In life, we always have dreams that we desire and wish to become reality and we have goals that we plan on accomplishing. However, most of the time succeeding is harder said than done. Holden and Homer represent the people who seem to be categorized under those who have the trouble succeeding. Although they are two different people who live in two different types of society, they both share the same goal. Living in two different types of societies and being so different from each other many would find it hard to believe that Holden an odd young man that doubts himself of a bright future who lives in a modern society, and Homer a young man who seems to have a bright future who lives in a rural town, both set out to conquer the same goal. This goal is to break free from where they are and explore the world seeing what it has to offer and how they can be a part of it while at the same time be successful.

Although very different from each other, to achieve their goal they end up doing similar things. Holden only has a few days left at his school because he was expelled due to his grades so he decides to leave early, due to some other problems as well and heads to New York where he is in search of what the world has to offer. Homer on the other hand is a Doctor at the orphanage he was raised up as. Him being an orphan decides to leave by hitching a ride when he got the opportunity, to fill his curiosity of what the outside world is like since he knows nothing of it, also in search of what the outside world has to offer him. Another minor similarity is Holden leaves school to stay in The Big Apple and Homer leaves to stay in The Cider House. Another similarity Holden and Homer have in common is their beliefs.

Whatever they believe in, they seem to feel strongly about, and tends to always have arguments to back it up. As a doctor Homer strongly disagrees against abortions especially since he was an orphan and him knowing that if they had abortions around when his mother was pregnant with him he probably wouldnt of been born. Although he performs the procedure after he leaves the orphanage for a friend he wishes he could do all possible to prevent abortions making sure all children are born. Where as Holden wants to be the Catcher In The Rye and to be there for all children preventing them from growing up wrongly as if he were to be the glove at the peek of the cliff when a kid is about to fall. With them both having such strong beliefs about their linked issues, its easy to see how them having the same goal in mind connects their beliefs. Although Homer and Holden share the same goal, they have two absolutely different personalities, which causes them to go down two different paths to reach their common goal.

Homers the kind of kid everybody likes hes honest, innocent, and seems to care about the people he knows. Holden is the kind of kid everybody seems to dislike because of his attitude, he separates himself from others and tends to be ignorant most of the time. At the orphanage, Homer is adored and admired by the legions of little kids who know deep down they " ll never be adopted; he answers their funny little questions with unabashed straightforwardness, and the sly smile that plays around his lips betrays how much he enjoys them. At the school Holden acts as if he is greater than others and tends not to get to close to other students and dislikes the boys that is around the girl he cares for. Homer is so considerate towards other people that he went against his own belief of abortions and did the procedure to help out a friend in need, knowing that it went against what he stood for.

Holden can be considerate at times, but still ends up doing the wrong things. Homer is anxious to be a part of the world as he finds out what it has to offer unlike Holden, which is scared of the outside world but still searches for answers and tries to be a part of it. Although making our dreams come true, and accomplishing the goals we set out to conquer is not an easy task, Holden and Homer which are two different people have done wrong things but for a good reason to achieve their goals, both departing from where they were to satisfy their curiousity of the outside world to see what its like, what it has to offer, and how they can be a part of it. Both going down separate paths throughout their lives and facing different trials and tribulations also makes them similar, because it seems nothing could hold them back as they continued to strive and reach their goal.

Despite the fact of The Cider House Rules and The Catcher In The Rye are two different stories, their main characters Homer and Holden had the same common goal in mind, and with them accomplishing their goal it lets me know that anything you set out to conquer no matter what type of situations you are facing can be defeated. With this being said, I believe anything is possible.
