In the play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, it preformed the essential need of Hamlet, the protagonist and his ambiguity about the murder of his uncle Claudius, the new King. The essential revenge was something that was absolutely necessary that Hamlet should have done. Claudius, King Hamlets brother, murdered King Hamlet, Hamlets father. Hamlets ambiguity came in when he was not sure if he should kill Claudius or not, because he was scared of getting caught and being punished. Essential ambiguity preformed nicely in the play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, it showed the way of how Hamlet acted when problems came about, his maturity of dealing with his own problems, and thing that was needed to be done but he gave up because he was not sure.

Hamlets uncertainty towards his problem was a disgrace to his father King Hamlet. In the play many examples have been set based on essential ambiguity, the thought of a character, an action of a character, and a phase that was said by a character. For the nature of Polonius, he was a greedy, selfish, and a mouthy man. He did not care much about his daughter nor anything else expect for himself. The only reason for his living was to try to please the king and queen.

If he does what he was told then he will retreat rewards from them both. Right after when he found out the problem in between Hamlet and Ophelia his daughter, he rapidly wanted to report the incident to the king and queen because they where looking for the cause of Hamlets madness at the time being. Hamlet and Ophelia were in love, but Polonius stopped them from seeing each other because he thought Hamlet would not want Ophelia as his wife. Come, go with me. I will go seek the king.

This is the very ecstasy of love, Whose violent property for does itself, And leads the will to desperate undertakings... (Hamlet Act II Scene i, line 101) Without ignorant characters such as Polonius in the play, the king and queen would not have been on watch of Hamlets every step. For Polonius, to please the king and queen was the essential ambiguity of his life. Knowing that King Hamlet was murdered by Claudius but not bitten by a snake, told by the ghost of King Hamlet, Hamlet was furious with his revenge. Two months passed by quickly and Hamlet was still deciding if the word of the ghost was right. He wanted to make sure before he commits his revenge.

Finally Hamlet planned a play for Claudius and Gertrude, the Queen also Hamlets mother to watch. The Murder of Gonzago it was called, and it was the replay of King Hamlets death. The plan was if Claudius reacts to the play while the murdering was being done, then Hamlet would be sure that Claudius is the murderer of the crime. For murder, though it have no tongue, will speak With most miraculous organ. Ill have these players Play something like the murder of my father Before mine uncle. Ill observe his looks...

Out of my weakness and my melancholy, As he is very potent with such spirits, Abuses me to damn me. Ill have grounds More relative than this. The plays the thing Wherein Ill catch the conscience of the king. (Hamlet Act II Scene ii, line 560) But just after Hamlet talked about his plan for the fearful revenge, his melancholy made him think of the horrible consequences that might happen to him. Hamlet is a coward. He still was not sure about his revenge. He was too scared of being caught, because he might have to die.

When the ghost of King Hamlet first appeared it scared the guards that was on duty that night, they where speechless and did not know what to do. Then on the third night the guards invited Horatio, Hamlets only friend to observe it also because he was a scholar. Terrifying! Then Horatio and Marcellus, a guard quickly decided that they should tell Hamlet about having seen the ghost of his father. Within that moment Marcellus said a significant phase.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. (Hamlet Act I Scene iv, line 90) Marcellus does not know what to do, but he knew there was something wrong going in the state of Denmark. The phase represented the meaning of the whole play. This phase opened up the first step to the play. The word rotten meant something that was not right. Something that was wrong in the state of Denmark. The return of King Hamlets ghost was haunted, and Hamlet was the only one whom the ghost wished to speak to.

That also signified that Hamlet was the only one who can save the state of Denmark. Based on that fact that essential ambiguity is an absolute duty that a person is not sure of doing, the play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark showed perfect sense of explaining such. The way how Polonius acted because all he wanted was money and left out the Ophelias feelings, and the play which Hamlet set up to be a mouse trap for Claudius but he ended up not killing Claudius because he was scared of consequence, and lastly the statement which Marcellus made because he did not know what to do but he feels that there was trouble. It was true that according to A. C. Bradley, an expert on Shakespeare, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was a play of essential ambiguity.
