... etter for a certain Frodo Baggins, which Butterbur forgot to send to the Shire. Frodo and his company seem to match the description Gandalf gave to Butterbur, so he gives the letter to Frodo. Among other things, this letter contains Gandalf's advice to accept the help of a friend of his, a man called Strider (with the true name Aragorn), should they meet him.

Thus Frodo decides to accept his help as a guide to Rivendell. Merry, who has earlier gone out to get some air, now returns and tells he has seen the Black Riders, and it seems that they have spies in Bree. They decide not to go to the rooms appointed for them, and sleep in the parlor, after they have barred the window and the door. On that very evening, the Black broke into the room where hobbit-guests usually sleep. The hobbits are not discovered, but all the horses and ponies stabled at the inn escape in terror.

The following day they buy a pony and supplies of food. They head towards Rivendell, and Strider leads them through the wilderness to a hill called Weathertop, which offers a view over a large surrounding area. It seems that Gandalf had been there three days before them. That evening they are attacked by five of the Riders in a dell below Weathertop. Frodo is stabbed with an odd knife and faints soon thereafter.

Strider does his best to heal Frodo, but he could only receive proper treatment in Rivendell, which they should reach as soon as possible. On the Road they meet Glorfindel, an Elf-lord who has been sent from Rivendell to find them and help them. Near the Ford of Bruinen they are ambushed by the Black Riders; five pursue them from behind, and four are waiting at the Ford. Frodo manages to escape them and cross the river on Glorfindel's horse.

Then a great flood comes down the river that washes the Riders away. Frodo awakes in Rivendell, where Elrond himself has tended him for three days, and his arm is now almost completely cured. Gandalf is also there and briefly explains Frodo what has happened. The splinter of knife in his arm would have gone to his heart and turned him evil.

Frodo sees many new faces: Elrond, his daughter Arwen, and Glin, one of the twelve dwarves who had accompanied Bilbo on his great journey. He also meets Bilbo, who has lived in Rivendell ever since he had left the Shire. Then while the Elves sing and listen to tales, he and Frodo talk about their adventures for a long time. A council is held in Rivendell to determine what to do in the present situation to prevent Sauron from dominating over the world. On this Council there are Elrond, Gandalf, Frodo, Bilbo, Glin, Glorfindel, Aragorn, many Elves, as well as strangers from abroad, such as Legolas, son of Thranduil the King of the Elves of Mirkwood, and Boromir, son of Denethor the Steward of Gondor. Glin says that messengers from Mordor have come to the Dwarves, seeking information about Bilbo and his Ring.

Then the entire history of the Ring is told, from its forging to the adventures of Bilbo and Frodo. The Council concludes that since the Ring should be destroyed in Orodruin. Frodo says he would accept this task. Scouts are sent out of Rivendell in all directions to search for news of any servants of the Enemy, and return two months later without having discovered any important news. Elrond chooses companions for Frodo.

Afterwards the troop consisted of Sam, Gandalf, Strider, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Merry and Pippin. Bilbo gives his sword and his shirt of dwarf-mail to Frodo. The only remaining way for the Company to reach the other side of the Mountains now leads through the mines of Moria, or Khazad-dum, which was of old a splendid realm of the Dwarves, but is now desolate and known as a dreadful place. They find the Doors of Moria and Gandalf discovers the password that opens them. The Company go inside, and quickly discover that the Doors have been barred from outside. Pt 2 Bilbo has a great number of qualities, generosity, eccentricity, and bravery (indicated in the book The Hobbit) among other ones, is very rich and not very organized.

He collects different things, one mentioned are spoons. Frodo is like Bilbo, generous, brave, and in the beginning, eccentric. They both like to go on adventures; Bilbo couldnt go with Frodo because of his age of one hundred eleven. Samwise is a shy hobbit that, in the beginning, was clipping grass just outside the window when Gandalf and Frodo were talking He is very fond of Frodo and the others and offers to help him in any way he can.

Gandalf is a wizard who is nice toward allies but unmerciful to enemies. He keeps his promises, such as keeping an eye on Frodo, and he does. Wizards are quick to anger, and it is very true when Gandalf and Sam first meet. Peregrin is a hobbit that doesnt exercise much and scares easily. He is used to being pampered, but isnt a total blob. After awhile in the adventure Pippin is eager to do stuff, quote, Then if we are to toil through bog and briar, lets go now!

he was also the youngest of Frodo's group. Strider, or Aragorn, has exceptionally good fighting skills, and likes to smoke pipe-weed, like Gandalf and the rest. He is old friends with Gandalf, and always lends a hand when the occasion arises. Pg 3 I think The Lord of the Rings is so far a good book. I havent read the whole book, but Ive read most of it. It has a lot of things in it, adventure, fantasy, suspense, a hint of mystery.

Id recommend this book to a variety of students. However, it takes willpower to read this book for long periods of time (2 + hours) because the small print and the insanely long book take its tool on even me, a kid who reads about one hundred fifty words per minute. Nonetheless, the book has excellent material and, while it takes awhile to get hooked, is very intriguing. The best part about the book is that it always has something interesting; there are only a few lapses in the story.

Overall, The Lord of the Rings is an advanced book with a plotting that is meant for the advanced reader with a LOT of spare time. Id give it a four out of five stars on my book scale.
