Thirty years ago being gay or lesbian, was much harder than it is today. You could not see a homosexual person on the street; your friends even if they were gay or lesbian would never tell you that. All you might find about the homosexual movement were the articles in the newspapers written about the gay pickets. Today the attitude towards homosexuals became more loyal. Being homosexual is not considered as something unacceptable and now the society is dealing even with the issue of legalization of same-sex marriage. It is very important question for homosexuals who strive to have equal rights with heterosexuals.
Still such a specific argument as social acceptance of homosexual marriages is important. Let us imagine that homosexual marriages would be permitted by the legislation. Definitely just after the amendment of such legislation, we can watch news on the television showing happy homosexual weddings. There is nothing wrong with it, but how would children perceive this fact?
They would be most likely to think that it is a normal procedure when man marries a man and woman marries a woman, which certainly is not. The information that man attracts to woman and opposite was firmly loaded into our minds from early childhood, therefore it is considered to be normal sexual orientation, and let us not forget that more than 90 percent of us are heterosexuals. But to the next generation it will not be such a strong belief about how the things really work, which may cause some problems in the future, such as increasing interest towards the person of the same sex, which is certainly against human nature. It can become possible that with the years to come the number of homosexuals will increase and this will not be good for a society as a whole, because the birth rates will be reducing.
I believe that children should know what is normal and what is not. I do not blame homosexuals just because they are homosexuals and just because they are minority. Simply, I believe that there is a world order that exists for thousands of years. We should look at the religious point of view on homosexuality to understand this. Christian churches criticize homosexuality.
Their beliefs are backed up with Bible, where it is written that God have destroyed the towns of Sodom and Gomorra for homosexual relationships of the population. There is actually no religion in the world that would support homosexual relationships. The basic reason for not approving such a kind of affiliation by any religion is for the means of reproduction. Homosexual intercourse will not result in a creation of new life (birth of a child). A heterosexual family in Christianity is strongly believed to be a basis of human relationship. Therefore, the church does not support establishment of a family, which will not consist of man and woman.
However, if to look at the issue from political of view it becomes evident that homosexuals have a right to marry. Article VI of the United States Constitution says, that there is no reason why the federal government or any state government would restrict the marriage of heterosexual couple. This marital right is the association of agreeable adults who want to commit their lives with each other, but the same-sex couples have just as much intimacy and need for marital privacy as heterosexual couples. Therefore, those laws allowing heterosexual, but not the homosexual couple to marry are discriminative against this fundamental right. Government should leave aside disapproval that may be held by a religion, because the major case against homosexual marriage is that majority is not used to it. Then we must decide what is more important for us; is it politics or religion?
I think what is important is the view of heterosexuals, who have own ethical norms and who want their children to have same ethical norms. Moreover, they are as well concerned about children that are growing up in homosexual family, because when a child matures he or she has to deal with different psychological traumas that could be caused by growing in gay family, even though if he or she has very loving and caring parents. I believe that homosexual families have a right to exist; however, they should not be allowed to adopt children, simply because together they cannot have a child. It is not their choice to be homosexual; however, since you are one you should have all the rights and freedoms a normal individual has. Homosexuals should have a right to marry, but since they cannot be biological parents, they should not be allowed to adopt children. I think that homosexual marriage is not a normal thing, but I truly agree on the right of homosexuals to create a family.
Why do I believe that homosexual marriage is not normal? I think probably because I am cautious about all the things that are strange and uncommon to me, just like other people are.
