Social workers are trained to practice on a number of settings. They can do casework, group work, or work with communities (Zastrow, 2000). When a social work major has graduated from college, they will have the generalist skills to practice with either one of those methods. If a person would like to practice in the rehabilitative services with substance abuse, they may think about what level they are interested in.

A rehabilitative social worker dealing with individuals who have suffered from substance abuse may think about practicing at the mid level, because in some cases it may be easier for the individual to interact with people in the same predicament. The department of rehabilitative services is designed to meet the needs of people that are incapable of meeting their basic needs. Depending on the individuals needs, interests, and capabilities, the department of rehabilitative services can provide an individual with a number of services that can help that individual meet their needs. The services include vocational counseling, vocation evaluation, job development, and job placement (Zastrow, 2000). Rehabilitative services can assist individuals with disabilities, and they can provide the necessary skills for the individual to become independent. A person that wants to go into the field of being a rehabilitative social worker may want to treat individuals in a group with vocational counseling (Lee, 1998).

The counseling services include individual, group, parent, and vocational guidance (Zastrow, 2000). The worker may consider working with small groups who have similar problems. The group counseling focuses on peer interaction and development of social skills. The worker is just there to facilitate the group, and the individuals in need help each other (Lee, 1998).

The individuals or groups served by rehabilitative services are individuals that have suffered from substance abuse, or individuals with long mental illnesses (Lee, 2001). With these two categories a rehabilitative social worker can conduct small group counseling in a practical and efficient manner. Within a small group, the counselors may be able to help each other get through the situation. The education needed to practice in this field is a minimum of a Bachelors degree, and a maximum of a Doctorates degree. With a BSW, a social worker will have a salary that ranges from $ 15, 000 up to $ 29, 999 a year. A social worker may possibly make a minimum of $ 50, 000 a year with the Doctorates degree.

When obtaining a Masters degree, and the maximum amount of up to $ 49, 000 a year (Ginsberg, 2001). While one can go into the field of a rehabilitative social worker with any one of the degrees listed, it is always better to further your education to have more knowledge about your field of practice. In conclusion, being a rehabilitative social worker plays a major part in society. There are many ways to rehabilitate someone, but it is not easy. Using interaction within groups should make it somewhat easier for the individuals to manage the problem knowing that they are not alone. It may take some time, but group work is helpful for helping individuals relate jointly.

Social and economic justice occurs when "all members of a society share equally in the social order, secure an equitable consideration of resources and opportunities, and enjoy their full benefit of civil liberties" (DuBois & Krogsrud Miley, 1996; p. 15). An easier way to understand the concept of social and economic justice may be to consider what is a lack of justice: "when societies do not accord citizens equity and equality and when they violate their citizens' human and civil rights" (DuBois & Krogsrud Miley, 1996; p. 16). Social injustice could include any social problem-domestic violence, inadequate healthcare, or substance abuse. Social justice ideally addresses these problems, but also addresses social issues-the increasing aging population, education expenses, and environmental concerns.

Social workers' responsibility regarding social and economic justice is formally defined in the NASW Code of Ethics (May 1988 version). The last section of the Code of Ethics, "the social worker's ethical responsibility to society, " states that "[t]he social worker should promote the general welfare of society. " More specifically, it states "[t]he social worker should advocate changes in policy and legislation to improve social conditions and to promote social justice. " It is clear then that social workers are obligated to promote social justice - to empower people individually and collectively. This stipulation is congruent with my own personal beliefs about social justice. Influenced by my values based in Christianity and humanism (yes, two philosophies that contradict each other), I feel action to promote social justice is a personal responsibility. In the past, I have taken limited action in the areas of abortion, political prisoners, environmental issues, and pornography. My undergraduate education in social work has introduced me to the injustices against persons who are elderly, are of an AHANA group (African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American), or are of a non-heterosexual orientation.

Not only have I been introduced to these injustices, but I have also been taught about their roots and what allows them to continue. Though I have been (and will be) taught the importance of the promotion of social justice through my social work education, the teaching of how to promote social justice has been limited. Beyond the advice of writing a letter in some classes, education in these classes on how to combat social injustice has been non-existent. In most classes, it seems to be given a secondary importance or is treated as an afterthought.
