The murder of Stephen Lawrence seemed to break this pattern. Stephens respectability and innocence generated a new march of protest: the idea that an innocent young man may become a victim of such an unacceptable activity used to be unthinkable for the nations people. It is a pretty well known situation that his friends and family were treated as if they were the criminals. How can we doubt that it took so long to give his parents an overdue apology in the form of their recent OBEs? The shortcut phase in which black people were allowed to be ordinary victims is over. Racism and its unavoidable at the time consequences are only to be part of our politics where they become useful in drawing exclusionary lines.

Modern politicians are content for violent crime to reappear as a matter of race. When it was mentioned that Tony Hardy had been chopping up women, nobody said that it could be an example of white on white crime. The stupidity of that saying might be made useful in the situation. It helps us to see that racial differences did not by any means created the solid base for the events in Birmingham and to appreciate that this sort of media coverage is a large part of what brings those differences to such vivid life. British cities had their own homegrown traditions of violent gangster Dom long before the situation arose. So Solid Crew showed up to trigger the latest moral panic.

The moderate invention of that element in British life trickled down the years between Bill Sykes and Get Carter, and we get what we get in todays life. The artistic Brighton opens the door for the diminishing fare recently served up by Vince Jones and Guy Ritchie. Why doesn't anybody consider them as particular examples of the ongoing events? Considering the power of those images we need to suggest not only that we need a more complex map of our culture than the one which says that black music is made and consumed exclusively by black people, but also that it finds its fans among other nationalities. Do we have somebody that is brave enough to accept that those murderous boys with their guns are an entirely homegrown phenomenon and need to be considered as such?

Their selfishness appeared to them as a result of their learnings from Mrs. Thatcher, their ruthlessness, on the other hand comes from the games console, their studied ignorance comes from the media as a break, and their love of the bring-hardest life from the celebrity culture that has undeterred our civil society. It is only by seeing them, against the logic of all simplistic race talk that we will be able to escape from the impasse in which minorities are viewed as either alien devils or innocent local angels. The absence of choice shuts them out from ordinary life in which people are not just racial specimens but complex creatures trying hard to make something of themselves in the most difficult and restrictive world of circumstances that we have today.

His work is also conceptually rich, because of his personal writing style. I include the comment of his prospective friend and colleague Bryan Cheyette: Gilroy has always been a maverick. His books are difficult in both senses of the word -- hard to read (although always rewarding) and highly troublesome. Being a native Englishman, Gilroy received his Ph. D. from Birmingham University in 1986.

His previous outstanding experience includes researches on sociology as well as multiple lectures on black British culture. In There Aint No Black in the Union Jack, he demonstrates the outrageous complexity of racial politics in England today, providing an exploration of the relationships among race, class, and nation as they have evolved over the past twenty years. He highlights racist attitudes that transcend the left-right political divide. As an example of his writing style I decided to bring a piece of his writing into this research: The modern world-system responsible for the expansion of Europe and consequent dispersal of black slave laborers throughout Europe and the new world was from its inception an international operation The social structures and processes erected over the productive and distributive relations of this system centered on slavery and plantation society and were reproduced in a variety of different forms across the Americas Their contemporary residues, rendered more difficult to perceive by the recent migration of slave descendants into the centers of metropolitan civilization, also exhibit the tendency to transcend a narrowly national focus. Analysis of black politics must, therefore, if it is to be adequate, move beyond the field of inquiry designated by categories formed in the intersection of race and the nation state. To put it another way, national units are not the most appropriate basis for studying this history for the African Diasporas consciousness of itself has long been defined in and against constricting national boundaries. (Paul Gilroy, There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack. ) Questions of race and racism have come to occupy a central role in political debate in Britain in recent years.

At first glance definitions of the essence seemed straightforward. By this we could explain racism as the identification and utilization of racial differences as justification for discriminatory practices, and anti-racism was opposite explanation. Classical socialism was implicitly anti-racist, highlighting class position and pointing race to a problematic but super structural mystification for dividing the working class. More recently positions have become confused.

Anti-racism has become a designated sequence of affirmative actions to be realized by administrative means. Socialism has lost many of its 19 th century improvement assumptions of the superiority of some cultures to others. Its former belief in color-blind meritocracy has been taken up by conservatives (such as those around The Salisbury Review); instead of biological essence, cultural differences (such as family relations) are considered as being to blame for any lingering inequalities. In discussion, the race problem and the often interconnected one of the Inner Cities are the terms around which control over urban space are discussed.
