... p a program and then ask a proctor for help when they get twenty errors. Some students didnt know how to read errors that said that variables were not declared just because they typed them wrong or something in that nature. Students wouldnt know that variables would be case sensitive or wouldnt think about clicking on the error to see what exactly was wrong within the program. I think it would be very beneficial if learning how to read errors would be taught in class. I understand that there can be an infinite amount of errors that occur but by teaching the most common ones, it gives a student some knowledge on how to go about solving the problems they have with their programs.

I think a good idea for improving the overall experience for both the students and the proctors themselves would be to have quick review session during proctor class meetings on what is going on in the classroom and what the students are learning. A lot of times proctors forget things about programming if they dont use it on a regular basis. The reviews would just make the proctors more efficient and allow them to better help the students when called upon to do so. I know that for the proctors of MIS 333 K and MIS 325 get review sessions in their classes. The proctors told me that it helped them remember VB and ACCESS and how to help students. I think another good idea that can be implemented to help improve the experience of the proctors is to get hands on experience dealing with making the various homework assignments and the final project.

This allows the proctor to keep the programming language fresh in their minds and might also help them by allowing the proctors an opportunity to think of ways that the skills they learned in MIS 304 can be put into practical use. Having a proctors input on the programs concepts and designs also allows the teacher to make programs that the students currently in MIS 304 might enjoy. Proctors would be able to come up with programs that students might want to do more while still putting in the concepts that need to be taught. Also by giving proctors the chance to give in input, it gives them a better understanding of the programs and allows them to help students better. I think that this course is a great opportunity for MIS majors and MIS minors get gain practical skills of learning how to technical consult. It gives a student hands on experience dealing with problems that commonly arise from people or users of a program.

It also allows one to learn how to communicate information effectively so that a user can understand what errors they are making. Technical consulting gives a person the opportunity to mix teaching and learning together. I am glad I had the opportunity to take this class. I think that this class has benefited me in many ways.

Its a whole new experience from just learning how to code to helping assist others in learning. I used a proctor last semester and it was hard for them to help me out at times. From this semester, I can see why that was the case because it is tough to switch roles from a student to a proctor. At times I wanted to just solve the problems for the students. Often the problems were simple in nature and could be solved within seconds. I learned through this class how to take the time and make it understood to the students why their programs arent working so that they dont repeat their mistakes rather then quickly fixing the problems for them.

Also I noticed that by being a proctor I was allowed to brush up on my Java programming skills. In order to be the most beneficial to the students that come to me with questions, I had to keep up with the assignments given in MIS 304 and look at my old programs and assignments to remind me of the little aspects of Java programming that can be forgotten. For example, one of the students at the beginning of the semester was having problems getting their program to run even though everything seemed ok. When I came to assist him, I found after looking through the program that the student didnt have his code for showing a message dialog box written correctly.

He had simply forgotten to put the four arguments in his parentheses in order to make a message dialog box show. Through this class, I really came to understand the language of Java even more. It is constantly said that you cant fully understand something unless you can properly explain it to someone else. I found this to be so true through being a proctor. When I was a student in MIS 304, there were times when I just copied code that was given to me like the classes that were given for the final project without really understanding it. By being a proctor, I was forced to fully understand the language and what the different classes or methods do in order to tell other students why their program isnt working and how to go about fixing it.

Overall, this class can be a very good learning opportunity for a student. Just like MIS 304, this class is what you make of it. I personally learned a lot about effectively communicating to others, trouble shooting, problem solving, etc. I think the skills learned in this class can help me be better prepared in getting a job. This class is a good starting point for any student looking to see if technical consulting is something that they plan to take on as a career. It is also a good starting point for any career in that it helps a person learning to communicate information effectively and gives them hands on experience in problem solving and dealing with others.

I was glad to have been chosen to be a proctor because the lessons I learned this semester can be applied to my future endeavors.
