... here he could snipe at Grant easily. His cleared his mind. This was the hunt. Reaching the ledge he was seeking, Keith lay flat against the ground and waited. Grant was breathing heavily now after so much running at full speed.

He stopped to catch his breath and load a clip into his Uzi. His mind was as sharp as it ever was, though. His survival instincts and adrenaline were kicking in. All he could think about was survival against the predator. The predator being Keith Black.

Keith had Grant in his sights, just waiting calmly for exactly the right moment to fire. His trigger finger was twitching like an impatient child, just wanting to pull the trigger and blow Grant away. But he held his desire in check, still waiting, waiting. Standing there, Grant wondered where Keith was and what he should do next. He looked around. All he saw were ledges all around him.

But something caught his eye. A person! On a ledge no further than 100 yards away! It had to be Keith. He brought his Uzi up high and fired at the figure, knowing that he wouldnt hit it but hoping to distract it. Keith fired right as Grant did, missing barely as Grant dove for cover behind a huge pine tree.

Grant winced as three more rounds hit the snow just to either side of his feet. Keith had six more bullets left in his rifle. Keith saw Grant lean around the tree and fire off another burst, which ricocheted off of the rock wall ten feet below him. Keith fired again, but it was too late. Grant had not been visible long enough to hit. Grant knew that his shots were being ineffective.

He had to aim higher. He leaned out quickly again and fired another short burst, this time aiming very high. He heard the answering gunshot a split second too late. Keith's round hit him in the leg, shattering the leg bone and sending as wave of nausea through Grant in a red puff of blood. But Keith had paid a price for his shot, as well. A round of Grants took him in the left shoulder, immobilizing it.

He could no longer use his rifle since he had only one free arm. Blood gushed freely from his shoulder, covering his arm. He ripped a piece of his undershirt and stuffed it into the hole, clenching his teeth. He would have to rely on his Magnum to get him through this. Grant crumpled to the ground, dazed from the pain and the shock of being shot. He looked around and saw pieces of his bone and flesh all around him.

The snow was blood red everywhere. A growing stain was forming under his leg. He clutched his wound and grimaced as a spurt of blood came out of it. He felt like throwing up. He too ripped off a piece of his shirt and plugged up the hole.

But the weak cloth wouldnt last, Grant knew. He needed medical attention, and soon. He tried to stand up but couldnt keep his balance and fell. He had to do something, and quickly.

Reloading his Uzi, Grant pulled himself up to a sitting position. He had no idea that he had Injured Keith. Keith was already running as fast as he could to Grants location. The mountain was familiar to him. Nobody knew it better. He would be there in about a minute.

Grant, realizing that his situation would be hopeless if he didnt act fast, slowly started dragging himself down the mountain. A trail of blood following his leg, Grant dragged for all his life. Keith soon came to the spot where Grant had been and saw the blood and gore everywhere. Then he saw the trail of blood.

Idiot, he mused. He slowly started making his way behind the trail, trying to see where Grant was. He couldnt be far, Keith knew, for his round had rendered Grants leg useless. Then Keith saw him, desperately pulling himself along. Keith, basking in his former friends obvious pain, decided to further his torment. He brought up his Magnum, took aim, and fired.

Grants foot was nearly blown apart with the force of the slug at such close range. An explosion of hot blood and organic tissue completely covered the immediate area around Grant as the round slammed home. Grant let out a shriek and passed out from the pain and fear in realizing what was fixing to happen to him. When he woke up, Grant found himself bound to a homemade cross, made out of freshly cut pine tree. Keith was standing over him, chuckling.

He couldnt feel any pain in his left leg. Keith must have given him some pretty strong anesthetic! But when he looked down his chest at himself, he almost fainted again. Keith had amputated his leg!

A wave of fear and nausea rolled over him like an ocean wave. He was fixing to die. Keith dragged the cross with Grant on it outside into the cold. There was a small hole in the ground just large enough for the base of the cross to go in. Keith took up a hammer and three nails and stood over Grant.

Do you know what Im going to do, Grant? asked Keith calmly. N-no! was all that Grant could answer. Im going to kill you, Grant, said Keith, smiling evilly, Im gonna kill you because you did me wrong. Grant lay silent, frozen with fear.

Keith took a nail and positioned it over Grants left wrist and lifted the hammer. He was going to be crucified! Crucified on the top of a mountain where nobody would come looking for him! Keith would never be caught! Damn him.

Grants eyes opened wide in pain as the first heavy nail was driven through his wrist. He let out a primal scream that filled the night air. Then another and another as the other nails were driven through his other wrist and then his lone foot. Keith lifted the cross up and fit it into the hole. There, hanging up on a homemade cross out in the cold winter night, was Grant, a former friend and companion. A small feeling of sadness filled his heart for a few seconds, he was going to miss Grant, but the feeling didnt last long.

He watched Grant struggle to get free, but give in to the pain of the cross. Blood rolled slowly out of the punctures in his feet and hands and down the bare wood of the cross. All this had happened because of a debt. A single debt that he hadnt paid off.

This was the price of his failure. Keith knew that the problem could have been solved another way, but this way was so much more fun. The next morning, Grant was dead, frozen from the bitter night on top of the mountain. At the base of the cross was a spot, a spot where Grants blood had soaked the snow. Keith took him down from the cross and buried him deep beneath the snow. It would never melt, so the police would never find the body if they came searching.

Three days later, the police came to investigate the reported disappearance of Grant Starting. They found no body, but arrested Keith for suspicion of murder. The only evidence that the police could find to put Keith away was un-examinable in the courtroom. The only evidence was blood red snow.
