... up and they left Jackson after a few hours. Before they left Jackson Stacey's cousin Oliver had an Aunt and Uncle that ran a restaurant in Jackson. They stayed there till Jeremy showed up with Moe. Cassie went to study for a debate in the back of the restaurant and met the man by the name of Solomon Bradley. She liked him from the stat but he was way to old for her.

Then Oliver got some food and money from his Uncle and Cassie, Stacey, and Little Willie were of to Memphis, TN to get Moe on a train. They had to go all the way to Memphis because Jackson was already crawling with cops looking for Moe and they were looking everywhere. On the way to Memphis Stacey knew that the car was running right and stopped at a gas station to check it out and the gas station attendant said that they needed a new fan belt. That meant they had to stick around for a while. There was no colored bathroom for Cassie to go in so she was thinking about the whites bathroom and a white woman who was going to use it caught her and called the gas station attendant. They made her scared and when she tried to run away she tripped and lost her purse, than the white men from the other cars came over and started to kick Cassie as she was laying on the ground.

Clarence was sleeping in the car because he has had horrible headaches and he was taking too many B. C. s and they made him tired. He did not see all of the men around the car and what they did to it. Stacey got back from the store he saw Cassie and the men around the car and they all got in and Stacey scared the men by almost running over them. They jumped back away from the car and Stacey drove away, but a minute later the men were fallowing them and Stacey wanted to lose them.

So they drove into a side road, turned off their headlights and hid in the trees. They slept most of the night but the next morning the car would not start so Stacy and Little Willie went to look for a fan belt because they never got another one at the gas station. Moe, Cassie, and Clarence stayed at the car, and a few minutes later two men came out of the woods and asked what they were doing. They said that they just wanted to rest and they were tired fro all of the driving. Then they explained that they could not leave because they needed a new fan belt and Cassie's her brother had already went to look for another one. The men said that they would not find anything open because it was a Sunday.

Moe went with them because they offered them a new fan belt from some of their old parts that they had laying around the house. Clarence was still asleep in the back off the car, and when Stacey returned, Clarence just started screaming and ran out of the car and headed for the woods. He fell down a steep rocky hill and knocked himself out. They got him in the car and drove till they found a hospital but it was a hospital for whites only, so they did not let them ring Moe in there. An African American woman that worked told them to go around to the back and there she have him some more B.

C. s and told them where to find an African American doctor. The name of the doctor was Ma Cassie, and she let Clarence stay there overnight to see if those headaches go away. She also gave him something a little stronger than B.

C. s and it knocked him out completely. So he stayed and the rest went on to take Moe to Memphis. They got to the train station but they could not get a ticket out to Chicago to their Uncle Hammer because the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. They went to Solomon Bradley's office and there he got them a ticket and let Cassie wash up as the boys took the car to a garage to fix all of the damage on it. The next day they left Memphis after Moe had gotten on the train and headed back for Clarence.

When they got to Ma Dresses place they had found that Clarence was dead. They drove back to Jackson and called the army and told them, and they said they would bring his body home to be buried. Stacy and the rest drove down from Jackson to tell Clarence's family and Sissy that he was dead. On the way in they saw a bunch of trucks around the Wallace Store, and Harris was in the back of the truck all tied up. Jeremy was there, Statlers dad, sheriff, everyone was there because they were going to put Harris in jail because he would not tell them where Moe was. Sissy was there trying to explain that it was Jeremy who done it but there was no proof.

Then out of everybody's surprise, Jeremy confessed and said that Moe must have snuck on the truck when he wasnt looking, and got out in Bogganville. Then after they let Jeremy and Harris go, because it was neither of their faults, they all went home. Stacey and Cassie told the whole story to their Pa, and then they went to say what had happened to Clarence to Ma Basic and Miz Noble. Then Cassie told Sissy, but she did not want to believe and thought it was a joke and eventually it sank in and she screamed at the top off her lungs and wept for Clarence.

The funeral was a really hard time for everybody, and then after the funeral Jeremy came over to talk to Stacey at night. He tried to explain to him that he did not mean for what had happened to Harris back in the woods. He also said that he was going to join the army after he gets up to Jackson. Stacey was still mad at Jeremy for what he did and never forgave him. They also never saw Jeremy after that again and Stacey returned to Jackson, but Cassie waited like a week before going back. I think that this book was very interesting to read and it was a little sad at some parts.

I think that they author wrote this book because she wanted to show discrimination against African Americans, and to show the hardships that they faced in everyday life. To me it looked like life for those people was not very pleasant at most times but then sometimes it was just the best times anyone could have. I think that the book changed me because I learned that even thought African Americans have it a lot easier now, it was not always like that.
