North vs. South From the early times America is considered to be a nation of liberty. At the same time, private freedom and liberty have constantly been a question at issue. In the 19 th century the major conflicts were about slavery, and the right of Black people to be free. At that time the United States occupied a large territory. Conditionally the country was divided into two large areas: the North and the South.

The both sides had different climate and territorial conditions as well as quite different ways of development. Thats why they have quite different attitude towards the problem of human rights and slavery, in particular. America faced the dilemma: to be proslavery or antislavery nation. The North with abolitionists was antislavery. The South was proslavery. As it was announced in the New York Tribune, "We are two peoples.

We are a people for Freedom and a people for slavery. Between the two, conflict is inevitable. " (Africans in America, 1998) Though the main cause of the Civil War is considered to be disputes about slavery; but, frankly speaking, there were a lot of in contrast between the North and the South. They were separated with distances as well as with ideologies. The only common thing was the country to live in. And may be the main reason was hidden in division of territories and powers, as it usually causes wars. Many years had passed before the conflict led to Civil War in 1861.

And during those years the idea of liberty had been constantly in the centre. Presidents and government wanted to enlarge the state of liberty. But they had to fight expanding the borders of America westwards well as expand the idea of "liberty" inside America. Western regions of the country were discovered; and new ideological movement abolitionists appeared. It was religion inspired reform movement and was developed in the North.

The movement struggled against enslaved laws and for more rights for women. James McPherson mentioned the abolitionists' deep beliefs: "All people were equal in God's sight; the souls of black folks were as valuable as those of whites; for one of God's children to enslave another was a violation of the Higher Law, even if it was sanctioned by the Constitution. " (American Civil War, 2006) In the 1700 s, there were great changes in the first thirteen colonies in America. They began to ignore their mother countries rules and establish their own. The Founding Fathers had to look for compromise with the states.

During the American Revolution the Constitution was ratified a united country was established. According to the Constitution, slavery was banned. But some states, primarily, southern, did not want to abolish slavery. In the 1820 s and 1830 s, the debates became heated. They were about the power: what has a right to ban slavery - the State or the Federal Government.

Gradually, the difference between the North and South became more obvious. From the very beginning the North and the South differed in climate and territory. These factors influence greatly the future development of the parts. There were small farms in the North; while industry was well-developed. The northern land was rich with natural resources. A lot of big cities appeared because northern people preferred to live in urban areas, not far from the places they worked.

New York was the largest city in the North. Big industrial cities and great opportunities attracted a lot of immigrants, who became the major labor force. So, slavery was replaced by immigrant labor from Europe. As a rule, Northerners were Republicans; and were interested in business, and medicine. They were well-educated.

There was quite different picture in the South. The soil there was fertile. Climatic conditions were perfect for farming. Agriculture developed well; thats why there was no need in industrial development. From the beginning the main crop was tobacco, later cotton. Farming needs a lot of labor force.

Black slaves were a cheap labor. They worked for food and clothes. It suited whites in the South. According to statistics, there were about 5. 5 million whites; and almost 4 million black slaves.

As a rule, plantations were located far from large settlements; and there were no big cities aside from New Orleans. Mostly, Southerners were Democrats and made military careers. Taking into account all differences, it becomes clear that there were different attitude towards slavery in the both sides. The history of slavery began in the seventeenth century.

As it was said though there were a lot of immigrants (who were indentured labor), there was a severe shortage of them, especially in the southern regions where transport system was not well-developed. In the seventeenth century first African slaves were brought in a Dutch ship. At that time it was met as a solution, but in future it brought a lot of problems. While slavery was dying out in the North; but it was flourishing in the South, when cotton replaced tobacco. Though a lot of white Southerners understood that slavery raised the moral and constitutional issues, but they could not help recognizing the economic benefits of it. Southerners arguments were that black people could not care for themselves; that whites gave them clothes, food and work.

But at the same time the real truth was that treatment of slaves was sometimes cruel and even sadistic. There a lot of examples in history. In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the famous story called Uncle Toms Cabin. In the work the author showed a real life of slaves. Later, in 1857 The United States Supreme Court in the Dred Scott Decision proclaimed that slaves were not citizens and had no rights. All the actions led to organizing slowdowns, sabotaging farm machinery and even committing murder of whites by slaves.

The tension between the South and the North grew. They became more and more different. They had different attitude towards national policy; and By the 1840 s and 1850 s North and South had their own political interests. In 1860, anti-slavery Republican Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election. It became the last reason that destroyed thin links between the North and the South. Southerners decided to protect themselves from interference of Northerners; and they found the only way out to separate from the United States of America.

Southerners established The Confederate States of America. Secession was viewed as an illegal act by Northerners. The fact caused the beginning of the Civil War. As historians testify, the war was one of the most brutal and bloody conflicts in American history. The American Civil War (18611865) was between the federal government (the "Union") and the Confederation, led by President Jefferson Davis. The Union has advantages in geography, manpower, industry, finance, political organization and transportation. (Africans in America, 1998) Those advantages helped the Federal government to win the war.

The South was defeated in 1864. Decades of diversification and slavery ended at the cost of more than half a million lives. Postwar era is known as Reconstruction. The main forces were directed on the restoration and strengthening of the Union.

Politicians had to put the divided country back together. President Andrew Johnson tried to reunite former enemies, issued The Reconstruction Acts of 1867. Most of all, there were two amendments (14 th and 15 th) that provided former slaves with national citizenship and granted black men the right to vote. (Africans in America, 1998) For the first time after the years of opposition the North and the South worked together. For several years after the war America was able to renew its economy. The time is known as The Gilded Age. During the time a great number of railroads had been constructed.

They moved goods and resources from the West to the East and in other direction. It helped to increase industrial development in the South. Most of all, the period is marked with a new wave of immigrants. So, there was a lot of labor force. President Andrew Johnson followed Reconstruction policy. According to it, provisional governors were appointed in each state.

They were committed to the Union. All measures that were taken at that time improved the unity of the country. Bibliography: Africans in America: Judgment Day. WGBH Educational Foundation, part 4, 1998. web American Civil War. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 2006.
