... ly I called the doctor and he ordered a series of test by the audiologist on the 3 rd floor. The tests were immediately performed and to make along story short, He was Deaf. Dr Simon began to interpret the results of the tests. She said he had a sensori-neural deafness. This is the result of problems with the cochlea (the sensory part) or the auditory nerve (the neural part).
About 90 % of all hearing loss is sensori-neural. In most cases of sensori-neural deafness the hairs in the cochlea are damaged and do not pass messages to the auditory nerve. Dr. Simon that the hearing loss could have been caused by the high fever or the medication.

What have I done to deserve this? I was hysterical and told Dr Simon can you fix it? Put some hearing aids to make him hear again. Hearing loss is ranked mild (slight difficulty hearing in daily environment), moderate (difficult to hear most sounds in your daily environment), severe (extremely difficult to hear all sounds in daily life) or profound (deaf). My Jerry fell in the severe to profound degree. I remember almost fainting. Dr. Simon had her assistant take Jerry to play in another room while she talked to me. Dr Simon was very sweet and helpful.
She waited until I composed myself and talked to me about our options. She explained that he would qualify for disability services and where I should go to apply. She also informed me about the school system and what he was entitled to receive due to his newly acquired disability. She explained the Individuals with Disabilities Act.
Dr. Simon also explained to me that Jerry would have to learn new method of communication. Jerry could still talk but he would have to learn sign language to communicate effectively, and recommended that I learn it also. She told me about groups of parents and family member who are going through the same thing we were. Dr. Simon assured me that we were not alone.
The most important thing she did was make me feel like we were going to make it through this. Dr. Simon told me she would put a packet of information together with everything she could think of that we would need from support groups to therapies to special school accommodations. The best part was that she offered to bring it over to the house that night once we left the hospital. After all that information Dr. Simon gave me, I was overwhelmed.

Once there, Jerry started asking questions. Mommy, why cant I hear you anymore? When will I be able to hear you? , I felt my eyes filling with tears and wanting to break down. I took a deep breath while Dr. Simon held my hand and tried to explain to my baby that he would probably never hear again.
We talked slowly facing him and even wrote things down for him to read. After a while of trying to communicate with him I saw that look in his eyes. Jerry's eyes filled with tears and he screamed, you are lying, why are you lying to me? Mommy I cant hear you! I remember grabbing him so tightly and hugging him as our tears made a puddle on the floor. After a couple of minutes we both composed ourselves.
I looked him in the eyes and said as I wrote down on a paper Have I ever lied to you before? He slowly tried to read my lips and the note. He said no. I told him I will never lie to you baby.
I love you very much and we will get through this together. After breaking the news to Jerry, we went home. I kept hoping that when I talked to him in the car he would have heard me and that it was all a mistake. However, that never happened. The next couple of days I spent researching and applying for the different types of services that was offered for the deaf.
I applied for disability as Dr. Simon had suggested. Jerry and I enrolled in sign language classes. We both began to see a psychologist. We went to hearing impaired and deaf groups to help us cope. I bought a TDD machine for the telephone incase of an emergency Jerry so could also use the telephone.
As far as his school is concerned they were great. Jerry has an interpreter, a tutor, a therapist and an extra sign language class. My biggest fear was that Jerry was going to have to change schools because he would not fit in. I also was afraid of his grades. How would he understand now? However, after a couple of days in the sign language classes he seemed to pick it up fast.
He is such a fighter like his father. I just pray to have the strength to be brave like him. April 14, 2002 Dear Journal I just wanted to let you know that it has been three month since the day my son became deaf. Happy to say, that our lives are headed in the right way. I am no longer on any medication for my depression and anxiety. We continue to go to the hearing impaired groups.
As for Jerry, well, he is the reason I was able to deal with this so well. He has been such a positive and mature person. I sometimes wonder if he is really six years old. His grades are better than ever before. I even think he has more friends now (the deaf ones and the hearing ones).
He is completely fluent in sign language. As for me, well, I still have more to learn at least we can communicate. He is active in sports and other activities. Sometimes I wonder, why did this happen to us? But since it did happen to us thank God for giving me such a brave and strong little boy that taught me more than I would have ever imagined.
