In the play Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand, the conflict is Man vs. himself, Cyrano vs. his internal conflicts. Cyrano de Bergerac, a poet, a swordsman, a philosopher, a musician, and a member of the Cadets of Gascoyne, is deeply in love with his beautiful cousin, Roxane. Despite all of Cyrano's skills and brilliance, he has an unusually large nose that he finds too grotesque to risk confronting Roxane with his feelings. Cyrano later discovers that Roxane is in love with Christian, a young handsome nobleman who lacks intelligence and poetic skills.
Cyrano decides to help Christian write letters in the form of poetry to win Roxane's love, which also allows himself an opportunity to secretly express his love for Roxane in hopes that Roxane would fall in love with his soul, but Christian was later fatally shot in a war against Spain and this ended his letter writings. Before Christian died, he realized that Cyrano was in love with Roxane and wanted him to confess to Roxane about the letters, which would force her to choose her love, but since Christian died, Cyrano lost the chance to do so. Fifteen years later, Cyrano's enemies ambushed him during a visit to see Roxane, which caused Cyrano a desire to recite his last letter he wrote as Christian to Roxane. He reads it aloud by heart and Roxane learns that Cyrano was the one who wrote the letters and that it is him that she is in love with, but later Cyrano died due to the fatal blow from his enemies. Cyrano died with the knowledge of Roxane loving him, so this solved his internal conflict. In the beginning of this play, Cyrano, a man with many skills and wonders, falls in love with his cousin, Roxane. Cyrano has an unusually large and grotesque nose, which prevents him from revealing his love for Roxane. Later, Cyrano decided to reveal his feelings for Roxane when he thought that Roxane had feelings for him too, but he found out that she had feelings for Christian, a handsome young nobleman. Roxane's love for Christian was based on his great appearance, the one thing that Cyrano did not possess.
This type of love was not fair for Cyrano because Roxane made her decision based on only appearance, which did not give Cyrano a chance to express himself. When Cyrano heard that a hundred men were going to kill Ligniere, he decided to defend him knowing that he would be outnumbered. Also, the Cadets of Gascoyne were sent to the front lines of the war with Spain. There, they were starving and weak. They were pretty much sent there to die because they did not seem to have a chance to win.
The people in these wars either had an advantage over the other or did not. There is no fairness in these wars. A hundred men outnumbered Cyrano, but he defeated all one hundred because of all his talent and skills. The hundred men lacked the skills they needed, which made it unfair for them. In the war against Spain, the Cadets of Gascoyne lacked food and resources because they were out of their own territory. This made it unfair for them.
At the end of the play, when Cyrano went to visit Roxane, his enemies ambushed him. They wanted to kill him, so they threw a large log and cracked his skull. He is still alive, but barely. He used the last of his energy to recite to Roxane the last letter that he wrote as Christian for her. Cyrano recited it perfectly by heart and this caused Roxane to realize that it was he who wrote all the letters and not Christian. This also made her realize that it is really Cyrano that she is in love with.
When Cyrano finally had Roxane find her true love, which is Cyrano, he dies. This is unfair because when Cyrano finally gets the love he always wanted, he dies and loses it. The books main theme relates to real life today because nothing is really fair when it comes to love and war. You cannot always get what you want or be equally treated. In love, your boyfriend or girlfriend may break-up with you for no reason at all or for an absurd reason, which may be totally unfair. In war, someone will probably be more skilled and more intelligent and have a great advantage over you, so this is not fair.
Most people in real life today think it is only fair if it goes the way they want it, but fail to see that it is not fair for the other side if it does go the way you want it. Not everything is always fair in love and war in real life, just like not everything being fair in love and war in the book Cyrano de Bergerac.
