... ten to death by the sled driver. He was a character that Buck admired and the first character that he considered friend. The setting of the story takes place in multiple environments.

The story begins on a plantation where Buck was a pampered member of the Miller family in California. The story then changes scenery along with the relocation of Buck. There is a scene in a baggage car on a train, and a scene on a ship where Buck begins to learn the valuable lessons needed for survival in the wild. The rest of the story takes place along the Yukon where Buck worked as a sled dog, and where he calls home as a wild savage when his sled career is over. The theme of Jack London's The Call of the Wild is not necessarily a moral lesson to be learned by man. Rather it is a twisted interpretation of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

The story places the pampered dog, Buck, descending the evolutionary ladder to a savage wolf like creature. The story merely takes the reader through Bucks life showing the gradual decent. Like many of London's works he based his stories on current philosophical topics that the world faced in that particular era. The story begins with a description of a great and powerful dog named Buck that is the pride of the Miller estate.

One night a workman, a trusted man to Buck, took him and sold him as a prospective sled dog for the primary use of gold searching in the Klondike. He was transported by both boat and train to Alaska, all the while being mistreated. He was sold to two French Canadians, that were fair to him but demanding. Buck was forced to learn a new life, one that demanded savage behavior and a strong will for survival.

It was here where he found his one true enemy, a true wolf-like savage named Spitz. Buck being an intelligent and quick learner, quickly learned the way of life for a sled dog. As well as learning savage techniques necessary for survival. Buck's muscles grew firm and his senses sharp. He grew bold; bold enough to take on A Spitz in a fight. He won, both the pride and also the lead position on the sled.

The team traveled some three thousand miles with out animate rest and were exhausted. They were finally granted the long needed rest, however were sold to an anxious group that ended the expected months long rest after two days. Vary inexperienced, the new sled drivers pushed the exhausted, near death dogs on. Some to their death and others even closer to it. The dogs were over worked and under fed. Finally Buck, still the undisputed leader of the team, refused to go on further.

The drivers were beaten vary badly, but the pain and numbness of his body due to travel took the pain of his beating away. A man named John Thornton intervened on the beating and saved Buck's life. This man was Buck's first real friend. Buck was granted the rest he deserved.

Once again after many days of rest he regained his strength and was once again the powerful presence of before. He even won an impossible test of strength for his new found friend, John Thornton. His acute savage senses returned and was able to hunt and kill prey that was many times his size. As Buck returned from hunting one day he found his master / friend full of arrows dead. He would for ever more be on his on, wild, only to return to the place of his fallen friend once and a while to honor him. Buck would live forever more as a myth and a legend of the Indian population.

Jack London had a wrote vary passionately and prolific about the unanswered questions of life, death, and "The struggle to survive with dignity and integrity" (internet). He was able to tie these issues into stories based on his experiance's at sea, in Alaska or in California. He was generally a fun loving and playful person whom was always quick to take "side with the underdog against injustice or oppression of any kind" (internet). He was courageous, full of laughter, eloquent, hard working, and always eager for adventure (internet). Jan London was "one of the most attractive, romantic figures of his time" (internet). "London clearly sympathized with his superheroes, yet he seemed to see no hope for their integration into society unless it be through heart-humbling love. " (Magill 1146) In nearly all of his writings "London set forth a viewpoint that would not recommend him to a large audience" (Magill 1146). "His writings appealed to not few, but millions around the world" (internet). "Several of the books and many of the short stories are classics of their kind, well thought in critical terms and still popular around the world" (internet). The Call of the Wild was Jack London's first real success.

By representing Darwinism and literary naturalism London made his novel a twisted play on the theory of evolution. London did not use the popular view of apes descending from man. "Instead he describes a dog making such a decent. " (Magill 1147) London describes a pampered domestic dog transformed into an arctic wolf on account of his environment and life style. London, like other writers discussing the issues of evolution, had racial qualities play part in the individuals personality. This is illustrated in a quote from the book, "His cunning was wolf cunning... his intelligence, shepherd intelligence and St. Bernard intelligence. " (London) "London's unusual subject allows him to see virtues in return to an aboriginal state that could not be found if humans were the subject. " (Magill 1148) He also uses the literary element of contrast to bring effect to his novel.

For instance when "Buck is at his most savage he is also most completely fulfilling his potential utilizing his brain, muscles, and heart to the utmost. " (Magill 1148) Jack London had a life full of ups and downs. He used ideas of philosophy that affected the world to inspire all of his writings as well as the ideas of his own experiences and of the great adventures celebrated in the age of time. He used ideas of Charles Darwin, racial hierarchy, and the American Credo of success to inspire his writings. Once he tried to make it to Alaska himself, so he was able to use some of what he experienced to add realistic adventure to his stories. All elements of his life and his era helped make him one of the greatest adventure writers of the generations.
