Picture this you are flipping through the radio and finally stop the mindless button pushing and stop to hum to that loveable tune you have grown to love. Girls just wanna have fun... yeah yeah, but have you ever once stopped to think about it? It seems to me that it must be changed to something more general. When it all comes down to it, we all just wanna have fun. Golding demonstrates this in Lord of the Flies when young boys are stranded on an island by themselves and all Hell breaks loose.

Time and time again I have looked around me and seen humans wrecking something that once was gorgeous. My point being that we take something that was once a beautiful paradise and transform it into an ugly battlefield of shenanigans. An ugly battlefield of shenanigans you are thinking? Let me prove my point. We have grown up day-to-day in a government that most of us see as ideal. I would certainly think that these ideas would not stick to these young childrens brains, but that is not the case.

In fact, these rules of society actually stuck to their backs like a back against a leather seat on a muggy summer day. The children end up running amuck on the island getting caught up in the mumbo jumbo of having no rules. However, throughout all the fun they are having they still feel some sort of guilt on their shoulders when they do something bad. For example, when Maurice smashes Percival's sandcastle, sand gets in Percival's eyes. Maurice feels miserable even when there is not anyone there to give him a stern lecture on how, You could poke his eye out, kid. This is all apparent on page 65.

It states, Percival began to whimper with an eyeful of sand and Maurice hurried away. In his other life, Maurice had received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand. Now, though there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand, Maurice still felt unease of wrong doing. Now that is a powerful government, dont you think? Even after a few weeks of being away from home, the children still keep the laws of their old home close by.

I know that if I had been without reading of Lord of the Flies I would most definitely be stuck in wonder how these young souls managed with all of this lack of law and feeling of guilt. The answer? They didnt. After the kids realized that they were, indeed, stranded on the island without any adult they first went haywire while in search for their parents then they gathered around a camp fire and calmed down a tiny bit. The kids look up to Ralph because he has an older, wiser look about him, but most importantly, he has in his hands, the conch.

Overall, children and even adults turn to authority when in doubt. Refer to page 24 and Im sure you will be pleasantly surprised when it says, There was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: There was his size, and attractive appearance, and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch the being that had sat waiting for them. When I think about it now Ralph actually blows the whistle sounding like a school bell a signal to heard back into class and get in order. I know I am wondering how much it is going to get these little tykes back in line, so hop to it.

As you know, no one is there to take full responsibility to get these children back in line. Take a small poke at what you think might happen. Well if you guessed these kids would run amuck, then you guessed right. Or perhaps youre cheating and you already read the book and only reading my essay to give me a grade.

Wink wink Anyhow, getting back on topic, after a while the kids go to their savage instincts as humans. They are painted with war paint and start killing things to survive. The quote I am about to recite to you should really make you understand how one single naval officer can get a bunch of kids in line. On page 221 it says, A semi circle of little boys, their bodies streaked with colored clay, sharp sticks in their hands, were standing on the beach making no noise at all. Think about that for a moment. Now they are in a semi-circle instead of a pack of savages, they are made-up with coloured clay rather than war paint, and they are carrying sharp sticks instead of spears.

My, my, my, all of that was probably a lot to take in, but I hope you got the gist of things. Wrapping things up make take a couple sentences or so, so bear with me. Given all the examples I have given above I really think Golding did a just marvelous job putting in his input on how humans react to situations. Overall, humans will resort to savagery and war if they are given the chance because that is all we see on television. The media is throwing out these ideas that it is okay for people to kill other people.

Even on cartoons put on television for little tykes people solve problems by whipping out their kung-fu moves and blasting away peoples homes. Even more, in our government, we base our lives on The Bible whether it be true or not. I distinctly remember from Sunday school learning that, Thou shall not kill. Still we walk into the courtroom knowing that someone could get the death penalty that very day. The media has sucked us into a huge black hole. I just want you to ponder on the idea for a second how you would react in a situation on a stranded island without any cell phones, real laws, or world wide web.

Would you be stuck with nothing and resort to savage ways?
