Domestic violence is not always about a struggle for power, however it is the most common answer to the question why. What is being done to stop these events from happening again? All over the country people are becoming more aware of the severity of these events and are being educated to see the signs of these events happening around them. Throughout the country more support sources are becoming available so that victims of this abuse can go and talk to others like themselves and get through the situation without fear and hopefully without anymore harm befalling them.
Group help is just one answer to a growing problem. Sports bring about aggression and many individuals fail to understand that there is a time and a place for aggression. ACT 2 In Madison Wisconsin, University Officials are trying to over come the reputation of "Rabid Badger Fans." Rivals of the Badger's fans call them "Crude, Disgusting." Officials are saying "We " re concerned about the chants, the extreme use of profanity, the use of offensive language in a vocal, loud and unavoidable way, " (Luoluo Hong, Dean of Students at the University of Wisconsin). After one of the games at the UW stadium an opposing fan complained that he and his son were knocked down, beer poured on them, and bottles thrown at them. A Student at UW has stated, "I think that there are some individuals that are out of control. " (Junior Jennifer Scott). Events like this are not uncommon at college and university campuses across the country.
Fans have adopted a certain thought process that if an opposing team or opposing fans come to "their house" they will do what ever they feel will help their team to win and if that means that they have to beat one of the fans from the opposing team then it will be done. Why do these events occur? Being a fan has become more than watching and supporting your team from the privacy of your room to being in a way part of the team. If your team goes on a winning streak then your game day routine does not change and the one day that you change something and your team looses then it is your fault. If fan is taunting your team then it is a direct attack on you and it become necessary for you to do everything you can to stop them from disrespecting your team. Thoughts like these are causing these events that bring shame to the institutions of these teams.
What is being done to stop these events from happening again? University officials are making attempts to clean up the reputation of their fans. They are working with the fans to limit the profanity and use of obscene language, as well as put a stop to the violence that occurs to the opposing fans. For the most part the task of cleaning up the atmosphere at sporting events fall upon the shoulders of the fans themselves. It is however the job of the institutions to make an effort to teach their fans what is a reasonable way to act at their sporting events. This is true not only for college sports but also for high schools, youth leagues and most of all, professional sports.
ACT 3 One of the most recent incidents among fans reacting to a sporting event involves the Boston Red Sox beating the New York Yankees. After the series winning game, the Red Sox fans crowded the streets around Fenway Park where everything was going fine until the fans began to riot. The fans began tipping over cars and starting fires. There were fans being beaten in the streets by other fans. During all of this the police took to the streets in order to stop the riot from causing any more damage. While the police were attempting to disperse the crowd one of the officers that was using a tear gas gun fired a shot into the crowd hitting a twenty-one year old woman in the eye.
The young lady died later that night. The most disturbing part of this event is that she was not even participating in any of the acts of the riot; she was standing on the side of the street simply observing what was happening. This woman was not the only person that has harmed in this incident, fifteen other people including a police officer also suffered minor injuries. After the young woman was taken to the hospital a police officer that was at the scene claimed that he saw men become enraged even more then they already were. He claimed that the men ripped small trees and street signs out of the ground and began to attack the horse-mounted police. He was quoted as saying "We had to fight to get control. " The projectile that was fired into the crowd was designed to be used as a "non-lethal projectile." The tear gas gun was designed to be fired in front of a crowd on the ground were it would deploy the gas upon contact.
Other acts that occurred that night included a large number of people attempting to climb the Green Monster; one of the people attempting to climb the wall claimed he was hit by a shot fired by the Boston Police. As well as fifteen people at Plymouth State College were arrested for disorderly conduct. Why did this event occur? This event happened purely because of mob mentality.
What started off as a celebration of a great victory by the Boston Red Sox became a riot that ended the life of an innocent young woman; it caused harm to the people involved and brought shame to one of the greatest cities in the country. What most often starts off as one person making a bad decision can cause a snowball like effect and turn into an entire collection of people making bad decisions. Regarding the attack on the police, people are always looking for a reason to find fault with authority; when an officer makes a mistake that results in an innocent bystander being hurt, people are likely to try to take matters into their own hands and rebel against authority. This chaos draws its fire from the original thought that people are willing to follow the lead of one individual even if that lean is in the wrong direction. It was a horrible event, the death of this young woman, however, it is important to see that when authority is challenged they will retaliate in order to prevent others from being hurt and to return order to the city. What is being done to stop these events from happening again?
After this event the police commissioner of Boston Kathleen O'Toole and the Mayor of Boston Tom Menino held a press conference to go over the events of the celebration of Boston fans. While they felt remorse and took full responsibility for the poor action of the Boston Police Department, they also stated that they were going to take action against the "punks... who turned our city's victory into an opportunity for violence and mindless destruction. " (Police Commissioner Kathleen O'Toole). Mayer Menino has taken it upon himself to try to prevent these actions from happening in the future. Menino asked that colleges take action in expelling students that were found guilty of committing crimes in the riot that happened after the Red Sox win. Menino took time the Friday after the event to talk to bar, restaurant and nightclub owners to speak about "invoking a state law, never before used in Boston, that would allow him to ban the sale or distribution of alcohol 'in cases of riot or great public excitement. '" (web).
Although he did not invoke this state law, the threat itself may have been just enough to put everyone on notice that this type of behavior would not be tolerated during the World Series that was up coming. Mob mentality is something that has plagued mankind as long as we have existed; putting a stop to this may never be completely possible, however, it is possible to cut down on the number of times that it happens by making examples of people when it does occur. Personal opinion on Criminal Acts in Sport Given all of the examples of the events above and the numerous other events that happen on a daily basis it is clear to me that this is a major topic of concern. The number of people related to the sports world feeling that the laws of the world do not apply when sports are involved is growing immensely. This fact alone alarms me; for as long as I can remember sports are games that are played for fun. The criminal acts that come form sports means that someone is no longer having fun.
All sports are games and games are meant to be fun and enjoyable and as long as people remember this the number of criminal acts will be cut down tremendously. Ending all case of criminal activity in sports is an unreachable dream; nevertheless, it is important to always reach for your dreams. There is an old clich'e that says if you reach for the stars you will at least end up on the moon. How true it is, for as long as we strive to end all criminal violence in sports, we will at least be able to stop most of he criminal violence, violence that is hurting the sport world and the people who love sports.
