In Japan, animation is like god. Animated characters have been on the top among Japanese films for more than a decade. In the beginning of 1994, animated TV programs reached their highest average viewer ratings of 16. 1 %. To compare it to the year 1993, it increased up to 9 %. This popularity of animated programs had gone fare beyond the borders of Japan. The countries animated exports headed top TV ratings in Asia as well as in Europe.

Just as a new hit appears, buyers from different countries are knocking on the producers' doors while the project is still not finished. In Spain, for example, animated programs total up to 22 hours per week, and more than half of them is produced in Japan. More over, half of the comic books in Spain are in Japanese. Though Japanese animation is known for its violence, this kind of program is not the most popular in Japan. Nowadays Japanese animation is considered to be much better than American cartoons for some specialists. And what is important, there is a larger number of them available on the market...

The creative source of Japanese animated characters takes its roots in the suburbs of Tokyo. There Ghibli is situated, a studio where all those characters are born. It is also a place where Hayao Miyazaki, the most famous animator, creates his films. He has been the most constantly successful film producer in Japan during the ' 90 s. This is due to his hard work and animated movies that go far beyond the norm.

But not only the extraordinary imagination of the director is the foundation of the success that Miyazaki's movies had gained throughout the world. It is due to his bright mind and ability to think as a businessman. There is no doubt that a good animated movie cant be produced without creativity and imagination. But two these and all other aspects that give ground to success must be organized proper. Without Miyazaki's leading and merchandising skills Ghibli would newer become a prosperous company like it is now. It takes about eighty thousand hand-drawn pictures to create an animated film.

There approximately 100 employees in Ghibli. Most of them are artists, whose hands make great deal of the work only. Miyazaki claims that interesting stories and attention to details provide success to their work. The problem is that Miyazaki himself never knows whether a new movie will be successful even if it is done professionally. He prefers to use some extra time and exertion to do better.

No matter how much effort and money was spent already. He used to tell his workers that movies they produce are high-risk, high quality, and high-cost. This not only drives responsibility, but also brings high return. One more aspect of Miyazaki's success is his professionalism. Also most of the work is done by hands, the techniques used are more technically proficient as compared to those in other countries.

In addition all the work is done in Ghibli and never sent overseas. It is less costly but not less professional! Having composed a team of specialists and bringing up new ones in his studios, Miyazaki does not save money while producing movies; he earns them by engaging highly qualified stuff. This kind of doing business also helps to correct mistakes and bring in some improvements quickly. To create the right ambience at Ghibli took a lot of efforts and hard work. "I have a speech I give to new employees.

I tell them not to worry about loving the company. That's not the object. I tell them to love their work; to love themselves; to work here three or four years and then be off to do something more exciting- Miyazaki says. He also does great work by motivating his employees grow professionally Who knows if the next film might be the death of our company?

It might fail at the box office. If the company goes down, the people still have to eat. So you should be worried more about improving your skills too. One of the Miyazaki's techniques that brought him success is that he always tries to do things better. That is why he takes up challenges and is ahead his business. Though animation is probably the funniest industry, it is also the hot one now.

To survive in it one must always look forward for improvement and innovation. The main product of Ghibli is animated movies. Though TV programs are at their high now, low prices prevent Miyazaki form producing them. It is obvious that low cost production is not the strategy for him. It for sure will bring down the quality of the product. And Miyazaki's aim is on the contrary to produce the best animated movies ever.

The Ideal he is striving is production of films anyone can watch, films that bring pleasure and refreshment. The benefit Miyazaki has over foreign directors is that he has an absolute freedom in making decisions. It is very important that he has no restrictions on changing his plans, innovating, implementing and controlling the entire process of wok. But he did things exactly as he'd been doing them for the past 20 years. His means didn't change at all as well as his views.

Miyazaki explains, that when he had just made a decision to become an animator, he decided never to copy anyone and try to invent something new every time. And he really kept his word. His characters are easily recognizable among thousands of others. If talking more precisely on Miyazaki's business success his objectives are worthy mentioning. One of them is to make money while doing what you like. It seems that he succeeded in this principle well.

One more important issue is understanding of movie making specifics form economic stand point. The reason is that it's going to cost you more than for example 700 million in production costs. That is enough only to cover the costs of getting the film ready and printing negative on hand. The next step is to distribute and advertise you project. By the time you " ve done it the costs incurred are about 1. l to 1. 2 billion.

The sum gets even greater as you put movie into the theaters. Thus risk you take producing the film is very high and you may fail all the work any time something goes wrong. In fact, any little mistake can spoil all the work. Theaters aren't the only source of income for a feature movie. Money also flow from broadcast rights and video sales and rentals. And for many animated cartoons, there are profitable product merchandising deals.

Miyazaki's characters now appear on everything from lunch boxes to T-shirts. They are sold all over the world and thanks to their popularity bring a lot of money to the company. These funds are vital to the production of new films and creating new characters as far as it takes a long time for the movie to appear on the screen. And until it makes money, it demands the investment that may occur a failure. The Studio Ghibli museum, which was opened lately, is an additional source of making money and increasing popularity of animated movies. It is a place where visitors can see the process of creating animated movies in the studio.

Some short films created especially for the museum will be shown. There is no international market in the country as for example in the United States. And the price for Hollywood movies is rather high for Japan market. Though when tried to establish similar conditions for his films in the United States market, they decided him to be crazy.

They wanted to bye all the rights for rather little fee compared to those they charge for their films. That is why Miyazaki did not sell his movies to the United States. His work is not worse than American movies, so why should it cost less? Some consider that low price polices that Japanese animation choose is one cause of their popularity. The average animated feature costs approximately one-third of the resembling one made in the United States. Such pricing policy is partially due to the opinion that Japanese market takes care of costs.

This way businessmen consider foreign markets sales to be only additional to the domestic ones. This polices also give some benefits to filmmakers. Charging low artists work provides a low production cost that also minimizes risk for investors. Though Miyazaki makes his films only for Japan, he understands the business he's in.

Like in any other there is supply and demand. And the army of those who are ready to pay money for Japanese movies is constantly growing. This means that the bigger companies oust smaller ones. That is why he never stops and tries to invent something new and interesting, something the customers are looking for.
