I was drifting off to sleep while listening to the summer nights breeze, rustling the leaves on the oak, outside my window. It was peaceful, dreamy, and most of all, safe. I was almost asleep when a loud buzzing sound filled my ear. A disturbing annoyance cancelled all my thoughts of sleep, and it disturbed all the peace.
Buzzzzzzzz... buzzzzzzzz... buzzzzzzz. Only a mosquito can make that sound. How did it get in here? I thought.
Buzzzzz... buzzzzzzz. I swatted and slapped at that annoying creature. Ill get it, I know I will I thought, Ill knock it down in midair and put it out of its misery. That itsy-bitsy pest couldnt survive my powerful swipes. Therefore, I swung to the left, to the right, above my head, over my stomach, everywhere.
I didnt miss an inch of the darkness. Nothing could have survived that extreme attack of mine! I probably looked like a crazed lunatic, but it was all for a cause. There, I thought, Im certain now, it has to be dead. It had to be dead, with my arms flying everywhere swatting and swiping.
It was probably knocked dead, somewhere on the floor Ill just clean it up in the morning. Slowly my panting was returning to normal. Tranquility was returning. Then I realized that my body was tensing. It was become so tense my muscles started to weaken.
I was tense because I was listening. Listening so hard that my ears felt like they were twitching. Silence, blessed silence. No nasty creature was there to bother me anymore.
The breeze rustled the leaves and I started to dream. I was on some beach, serene waters, and giant white clouds, like full-blooming magnolias, with warm sand. Suddenly, I snapped awake. buzzzzzzz... buzz zzzz...
buzz zzzz. No! No! No!
I sat rite up. Okay this time I will get it, I thought. I swung my feet onto the floor, and turned on the light. I picked up a T-shirt, and listened.
Nothing. I peered everywhere like an eagle. Eagle Eye they should call meI dont miss a thing! But, I looked carefully into the light, and nothing. Do lights attract mosquitoes?
I thought with a devilish smile, Haha! Bait! I scanned the walls, the ceiling. I gripped my T-shirt, ready for a possible assault. Silence. Nothing.
I watched the light, and stood still, listening and ready. Still, nothing, and more silence. I waited, stiff as a board, yet nothing. I decided to crawl back into bed, leaving the light on. I gripped the T-shirt. If that tiny pest was still in the vicinity, the light will attract it, and then that is when I shall swat it!
And finally I would be able to have a peaceful nights rest. I waited, listened. A car went by, the breeze rustled the leaves. How can I hear the buzz with all this racket? ! I thought. I got out of bed, closed the window, and back into bed.
Yes, now I can hear better, I am ready. The breeze wouldnt be able to disturb me now. I listened, and waited. First, I laid on my back. I was able to scan the space in my room now. Eagle Eye, thats me.
I tuned up both ears to 100 % capacity. This is good. I was born ready for this adventurous game, I thought jokingly. I felt my back growing stiff. Suddenly, I wasnt comfortable on my back anymore. I needed to turn.
So, I turned toward the light. The light should attract the pestering nuisance. All I really needed to do was to watch the space around the lamp. I wadded up the t-shirt. In my opinion, I thought it was a good strategy.
I was ready and waiting. One swipe and this war will be all over. That mosquito will never bother anyone ever again. Then I saw it! It was clinging to the wall like super glue, waiting for me to just smack it. On the count of three, Im going to kill it.
One two THREE! SWAT! SWAP! SMACK! SWIPE! Ah, at last!
Finally, I had put that little bug out of its misery and out of mine. And I guess Ill just clean it up (along with the broken lamp) in the morning.
