Many movies have been adapted from books. Several of these movies do not follow the books precisely. Although the movie Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann has the same basic elements as Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, there are several differences that exist amongst them. The setting of both the movie and the book vary.

The book takes place in Verona 16 th Century times, while the movie takes place Verona Beach, 20 th Century times. The setting of Shakespeare was more of the Victorian era while Fuhrman set his movie in modern times. (Nelson) Despite their obvious differences in setting, both share the Shakespearean dialogue such as, O Romeo, Romeo? Wherefore art thou Romeo? and, You kiss by th book. (Movie).

The characters of Romeo and Juliet were the same in both the movie and the book. Romeo, the son of Montague, is one of the two main characters. He falls desperately in love with Juliet. They have a secret love because only the nurse and Friar know. However, due to the fact that he thinks Juliets dead, he ends up committing suicide at the end of both the movie and the book.

Juliet, the daughter of Capulet, is the other main character. She loved Romeo as much as Romeo loved her. She had to get secretly married because her father wouldnt grant her permission. At the end of both the movie and the book she ends up taking her life because she sees Romeo is dead. (On-line) Paris, a young count, kinsman to the prince, is one of several minor characters. He is the one to whom Juliet is to be married. Paris is in love with Juliet, but Juliet does not reciprocate his feelings.

In the beginning, Paris is unaware of Juliets feelings for Romeo. Even in the very end Paris thinks Romeo is at the graveside to destroy the tomb. Tybalt, a nephew to Lady Capulet, is another minor character. He is Juliets cousin and is not of Juliets relationship with Romeo. He has greater loyalty to Juliets father then Juliet herself.

He ends up killing Mercutio in both the book and the movie. Mercutio, a friend of Romeo and kinsman to the prince, suspected the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. He lost his life to Tybalt while in battle, in the movie and book. Montague, father to Romeo and head of one of the feuding houses, is a bitter enemy of the Capulets.

He is the head of his house and also a very powerful man. He is not aware of the marriage between Romeo and Juliet. At the end of the play he says to his enemy Capulet, I can give thee more. For I will raise her statue in pure gold. (5. 5. 300) Friar Lawrence, a brother to the Francium order, was a major role player in both the movie and the book. He was the one who secretly married Romeo and Juliet.

The plan that he had initiated in order for both of them to run off together backfired. As a result of it, Romeo and Juliet both ended up taking their lives. Capulet, head of the other feuding house and father to Juliet, was also not aware of the marriage between Romeo and Juliet. He was also powerful like Montague and the head of his household. (Nelson) At the end of the play he says to Montague, Shake hands. This is my daughters wedding gift from you: I can ask no more. (5. 5. 295) Two households both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to mutiny where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal lions of these two foes, a pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives. Whose misadventure piteous overthrows, doth with their death bury their parents strife. The fearful passage of their death marked love, and the continuance of their parents rage, which but their childrens end, naught could remove, is now the two-hour traffic of our stage. The which if you with patient years attend, what here shall miss, our toll shall strive to mend. (movie) Director Baz Luhrmann opted for a different approach in introducing the plot to the viewer. In place of prologue, the movie opens up with a headline news report. The plot slightly differs in both the movie and the book.

The books climax of Mercutio's death is tremendously different from that of the movie. In the book Romeo kills Tybalt after Tybalt kills Mercutio. In the movie, however, there is a car chase scene where Romeo shoots Tybalt. (movie) The forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet is an element of the plot that can be found in both cases, and is virtually unchanged. Other minor differences exist amongst the book and the movie. The nurse, in the movie, comes alone to speak to Romeo about Juliet, but in the book she is accompanied by Peter. Another distinction is when Romeo says; Thy drugs are quick. (On-line) In the book he is referring to a lethal drug taken in the tomb, but in the movie he is talking about the ecstasy tablet Mercutio gave him before Capulets party.

Another variance is the exiling of Romeo. In the book, Prince Escalus exiles Romeo from Verona, while in the movie rather then a prince it is a police officer. A final difference is how Romeo obtains the poison. The apothecary Romeo gets the poison from is in Verona Beach, however in the book he first buys the poison in Mantua and then decides to return to Verona with it. (movie) There are several variations between the conclusion of the book and the movie. In the book, Juliet talks about the fears of taking the poison, while in the movie, no such dialogue is presented. Among the changes that were made to accommodate a new time frame, the method of Juliets demise was changed from a knife-inflicted wound to a gunshot.

At last, one final distinction is the findings of Romeo and Juliets bodies. Shakespeare has the church watchman find their bodies while the movie has police discover them. (Nelson) A glooming peace this morning brings, the sun for sorrow will not show his head; Once to have more talk of these things; for never was a story of woe, this of Juliet and her Romeo. (5. 5. 310) In the book the prince states this to the town and especially to Montague and Capulet, however in the movie, the news reporter states it at the end of the news broadcast. Overall the book Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and the movie adaptation by Baz Luhrmann are similar in ways such as characters, dialogue, and plot. Despite this, they are extremely distinct in other ways such as setting, climax, and conclusion.

The movie does an adequate job of providing a fresh perspective on the original play.
