As I started to think about what aspect of terrorism I wanted to write a paper on, it occurred to me that I didn't really know much about the Taliban group. Which is one of the major terrorist groups in today's society. So I am going to try and explain this group the best that I can. In couple different aspects, one is what their rules are, two how they treat women, and three what types of terrorist acts they have committed. The Taliban group is a group of men who formed in 1994 in the country of Kandahar by Islamic students who took a radical approach to interpreting Islam. The Group also believes in strict Islamic rules.

According to them the men must have beards four fingers in length, there shall be no music, Nintendo, and women should not be allowed to do anything other than stay home and watch the children and clean the house. This Taliban group when first started had about twenty to thirty thousand men involved. The group now controls about 80 % or two thirds of Afghanistan land. Prior to the war no one other than the NMA (Northern Military Alliance) has really put up a fight or even thought about taking down the Taliban. The only thing that has challenged the Taliban group is the Northern Military Alliance and the only positive gain they have had was to keep their one-third part of Afghanistan. The only thing left to do for the Afghan people is either to give in to the dominating Taliban group or turn to the NMA and help get their country back to the pre-Communist era that it was before the Taliban group took over.

Taliban beliefs are strict and to the point. If you get caught committing a crime you are likely to get the extreme punishment for your crime. The Taliban is not afraid to show off their force when dealing with people that commit crimes. The Taliban regime has turned soccer stadiums into viewing grounds of executions.

Men are running around the stadium with amputated hands as others cheer. The Taliban regime is not to be reckoned with. If a woman is out with out her veil her home will be marked and her husband will face punishment. The regime believes that a man must have a long beard and may not have his hair beatle-ly or he will have his head shaved along with being arrested.

The Taliban has some of the most frightening rules for Afghan people: A kite seller will be imprisoned for three days, the owner of a house will be punished if women are heard singing during a wedding, no images or photographs are to be posted in public places, there is to be no equipment that produces the joy of music, and even Christmas cards are to be banned. The list goes on and on with the harsh rules and punishment that face the people of Afghanistan. The Taliban claims that they are following the strict codes of Islam, but now it seems that the group is just dictating the country to whatever they seem suitable. The Taliban customs personal would gouge out the images of women's eyes on shampoo bottles, and merchants would have to sell the product with black tape over the women image or face a beating and time in jail. The group of men that run the Taliban regime amaze me on how everything is played out in Afghanistan. The men want a bid into the U.

N. but can't even have a country where people aren't afraid to walk down the streets in fear of being stoned or shot to death. The second aspect of the regime that really amazed me was how the women are treated under the Taliban rule. Every woman must wear a burqa veil no matter where she is going. If a woman is found outside of her house with out her veil on she can be whipped or even stoned to death publicly. "A woman named Sohaila was found walking on the streets with another man who was not a relative, a sufficient crime for her to be found guilty of adultery. Since she was single the punishment was 100 lashings in front of a crowded stadium.

If the poor girl would have been married she would have been stoned to death publicly" (Goodwin, Jan. Buried Alive. "On the Issues. " Summer ' 98 Vol. 7, No. 3 / web page: 7 - 2 - 98). Afghan women have been pushed to the lowest form of living there is. The Taliban men have completely banned any education for women starting from kindergarten to graduate school. Also employment for women has been banned in their country. The poor women under the Taliban rule can't wear make-up, nail polish, cut their hair short, wear colorful or stylish clothes, white socks and shoes, and can't even walk or talk loudly.

In fact the government believes women shouldn't even leave their homes at all: " Women, you should not step outside your residence, " reads one of the Taliban dictates. If woman do choose to leave her home it must be for an essential, government sanctioned purpose and she must wear the full burqa outfit. Even then these suppressed women risk their lives. Women born into this horrible lifestyle are born already dead.

To ensure that women are not to be seen regularly as if the never existed the government ordered that all home exterior windows be covered with thick blankets. It is very illegal for women to talk to a man if he is not a close relative. The women in Afghanistan aren't even able to see a male physician no matter what their conditions are. A curfew of 7: 30 pm is set and nobody can be out except for Taliban troops, not even a woman in labor or extremely sick woman can be helped and has to wait until morning for a doctor's care. During the war against the Soviet Union Afghan women were the income that held their families together when men were injured, dead, or missing. Now that the Taliban has taken over, women are banned from working.

Women used to hold jobs next to men in medicine, engineering, architecture, and law. Women used to hold 70 percent of teaching jobs, 50 percent of the civil servants and university students, and 40 percent of the doctors before the law was passed by the strict Taliban government banning women from working altogether. " There are only two places where for Afghan women- in her husband's house, and in the graveyard. " Another Taliban dictator. Women struggle for life in this demented country. An Afghan woman will go two or three days with only eating once so she can keep her baby alive. Women also have to share burqas because they are marked so high not all women in Afghanistan can afford them. Some women that share burqas have to stay inside for days at a time so they won't be killed for not being properly clothed.

Women in this country are extremely suppressed and face a very rough life. The Taliban regime is known to hate America and everything we stand for. The terrorist group has made many attempts to try and sabotage an American embassy and American landmarks. One thing the regime tried to destroy was an embassy in Kenya.

On August 7 th 1998 the bombing of the embassy in Kenya, which killed 224 people and wounded another 5, 000 is one of the terrorist attacks by the Taliban, and Osama Bin laden, this man has a vengeance against the United States of America. Osama bin laden has started up a few terrorist training camps through the Taliban regime to help him get his way and destroy anything that America has to do with Afghanistan or anywhere in the Middle East. Bin Laden has tried many terrorist attacks on America, including the terrorist attack he financed on the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia on June 21 st, 2001. This incident left 19 people dead and hundreds injured, but his most successful attack was the planning and accomplished act on the World Trade Centers. This huge tragedy had a great impact on America.

The man financed and had people trained on how to fly huge planes if need to get the job done. The attack was extremely successful in the eyes of the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. He helped finance and train the men to come over and put America at a very vulnerable stage. His success with bombing the World Trade Center and the Pentagon really boosted the confidence of the Taliban and all of their followers. The one fact that Osama Bin Laden and the whole Taliban regime didn't know is that even though they dropped us (America) to our knees, our nation rose up again as a stronger more unified country.

Communities small and large have come together to donate time, money and support to help the men and women who lost their lives in this tragedy. With Bin Laden's desperate attempt to tare our nation apart he has united a world that is taking a stand together against terrorism that will ultimately lead to the Taliban and Bin Laden destruction.
