Diversity Paper The individual behaviour is greatly affected by ethnicity, gender, age and socio-economic status. It also needs to be said that all these factors derive from each other, therefore, we need to adopt a complex approach, while trying to understand their impact on individual behaviour. Ethnicity The ethnicity is the most important of all the factors, although it would be more proper to refer to it as race. We don't need to go far to prove that it is the racial affiliation and not the social aspects of one's upbringing, which subconsciously prompts person to act in one way or another. According to the statistics, African-Americans constitute 10 % of population in America, yet they are associated with about 80 % of all crime, committed in this country. We can deny the importance of ethnic affiliation all we want, as it is being done now, but again and again we will stumble upon the facts that prove otherwise.
Individual behaviour depends on the level of one's intelligence, which in its turn, is affected by the racial affiliation. In 1994 Richard Herrstein and Charles Murray had published book called Bell Curve. In it, they had proven that peoples IQ level directly depends on their racial background: In fact IQ is substantially heritable... the genetic component of IQ is unlikely to be smaller than 40 percent... For purposes of this discussion, we will adopt a middling estimate of 60 percent heritability, which, by extension, means that IQ is only about 40 percent a matter of environment (Bell Curve, p. 105). It is a common knowledge that the non-White students generally score much lower on IQ tests.
The authors of Bell Curve further suggest that: Race differences show whites aren't at fault for blacks being down, and making whites pay for something they " re not responsible for is a terrible injustice. This might sound utterly sexist, but it does not make it less true. The only exception that we can think of when women act like men, is when we talk of feminists. But it is important to understand that, after having become a feminist, women cease to exist, in traditional sense of this word. Therefore, we cannot truly consider them as women. They themselves are trying to emphasise their manliness by wearing pants and having short haircuts. Age Age is another important factor, which defines individual behaviour to a great degree.
When they are young, people are more likely to engage in high-risk activities, as they do not posses a very developed notion of danger, which only comes with age. On the other hand, older people are known to be more conservative and resistant to any social changes. Basically, they become more concerned about their own well being, as they get older, as opposed to the well being of the whole nation. This is due to the fact that an advanced age deprives people of their idealism.
It is especially becomes obvious, during the elections, when older folk readily votes for anyone who would promise them more security and health benefits, even though it would negatively impact younger generations. The most productive age is from 20 to 30 years, this is when people's lack of knowledge is compensated by their cheer energy. Also, it is the best age to conceive a healthy children. After 60 years old, people's behaviour slowly begins to turn into the one of a child. All it takes to confirm the validity of this statement, is one visit to senior citizens facility. Socio-economic status There is no doubt that every society and every nation is stratified.
The most democratic countries in the world divide its citizens on lower, middle and higher classes. Despite the universal equality concept, which is being promoted by medias in Western countries, it is a fact that people are not equal. Watchdogs of political correctness explain this by different social reasons. For example, Black peoples low standards of living are explained by the fact that they were not treated fairly throughout the history and did not have the same access to resources of every particular country where they lived. This approach fails to explain why Blacks of even middle class have generally much lower IQ level, comparing to Whites. Apparently, the root for social stratification is anthropological, or racial one.
The theory of Bell Curve, which is now being accepted by great many sociologists, effectively proves the fact that inequality among people is not socially but biologically based. In India there are 5 social casts that are anthropologically defined: the lighter is skin of every particular person the higher is its social status. This is being going on for thousands of years. Thats why I think its wrong to differentiate social and racial stratification, these are the opposite sides of the same medal. In my opinion, socio-economical status does not necessarily define individual's behaviour. Although, there is a tendency among rich people to live in secluded areas, where only other rich people can afford to live.
