Macbeth is a story of the very nature of good and evil and how ambition can sway the alignment of Worthy Macbeth. We are first shocked when we see that Macbeth gives serious thought to the witches supernatural soliciting asking himself why has it given me the earnest of success? In passage 1 we see perhaps the greatest contrast as worthy, loyal and freshly valued Macbeth is completely absorbed in the witches prophecy and ambitiously considering killing the model of innocence and goodness, Duncan. This immediate earnest of success commencing in a truth causes Macbeth to consider the extent of his ambition. He focuss on the truths commenced and weighs these against the Horrid image doth unfix my hair And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature. Such a contrast builds an intrigue into whether or not Macbeth will yield to that suggestion.

It is of immense importance to realize how quickly Macbeth begins to even contemplate killing Duncan, whose murder is yet but fantastical, and dwell seriously on such an issue that should be immediately dismissed by such a loyal, honorable and worthy Macbeth. Macbeth's response to these seemingly uncontrollable, ambitiously driven horrible imaginings is; If chance will have me King, why, chance may crown me, without my stir. In this he tries to negate his ambition, leaving such thoughts alone however this, without my stir, is soon dismissed by the lovely Lady Macbeth who pressures Macbeth with attacks on his manhood and reminders of their feelings for each other to take part and responsibility in killing Duncan. It is important to also take into consideration the tone and mood of this passage.

In its entirety Macbeth is trance and seemingly unaware of his comrades waiting. It is Banquo that responds to this situation by passing over a comment to the rest of the group to lose the focus on Macbeth in what is to us a very ironic comment; Look, how our partners rapt. From this we feel that Banquo is aware of the thoughts that run through Macbeth's mind and his control of the situation implies that he is somewhat skeptical of the supernatural soliciting which Macbeth is absorbed by. Hence there is an uneasy, distant sort of feel in the war camp. During the 3 rd passage we are alerted to the understanding that Macbeth has huge regrets and fears about killing Duncan. He becomes emotionally and mentally unstable overpowered with a sense of disbelief of what he has just done.

We sense Macbeth's horror of what he has just done by his delusions Methought I heard a voice cry sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep. He fears the consequences of which the murder of sleep brings and we get a strong image of how important sleep played a part when he mentions sore labours bath, balm of hurt minds, great natures second course, chief nourished in lifes feast. In addition, the religious connotations such as amen and god bless us which Macbeth could not say at a time of need suggest a far more evil force at play than wed earlier suspected. I had most need of blessing, and Amen stuck in my throat. We are now inclined to believe that Macbeth has reached the point of no return, as is he; Macbeth shall sleep no more!

Such a passage presents the case of the supernatural powers as being more powerful than wed presumed. To look at the tone of each character in depth we are struck with a contrast of self absorbed delusion and logical clear thinking. If it werent for Lady Macbeth, the story may have ended short with Macbeth going in the same fashion of the guards. Although this clear thinking plagued Lady Macbeth later in the story it was vital to the plot as her intentions to become queen were at their highest stage.

Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead are but as pictures; tis the eye of childhood that fears a painted devil. Macbeth is regretful and fearful of what he has done, I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on it again I dare not.

It isnt until the day after that Macbeth realizes that there is no return on the deed he has committed. I would argue that it was this night when Macbeth realized he wasnt so much in control as the supernatural, which led him to the crime as the attitude changes from fear to control again very quickly. By reading these passages we are led to the question of whether or not Macbeth is controlled emotionally and physically by his ambitions which in turn are pricked by a supernatural and evil intent. The question of the nature of good and evil arises on a whole again and we are forced to turn back to our own views and values for the answers.

What the story of Macbeth presents is a deep and complicated madness that can not easily be understood. With much contrast of characters we continue to arrange our own judgments and compare their dispositions to that of Macbeth. Thus giving us a sum to place the nature of evil and the raw power of ambition into, to ultimately decide, what made Macbeth the man that he was? The supernatural, Lady Macbeth, Predispositions, all of the above or just a string of ill-timed coincidence.
