among children in recent years, in tandem with the obesity epidemic. Fast food tends to promote a positive energy balance and, for this reason, may result in weight gain. This has made me think twice about them and banning them could be more advantageous, especially as student accustomed to fast food. In a best- selling book 2001, Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser pointed out that while the innovations of the fast food industry gave Americans more and cheaper dining options, it has come at the price of destroying the environment, economy and small-town communities of rural America, while shielding consumers from the real costs of their convenient meal.
Though fast foods have been condemned, it has contributed positively to the American economy and the world as whole. This can be very much verified by the number of employees working in fast foods all around the world. Despite the fact that employees are low paid as low skilled labour, fast foods have managed to reduce the rate of unemployment, especially in the developing countries. Fast foods, apart from being quick to prepare have managed to reduce food prices, thus assuring hungry people of food at very low prices. Fast foods have not been ideal to the low income earners only or people in hurry, but also to travellers in transit at airports, train stations, and bus park stations. The switch that the $ 142 billion food industry has to make leaves room for argument to raise awareness to both authorities and the public whether fast food should be banned or not.
I hope this project will give much satisfaction in reading as it gave me when writing it and researching it, and as a student it will draw your attention to all aspects of fast food. It is informative and derived argumentatively to give you, the reader, and a clear picture of the situation. REFLECTION Though the work has been tough, I cannot deny the pleasure I had in writing, which I hope readers will enjoy and be adequately informed. News articles which have covered extensively on fast foods provided adequate information which made me spent longer time reading them to the point of missing my lunch.
More than five hours ended up reading news articles that appeared in Detroit Free Press, Dubai City Guide, United Arab Emirates, Boston Globe and Chicago Sun Times. News articles were not the only sources of information. Scholarly articles also gave the insight of fast foods in various aspects like fast food in relations with obesity and nutrition in children and adolescents. Some researches have been done in relations to students to see the impact of overweight which shaded more light to me more on the topic. A lot have been written on the issue, books and papers presented with various health associations like American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and without forgetting the best seller of book titled Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal. These journals and book made me spent the whole afternoon reading but the effort was rewarding to produce the well documented project.
Online encyclopaedia such as Wikipedia full of information about fast foods has been very useful which I after reading it thoroughly I got the confidence of writing the informative project. Search engines like Google cannot be left behind in this project as it opened a door to more links where information could be extracted. Though the task was bit tough in researching, reading and writing, it gave me joy which I hope it will be shared by you readers. CONCLUSION After reading a lot on fast foods when researching, debating whether will be it safe to ban so as to save more students from overweight, the realisation hit me that fast foods with its two face has impact in the society.
What is needed more is fast foods that adhere to health safety, guidelines, hence reducing the risk of increasing food borne illness. Sitting back and looking at the written work and hours spent researching, reading and writing, I come to the conclusion that it was all worthy writing.
