The journey Hsun Ching would embark on began as nothing more than weight on his shoulders. Little did he know, it would be an expedition that would change his life forever. Not only changing his perspective on the world, but also life, his personality, and character. All the risks and sacrifices that Hsun Ching has to make during his journey are a very small price to pay for the positive benefits on his life. The journey not only revolutionizes his outlook on the world and life, but also on the Sutra and what it truly means to the world. Before Hsun Ching embarks on his journey he has nothing but negative feelings toward the expedition.
He sees it as a complete and total waste of his time and doesn't see the way the journey will revolutionize his life. The beginning of the novel depicts Hsun Ching as a man who does not go back on his word, and always follows through on what he says he is going to do. Throughout the beginning of the novel Hsun Ching makes his views on the sutra perfectly clear stating that the sutra is nothing more than a waste of time and is not real what so ever. At about the half way mark into the journey Hsun Ching begins to enjoy all the natural beauty that the states has to offer. He meets people along the journey that change his life forever and mold his personality into a very positive form. The journey would forever change Hsun Ching's outlook on life and his personality for the better.
Before the journey started Hsun Ching could be described as quite a bitter and unforgiving man who didn't care that much for the well being of others. The journey taught him to forgive others for the mistakes and to give strangers a chance. Hsun Ching was never one to take a stranger in and become friends with him. They transformed him from a bitter and cold person into a loving and compassionate human being.
