Ultimately, the FCC wants to keep analog lines available for first responder organizations through out the country. Future Products One future trend that is being developed and is not that far off is interactive TV. Interactive TV is made possible through HDTV, and can be used to do any task that is currently done with a computer. In 1999 HDTV was tested using the internet 2 network. A group of testers successfully sent a HDTV stream from Stanford University to the University of Washington at 40 Mbps. Today a company called SBC Communications is going to accelerate their installation of fiber optics. This will be a new network that will be capable of sending super high-speed data, video and voice services. According to SBC Communications, they will make it possible for 18 million house holds to receive HDTV over IP capability. They are calling it Project Lightspeed.
With Project Lightspeed, the company will run 38, 800 miles of fiber. The project will cost between $ 4 to $ 6 billion. The HDTV industry is booming and all technologies are being upgraded or further developed. Each production and broadcasting office within CBN will need a retrofit of the gigabit LAN and provided with new high definition recording and editing equipment. The CBN WAN will need to provide a dedicated fiber-optic connection to each CBN location; facilitating high speed transfers without the need for compression. The programming providers (i. e.
Direct TV, Comcast, DISH Networks, etc. ) will need the facilities to receive and broadcast the HD signal. This issue has been depreciated since many broadcasting corporations are starting to provide HDTV. Regulatory Issues In the process of converting the current analog television broadcasting system to digital, there have been several regulatory issues that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has had to resolve in order for the conversion process to proceed in a timely fashion in route to its December 31, 2006 deadline. Some of these issues include the following: "Dual Carriage" and Multicast Requirement The "dual carriage" and multicast requirement was an attempt to require cable operators to carry broadcaster's analog and digital signals simultaneously and to carry more than one programming stream of a digital television station. This requirement has been found to be unnecessary and declined by the FCC. "Must Carry" Requirement According to an article ("Washington Watch", 2005), found at web no cable or satellite providers carry free over-the air digital programming, which is digital signal transmitted by local television stations.

Global Implications While the conversion from analog broadcasting to HDTV is underway not only in the United States but throughout the world, there have been some concerns and implications concerning the conversion. Some of these concerns and implications are: Technology All broadcasting stations, television networks, local television stations, and cable and satellite providers will have to change all of their equipment. As the level of technology varies throughout the world, is the technology needed for the conversion, broadcasting, and transmission of the data signal available? Data Size and Bandwidth The digital signal is very large in size and therefore requires a lot of bandwidth to transfer it.
This could affect the overall speed and performance of both the Internet and our LANs and WANs. The increased consumption of bandwidth could slow them down considerably. In the case of twisted pair cabling and other slower medium, the data will have to be compressed. The constant compression and decompression of the data could have an affect on its integrity. Cost and Fees All of the current analog televisions will have to be replaced with an HDTV ready television with a built-in HDTV receiver, or a separate set-top-box will need to be purchased in order for the analog television to be able to receive the digital signal. The cost of a new television or the set-top-box could be expensive, and there could be other monthly fees involved in receiving digital programming, depending on the provider.
The HDTV Advantage The implementation of a pure HDTV network will position Century Broadcasting Network to be a quality contender in the home entertainment industry. With high definition the growth potential of the types of programming CBN can provide will be greatly expanded. Cbn's existing and new consumers will experience quality programming regardless if they are viewing shows in analog or high definition. While the implementation of a HD network will initially be costly, the benefits of the technology will quickly provide a return on the investment and ultimately allow CBN the ability to reach new growth and better quality programming.
