myself out of the car in awe of the great building and left my mother and younger brother sitting in the car. The old church had definitely out lived its glory days, yet it still had an airy charm to it. The roughness of the wood and gently flaking paint only added to it's timelessness; however, the one attribute that caught my eye was the sad old stained glass windows, which were slowly making their descent to the cold harsh ground. At one time they had once outlined the most beautiful scenery in town. They struck images of medieval knights slowly falling to their deaths from a blow by a giant dragon which had already drained the magnificence out of their brilliantly lustering bodies. Emerging from my daydream, I pulled myself out of the lure of the ancient building and surveyed the rest of the scenery.

Parked before the entrance of this, there were more than 1, 000 horses. No, not the type that gallop wild on the open parries, but the kind that is harnessed by cold uniting steal and reigns supreme on the lawless highways of America. At least fifteen Harley Davidson's were standing at attention waiting for their masters to mount them and call their supreme powers to work. The contrast of raw young American power to the silent loom of the church was awing. As we approached the doors, I gazed at the wind chapped faces of the bikers. In the old eyes, I could see the wisdom of their years and the hardships in their lives.

I felt for them because they seemed like the building, worn and wise, yet still searching for something to save them. I learned later on that many of the older members were in fact looking for a savior. In their younger days many had been members of the Hell's Angels, a rotten to the core, kill you just the same as look at you gang. In the young bikers' eyes a fire could be seen in their souls, a dedication to their lifestyle and to their church. I also noted the attire for the church service was not dressy, but classic dull black leather. On the back of the dusty leather jackets was proudly worn the symbol of their dedication to Christianity, "Soldiers Of Christ. " As I stepped through the entrance of the church, I was hit with a musty smell that rushed into my nostrils and suffocated me with its essence.

The church was dimly lit and chillingly cold. Around the walls of the worship room pews were set and in the center of the room were metal folding chairs arranged in rows. Positioned in the foreground, a stage had been setup for a band. I could only wonder at what they would be playing, because my church has only an organ and a piano, both of which are used in the singing of hymns. In every corner of the worship room, there were murals of memorable biblical scenes. These paintings were a vain attempt at bringing the room alive with color; however, these worshipers had placed their hearts into the mediocre paintings, and the very essence of the painting reached down and touched the darkest parts of my soul.

I drew my gaze away from the colorful murals on the wall and briefly scanned the room. There were many bikers dressed in leather, but a few were not bikers at all. These people varied in social class, but they all seemed to be searching for something missing and unnamed in their lives. Some were outfitted in sweat suits and baseball caps while others wore Tommy clothes and were drinking beverages. I was astonished to see that people dressed so shoddily for church. I am use to seeing suits and nice dresses.

While it was different, I must admit that it was a more comfortable atmosphere than in my church. They were more relaxed and took a laid back approach to worship. After I had taken in the flavor of the room, I realized that it had become quite crowded with people. My mother, brother, and I were obviously visitors; so, many of the regular church members introduced themselves to us.

I am a timid person, and complete strangers talking to me somehow made me feel uneasy. When the pastor approached us, I mustered up the strength to explain to him we were visiting because of a school assignment that I had, to visit a church with different beliefs than my own and compare and contrast the churches. The pastor offered to talk with us, and during a brief discussion he explained to me that the church was "interdenominational. " He went on to say, "It doesn't matter what denomination you belong to. It's only your belief in Jesus Christ that's important. " He then excused himself and began the service. For the first hour the band played, and for the second hour the pastor preached.

All of the members of the band were in the congregation. They were surprisingly good. By playing songs that they had rewritten from hard rock songs and converted them into religious ones, they kept the congregation on its feet. The whole congregation scared me because of the intensity that the music brought out in them. Then my mom began to sing loudly, and people were staring at us. She did not hush and just kept on singing.

My face had turned so red my brother thought that I was choking. I lived through the song, keeping myself occupied by scribbling imaginary notes and not looking up. I could not help but think everyone in the church was talking about how "those people" meaning us, could be so flagrant as to invade their s...
